Expressing Probability with لعلّ
When discussing weather forecasts, you often need to express probability or hope. In Arabic, you can use the particle لعلّ (perhaps / hopefully) to express that something might happen.
Just like لكنّ from the previous lesson, لعلّ belongs to a special family of Arabic particles. This means it is typically followed immediately by a noun or an attached pronoun.
| Perhaps the weather is beautiful tomorrow. | لعل الطقس جميل غدا.la'alla t-taqsa jamîlun ghadan |
| He read the weather report, perhaps the rain is severe. | هو قرأ نشرة الطقس، لعل المطر شديد.huwa qara'a nashratat-taqsi, la'allal-matara shadîdun. |
Making Comparisons with كأنّ
To compare a situation to something else, you use the particle كأنّ (as if). It follows the exact same grammatical rules as لعلّ, meaning the subject of the comparison directly follows the particle.
| The winds are severe as if a storm is coming. | الرياح شديدة كأن عاصفة قادمة.ar-riyâhu shadîdatun ka'anna 'âsifatan qâdimah |
Attaching Pronouns to Particles
Because these particles behave identically to the ones you've already learned, you can attach pronoun suffixes directly to them. For example, when referring to masculine nouns like rain (المطر), you can attach the masculine pronoun to create كأنه (as if it).
| The rain is heavy as if it is a sea. | المطر غزير كأنه بحر.al-mataru ghazeerun ka'annahu bahrun |
Finally, you can also use these particles to talk about actions that might happen in the future. In this case, the particle is followed by a noun, which is then followed by a future tense verb to describe what might occur.
| Did you hear the report? Perhaps the snow will fall. | هل سمعت النشرة؟ لعل الثلج سينزل.hal sami'ta an-nashrata? la'alla ath-thalja sayanzilu. |
