Questions & Answers about بعض الشباب استخدموا الجهاز الحديث.
Why is there no word for "of" in the Arabic sentence, even though it literally translates to "some of the young men"?
The phrase بعض الشباب uses a special grammar structure called an Idafa (addition). In Arabic, when you put a quantifier like بعض (some) right next to a noun like الشباب (the youth), it automatically creates an "of" relationship. So, بعض الشباب means "some of the youth" without needing a separate word for "of".
Why does الشباب have الـ (the) attached to it if the English translation just says "some young men"?
In Arabic, to say "some [noun]" using بعض, the noun that follows it in this Idafa structure must be definite (having الـ). Even though we translate it smoothly into English as "some young men", the Arabic literally functions like "some of the young men".
Why does the verb استخدموا (they used) end with an extra letter alif (ا) that isn't pronounced?
The ending ـوا (pronounced "uu") shows that the action was done by a plural group ("they"). The final silent alif is a strict spelling rule in Arabic used after this plural "waw". It simply helps readers see that the "waw" is a plural ending and not just a normal letter belonging to the root word.
Why do both الجهاز (device) and الحديث (modern) start with الـ (the)?
