Questions & Answers about مفتاحها هنا.
How do you form "her key" from the word for "key"?
You take the basic noun مفتاح (key) and attach the possessive pronoun suffix ـها (her) directly to the end of it. This creates a single combined word: مفتاحها (her key).
Since ـها means "her", does the noun it attaches to need to be feminine too?
No! The word مفتاح (key) is a masculine noun. The suffix ـها only tells us that the owner is female. The gender of the object being owned (the key) doesn't restrict which possessive pronoun you use for the owner.
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
Arabic doesn't use "to be" verbs like "is" or "are" in simple present tense sentences. You simply state the subject (مفتاحها, her key) followed immediately by the information about it (هنا, here). Literally, it reads: "Her key here."
If I wanted to say "his key" instead, how would I change this?
You would replace the feminine suffix ـها (her) with the masculine suffix ـه (his). The sentence would become مفتاحه هنا (His key is here).
