Questions & Answers about الزوج هنا.
Is الزوج a masculine or feminine word?
It means "husband," so it is masculine by definition. Notice that it also does not end with a Taa' Marboota (ة). In Arabic, the vast majority of singular nouns that do not end in ة are masculine.
How do I change الزوج to mean "the wife"?
You just add the feminine marker, the Taa' Marboota (ة), to the end! "The wife" is الزوجة (az-zawja). Adding ة is the standard way to make a masculine noun feminine, which is extremely useful for talking about people and professions.
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
Arabic doesn't use a word for "is" or "are" in simple present-tense sentences. You simply put the subject (الزوج) and the location (هنا) side by side, and the "is" is automatically implied. These are called nominal sentences.
I notice the "L" in the word for "the" (ال) isn't pronounced in الزوج. Why is that?
The letter ز (zayn) is a "Sun Letter." When you add the prefix ال (al-) to a word starting with a Sun Letter, the "L" sound is skipped, and you emphasize or double the first letter of the word instead. So it is pronounced "az-zawj", not "al-zawj".
