From "this" to "these"
You already know ovaj, ova and ovo for pointing at one thing. Croatian has a matching set for pointing at more than one, and it selects on the same gender the plural noun endings do.
| gender | one thing | more than one |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | ovaj hotel | ovi hoteli |
| feminine | ova knjiga | ove knjige |
| neuter | ovo pismo | ova pisma |
The neuter is the one to watch: ova is the feminine SINGULAR and the neuter PLURAL, and only the noun beside it tells you which.
| These hotels are new. | Ovi hoteli su novi. |
Masculine: ovi
Masculine plurals end in -i, and so does their demonstrative.
| These people are old. | Ovi ljudi su stari. |
Feminine: ove
Feminine plurals end in -e, and so does theirs.
| These books are interesting. | Ove knjige su zanimljive. |
Neuter: ova
Neuter plurals end in -a, and so does theirs.
| These letters are new. | Ova pisma su nova. |
Two useful neighbours
isti means the same and drugi means other, different — both behave like ordinary adjectives and agree the same way.
| These students are the same. | Ovi studenti su isti. |
