Nouns of place and time (مَفْعَل / مَفْعِل)

Space and Action: Nouns of Place

When you visit a modern art gallery, you navigate physical spaces defined by the actions that happen inside them. In Arabic, you can derive the word for a location directly from its associated verb.

By adding the prefix مـ to a three-letter verb root, Arabic creates "Nouns of Place and Time" (اسم المكان والزمان). This tells you exactly where or when an action occurs.

The مَفْعِل Pattern

There are two main patterns for these nouns. The first is مَفْعِل. Notice how the middle root letter takes a كسرة (ـِ).

We use this pattern for verbs like عَرَضَ (to show or exhibit). The place where showing happens becomes a مَعْرِض (exhibition).

The مَفْعَل Pattern

The second pattern is مَفْعَل, where the middle root letter takes a فتحة (ـَ). For example, the verb جَمَعَ (to gather) transforms into مَجْمَع (a complex or gathering place).

From the root for drawing or painting (رَسَمَ), we get the word for a studio: مَرْسَم.

The place where you view or witness (شَهِدَ) something is a مَشْهَد (scene).

Likewise, the place where you exit (خَرَجَ) naturally becomes a مَخْرَج (exit).

Returning to مَفْعِل

As you finish your gallery tour, you might want to sit and rest. The verb for sitting is جَلَسَ. It uses the first pattern (مَفْعِل) to create its noun of place: مَجْلِس (a seating area).
