Literature & Storytelling

Whether you are reading a classic novel, watching a play, or analyzing poetry, having the right vocabulary is essential for discussing literary themes. In this lesson, we will expand your reading vocabulary with terms related to literature, plot structures, and literary devices.

Literature and Realism

The general word for "literature" is أدب. When describing a story or a piece of writing that closely resembles real life, you can use the adjective واقعي (realistic).

Story Structure and Genres

A well-crafted story relies on a strong structure. Most stories begin with a مقدمة (introduction) to set the stage.

The sequence of events that make up the main narrative is known as the حبكة (plot). This plot can take the form of a serious or sorrowful مأساة (tragedy).

Conversely, a lighter story meant to entertain and amuse may be written as a كوميديا (comedy).

Finally, the narrative typically wraps up and resolves its themes with a خاتمة (conclusion).

Literary Devices and Interactions

A compelling plot is usually driven by some form of صراع (conflict), which is often revealed through the characters speaking in حوار (dialogue).

To add depth and striking imagery to the writing, authors frequently use literary devices such as an استعارة (metaphor).
