Questions & Answers about الرصاص أثقل من الفولاذ.
Why do "lead" and "steel" have the definite article "ال" in Arabic when they don't have "the" in English?
In Arabic, when you talk about general categories, concepts, or materials in a broad sense, you must use the definite article. So, materials like الرصاص (lead) and الفولاذ (steel) take ال here because the sentence is making a general statement about them.
How is the word أثقل (heavier) formed?
It is formed using the standard Arabic comparative pattern أفعل (af'al). You take the three root letters from the base adjective ثقيل (heavy) and fit them into this pattern to get أثقل (heavier).
Why is the preposition من (from) used here instead of a word for "than"?
Arabic doesn't have a separate word for "than". When you use an أفعل comparative adjective like أثقل followed by من, the preposition من functions as "than" to compare two things. Literally, it reads as "heavier from steel."
I've seen the word الرصاص used to mean "bullets". Does it mean "lead" or "bullets" here?
It can mean both! The word for bullets comes from the fact that they were historically made of lead. In this sentence, the context of comparing its weight to another metal, الفولاذ (steel), makes it clear that we are talking about the raw material "lead".
