Questions & Answers about هل أنت متأكد؟
How would I ask a woman 'Are you sure?' instead?
The pronoun أنتَ is for a male. To ask a female, change the pronoun to أنتِ and add the feminine ending ـة to the adjective. The sentence becomes هل أنتِ متأكدة؟.
Where is the word for 'are' in this sentence?
There isn't one! Arabic doesn't use words for 'am,' 'is,' or 'are' in the present tense. You simply put the subject أنت (you) next to the adjective متأكد (sure). This type of sentence is called a nominal sentence.
Since we are learning about ليس, how would I say 'You are not sure'?
You would use the 'you (masculine)' form of ليس, which is لستَ. The sentence becomes لستَ متأكداً. Notice that the adjective gets an 'an' sound (and usually an extra alif) at the end because it is the target of ليس.
What exactly does هل do here?
هل is a question word used for yes/no questions. It works a bit like 'do' or 'are' at the beginning of an English question, turning the statement 'You are sure' into the question 'Are you sure?'.
