Wardrobe Additions: Specific Clothing

In this lesson, we will expand your clothing vocabulary to describe outfits more precisely, covering specific names for warm-weather clothes, sleepwear, and footwear types.

Fit, Features, and Sleepwear

Let's start by adding some useful descriptive words to your shopping vocabulary. You can describe clothes as loose (فضفاض) or refer to inner layers and pockets as داخلي. Remember that in Arabic, adjectives follow the noun and must match its gender and definiteness.

When describing how clothes or bags are fastened, you can use the word for zipper (سحاب). For comfortable home attire, the word for pajamas is بيجامة.

Past Obligation and Everyday Clothing

Next, let's look at some specific clothing items: a skirt (تنورة), a sandal (صندل), a traditional garment (ثوب), and pants (سروال).

In the examples below, you will see the phrase كان يجب أن followed by a present tense verb. This translates to "had to" or "it was necessary to," allowing you to express past obligations like having to buy or remove an item of clothing.

Tops and Slippers

Finally, let's round out the wardrobe with a blouse (بلوزة) and light indoor footwear like slippers (شبشب).

Note that while "slippers" is plural in English, it is treated as a singular noun in Arabic when referring to a single pair.
