Take care of your furry and hooved friends! This lesson focuses on animal anatomy and veterinary terms to help you describe animal health in Arabic.
The Veterinary Clinic
Whether it is for a routine checkup or an emergency, it helps to know the basic term for "veterinary" or "veterinarian":
| veterinary | بيطريbaytari |
At the clinic, a doctor or nurse might need to check the animal's pulse (نبض), give an injection (حقنة), administer a vaccination (تطعيم), or even perform surgery (جراحة).
| The veterinarian decided to perform a surgery because of the injury.
| The veterinarian gave an injection to the dog. | أعطت الطبيبة البيطرية حقنة للكلب.a'tati ttabibatu albaytariyyatu huqnatan lilkalbi. |
| I want to check the dog's pulse.
Claws, Tails, and Feathers
To accurately describe the patients, you will need vocabulary for animal anatomy. Let's look at features common to pets and birds, such as a claw (مخلب), a tail (ذيل), and feathers (ريش).
| The veterinarian trimmed the cat's claw because of the wound.
| The horse moved its tail thanks to the medicine. | حرك الحصان ذيله بفضل الدواء.harraka al-hisânu dhaylahu bifadli ad-dawâ'i |
| The bird has beautiful feathers and short claws.
Hooves and Horns
When dealing with livestock and farm animals such as sheep, cows, and horses, you will also encounter specific terms for a hoof (حافر) and a horn (قرن).
| The sheep has a long horn and a strong hoof.
| We washed the horse's hoof and tail with water. | غسلنا حافر الحصان وذيله بالماء.ghasalnâ hâfira al-hisâni wa dhaylahu bil-mâ'i |
