Postverbal lại can point back to an earlier location, state, or occurrence: quay lại “turn back/return,” đọc lại “read again,” and đóng cửa lại “close the door (back/up).” These meanings are related by a general idea of reversal or recurrence, but they are not interchangeable. The verb, its object, and the discourse context determine whether lại describes a return path, restoration of a state, or repetition of an action.
Return along a path
After a motion verb, lại commonly means back or return toward a prior place or reference point. The path reverses or retraces an earlier movement.
Khi sắp tới bến, chị ấy phải quay lại lấy điện thoại.
When she was almost at the station, she had to turn back to get her phone.
Anh ấy bước ra cửa rồi quay lại nhìn tôi.
He walked to the door, then turned back and looked at me.
Bao giờ chị trở lại Hà Nội?
When will you return to Hà Nội?
Quay lại focuses on turning back; trở lại means return or resume and is common in both speech and writing. A following location can name the endpoint: trở lại Hà Nội. The prior location may be recoverable from context rather than the speaker’s current physical position.
Compare away and return:
Mang hồ sơ đi, ký xong thì mang lại đây.
Take the file away; when it’s signed, bring it back here.
Directional đi removes the file from the current center. In this discourse, the earlier outward movement gives lại đây its return reading, while đây names “here” as the endpoint. Deictic combinations and their regional frequency vary, so the return interpretation comes from the whole context rather than from lại alone.
Without an established outward path, however, lại đây can simply mean movement toward “here,” not necessarily return to a place occupied earlier:
Lại đây ngồi với tôi một lát.
Come over here and sit with me for a while.
The prior discourse therefore separates a true away-and-back reading from this centripetal “over here” use. Regional frequency varies, but no earlier visit to the speaker’s location is required in the second example.
The opposing away-path and the ambiguity of sentence-final đi are developed on the postverbal đi page.
Repetition: doing the event again
After many activity verbs, lại asks for or reports a repeated performance. The event occurs another time, usually because the first version was missed, incorrect, or worth reconsidering.
Tôi nghe không rõ, bạn nói lại được không?
I didn’t hear clearly; could you say it again?
Trước khi gửi, chị đọc lại email một lần nữa.
Before sending it, read the email again.
Tối qua tôi xem lại bộ phim đó và vẫn thấy hay.
Last night I watched that film again and still thought it was good.
Postverbal lại has scope over the preceding predicate: nói lại repeats the saying, đọc lại email repeats the reading. Một lần nữa can reinforce recurrence but is not required.
Vietnamese also has preverbal lại in patterns such as Anh ấy lại quên chìa khóa rồi “He forgot his keys again.” That position often presents recurrence as a discourse-level development and may convey irritation or surprise. This page concentrates on postverbal lại, especially the tight combinations used for redoing or returning.
Anh ấy lại quên chìa khóa rồi.
He’s forgotten his keys again.
Anh ấy quay lại lấy chìa khóa rồi.
He has gone back to get his keys.
These sentences prove that placement and predicate choice matter. The first reports a repeated forgetting; the second reports return motion.
Restoration and closure
Some postverbal lại sequences restore an earlier or expected configuration rather than literally repeat an identical action. With opening and closing, covering, putting, or gathering, English often uses “back,” “up,” or no particle at all.
Ra khỏi phòng nhớ đóng cửa lại nhé.
Remember to close the door when you leave the room.
Đọc xong thì gấp tờ giấy lại.
When you’ve finished reading, fold the sheet of paper back up.
Cô ấy nhặt các mảnh vỡ rồi gom lại một chỗ.
She picked up the broken pieces and gathered them together in one place.
In đóng cửa lại, lại can evoke restoration to the closed state, especially after the door has been open, but it often also reinforces the achieved closure. The sentence need not mean “close the door for a second time.” Similarly, gom lại means gather together; recurrence is not the only possible analysis.
This is a genuine lexical-semantic difficulty. There is no mechanical English gloss for every occurrence. Learn frequent combinations and ask what prior state, location, or event is being recovered.
Iconic order within a compact sequence
The core order remains action → return/repetition/result. Vietnamese does not insert English infinitival to or split the construction according to English particle placement.
| Sequence | Later contribution | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| quay lại | reversal of path | turn back / return |
| đọc lại | repetition | read again / reread |
| đóng cửa lại | restored or reinforced closed state | close the door |
| gom lại | convergence into one set/place | gather together |
| mang lại đây | movement toward here, often return in context | bring over/back here |
Broader serial patterns show the same constructional principle:
| Sequence | Relation |
|---|---|
| đi mua đồ | motion → purpose |
| mang sách về | transport → homeward direction |
| ăn hết cơm | activity → total endpoint |
| mở cửa ra | caused change → outward/open result |
| làm cho tôi hiểu | cause → resulting understanding |
You cannot infer the relation from “two verbs in a row” alone. Semantic compatibility, shared participants, and context tell you whether the sequence expresses purpose, path, totality, or cause.
In these lại combinations, the return, repetition, or restored state is integrated with the first predicate. Quay lại lấy ví keeps one understood mover: that person turns back and then gets the wallet. If the following action has a different subject, Vietnamese normally makes the clause boundary explicit, as in Tôi quay lại để anh ấy đưa chìa khóa cho tôi “I went back so that he could give me the key.” The first verb can also supply manner or path shape—quay contributes reversal in quay lại—while lại locates that movement relative to an earlier path.
Completion and negation
Aspect and negation can scope over the repeated or returning event.
Tôi chưa đọc lại bản hợp đồng.
I haven’t reread the contract yet.
Chúng tôi đã quay lại tìm nhưng vẫn không thấy chìa khóa.
We went back to look, but we still couldn’t find the key.
Cô ấy thử lắp lại cái nắp nhưng không lắp được.
She tried to put the lid back on but couldn’t manage it.
In the final example, lắp lại targets restoration of the assembled state, while không … được denies successful achievement. Return or attempted restoration does not guarantee the endpoint.
A natural dialogue: three readings of lại
Linh: Cậu đọc lại tin nhắn này xem, tớ viết có khó hiểu không? — Phúc: Câu cuối hơi lạ. Cậu viết lại đi. — Linh: Được rồi. À, cậu mang quyển sổ lại đây giúp tớ với. — Phúc: Tớ vừa mang đi mà!
Linh: Reread this message and tell me whether it’s hard to understand. — Phúc: The last sentence is a bit odd. Rewrite it. — Linh: All right. Oh, bring the notebook back here for me. — Phúc: I just took it away!
Đọc lại is repetition, viết lại means rewrite, and mang … lại đây is a return path. Phúc’s mang đi supplies the opposing away-path. Final đi after viết lại is a conversational prompt—“go ahead and rewrite it”—not another directional movement.
A decision aid for lại
| Question | Likely reading | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Does a participant reverse toward an earlier place? | return/back | quay lại |
| Is the same activity performed another time? | repetition | đọc lại |
| Is an earlier configuration recovered? | restoration | gấp lại |
| Do separate items converge? | together/consolidation | gom lại |
| Does lại occur before the main predicate? | broader recurrence, often with stance | lại quên rồi |
Common Mistakes
Translating every lại as “again”
❌ Anh ấy quay lần nữa.
This means ‘He turned again,’ not the intended ‘He went back.’
✅ Anh ấy quay lại lấy điện thoại.
He went back to get his phone.
With quay, the natural construction is path reversal, not simple repetition.
Inserting English to
❌ Tôi quay để lại lấy ví.
Incorrect for ‘I went back to get my wallet’; the added để breaks the return combination.
✅ Tôi quay lại lấy ví.
I went back to get my wallet.
Quay lại forms the return predicate; lấy ví then gives the purpose.
Using preverbal lại when a neutral redo is intended
⚠️ Tôi lại đọc email.
This can mean ‘I read the email again,’ often presenting the recurrence as a new discourse development; it is not the neutral tight instruction ‘reread the email.’
✅ Bạn đọc lại email trước khi gửi nhé.
Reread the email before sending it.
Preverbal and postverbal lại overlap but differ in information structure and stance. The warning symbol marks a mismatch with the intended neutral instruction, not an ungrammatical sentence. Use the established postverbal combination for a neutral request to redo the action.
Assuming return guarantees success
❌ Tôi quay lại tìm, nên chắc chắn đã tìm được.
Faulty inference — returning to search does not entail finding it.
✅ Tôi quay lại tìm nhưng vẫn không thấy.
I went back to look, but still didn’t find it.
The return and purpose are integrated; successful result must still be stated.
Key Takeaways
- After motion verbs, lại often marks return toward an earlier place.
- After activity verbs, it can mark repetition: nói lại, đọc lại, viết lại.
- With change-of-state and arrangement verbs, it can mark restoration, closure, or gathering rather than literal repetition.
- Postverbal and preverbal lại are not freely interchangeable.
- Read the whole event structure; do not assign lại one fixed English translation.
- The choice between initial motion verbs đi and đến is the subject of the next page.
