Preposition for alignment (uz)

The Preposition "uz" for Physical Alignment

The preposition uz expresses physical alignment, meaning "along," "next to," or "by." The noun following uz must take the accusative case.

Recall the accusative endings for singular nouns:

  • Feminine nouns typically change from -a to -u (rijeka becomes rijeku).
  • Masculine inanimate nouns (prozor, nasip) and neuter nouns keep their dictionary form.
We are walking along the river.
Hodamo uz rijeku.
The captain is standing next to the window.
Kapetan stoji uz prozor.
I run along the embankment every morning.
Trčim uz nasip svako jutro.

When a noun has an attached adjective, the adjective must also take the corresponding accusative ending.

The ship is passing by the old fortress.
Brod prolazi uz staru tvrđavu.

"uz" for Addition
