Numbers 11 to 20
In Croatian, numbers from eleven to nineteen are formed by adding the suffix -naest to the base number. The number twenty is dvadeset.
| eleven | jedanaest |
| twenty | dvadeset |
Counting with Numbers 5 and Above
Numbers from five and above require the counted noun to take the genitive plural.
| We have eleven questions and twelve problems. | Imamo jedanaest pitanja i dvanaest problema. |
| I see thirteen people and fourteen cars. | Vidim trinaest ljudi i četrnaest automobila. |
| I need fifteen rooms and sixteen keys. | Trebam petnaest soba i šesnaest ključeva. |
This rule also applies when stating age. In Croatian, you say someone "has" a certain number of years. For ages five and up, the word for year (godina) is in the genitive plural (godina).
| She is fourteen years old. | Ona ima četrnaest godina. |
When a number from five and above acts as the subject of a sentence, the verb takes the third-person singular form.
| Eleven students are learning Croatian. | Jedanaest studenata uči hrvatski. |
| Eighteen guests are waiting. | Osamnaest gostiju čeka. |
