### The Active Participle (اسم الفاعل)

In Arabic, the active participle (اسم الفاعل) describes the doer of an action. For Form I verbs, it follows the predictable pattern **فَاعِل**, formed by adding an *alif* after the first root letter and a *kasra* under the second root letter.

Active participles are highly versatile. They frequently function as nouns, adjectives, or indicators of an ongoing state.

### Participles as Nouns: Demographics

Many active participles act as standard nouns to categorize groups of people. Because they behave exactly like regular nouns, they can take plural endings (such as the sound masculine plural ـون or ـين) and be used in إضافة (possessive) constructions to discuss a census (إحصاء), numbers (عدد), or percentages (نسبة).

For example, from the verb سَكَنَ (to live/reside), we derive the active participle سَاكِن (resident).

However, active participles can also indicate a current state or ongoing action. When describing a living situation, سَاكِن functions like the English present continuous tense ("am living").

### Expressing Posture and Motion

Just like سَاكِن, active participles derived from verbs of motion, posture, or location are commonly used to describe an ongoing state rather than a general habit. 

Common examples include جَالِس (sitting), وَاقِف (standing), and ذَاهِب (going). In these contexts, they act exactly like the present continuous tense in English ("is sitting", "are standing").
