Past tense with plural subjects (-li, -le, -la)

Plural Auxiliary Verbs

To talk about events in the past involving "we", "you (plural)", or "they", you will use the plural forms of the auxiliary verb biti (to be):

  • smo (we)
  • ste (you, plural or formal)
  • su (they)

Plural Participle Endings

Just like in the singular, the main verb (the l-participle) must match the gender of the subject. In the plural, the endings change:

  • -li for masculine subjects, or mixed groups containing at least one male.
  • -le for groups of entirely feminine subjects.
  • -la for neuter subjects (this importantly includes words like djeca, meaning "children").

Here is how you use the -li ending for masculine and mixed groups:

We celebrated a birthday and ate cake.
Slavili smo rođendan i jeli tortu.
The players played a good match.
Igrači su igrali dobru utakmicu.

When speaking directly to a group, use ste and the appropriate ending:

You listened to good music.
Slušali ste dobru glazbu.

When a group is exclusively feminine, the verb takes the -le ending:

The friends laughed and celebrated.
Prijateljice su se smijale i slavile.

When talking about neuter plural subjects, the verb takes the -la ending:

The children laughed at the match.
Djeca su se smijala na utakmici.

Asking Plural Questions

Just like with singular subjects, you can ask a yes/no question by starting with the full form of the auxiliary verb (jesmo, jeste, jesu) followed by the question word li:

Did you sing a song at the birthday?
Jeste li pjevali pjesmu na rođendanu?
