Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner describe how an action is performed. In Croatian, turning an adjective into an adverb is very simple: you just use the adjective's neuter singular form.
For most adjectives, this means adding the ending -o to the base word.
| diligent | marljiv |
| He works diligently in the office. | On marljivo radi u uredu. |
Because adverbs describe verbs rather than nouns, they never change form. They stay exactly the same regardless of who is performing the action.
| The new workers work diligently. | Novi radnici marljivo rade. |
Here are a few more examples of everyday adverbs formed with -o:
| You must read the document carefully. | Morate pažljivo čitati dokument. |
| You speak English perfectly! | Savršeno govoriš engleski! |
| He intentionally helps her. | Namjerno joj pomaže. |
Adverbs Ending in -e
Just like with neuter adjectives, if the base word ends in a "soft" consonant (such as č, ć, š, ž, j, lj, nj), the adverb will end in -e instead of -o.
For example, the adjective loš (bad) ends in the soft consonant š, so it becomes the adverb loše (badly).
| You sing badly, but you play the piano perfectly. | Loše pjevaš, ali savršeno sviraš klavir. |
