Telicity is the presence of an inherent endpoint: an event is telic when its description builds toward a point at which the event counts as complete. Đi đến ga “go to the station” has the station as a path endpoint; đi dạo “take a walk” need not culminate anywhere. Đọc xong báo cáo ends when the report is finished; bare đọc can continue without a lexical finish.
Vietnamese does not mark telicity by conjugating the verb. Objects, numeral–classifier phrases, path and result complements, measure expressions, xong/hết, successful được, aspectual viewpoint, and discourse all contribute. Telicity is also not identical to actual completion: a phrase can contain a natural endpoint even if the sentence says that the participant failed to reach it. This page concerns event boundedness; omission of an understood predicate in short answers is left to Predicate Ellipsis.
Telic potential versus completed actuality
Compare an open-ended activity, a goal-directed event, and an explicitly completed event:
| Phrase | Event structure | Completion asserted? |
|---|---|---|
| Tôi đọc suốt hai giờ. | unbounded reading activity measured by duration | no |
| Tôi đọc một cuốn sách. | a bounded object supplies a potential endpoint | not necessarily in every context |
| Tôi đọc xong cuốn sách. | reading culminates at the end of the book | yes |
| Tôi định đọc xong nhưng không kịp. | intended culmination is represented | explicitly no |
Tối qua tôi đọc cuốn sách đó, nhưng mới đến chương ba.
Last night I read/worked on that book, but I only reached chapter three.
Tối qua tôi đọc xong cuốn sách đó.
Last night I finished reading that book.
The first sentence shows why a definite object alone does not always assert total completion in Vietnamese discourse. Xong removes the uncertainty. English often lets tense and the choice between read and was reading carry part of this contrast; Vietnamese can state the boundary lexically.
Quantized objects can bound incremental events
With consumption, creation, and incremental change, the object’s quantity often measures progress. Ăn cơm can describe eating as an activity; ăn hết bát cơm reaches the endpoint when the bowl’s contents are gone. A numeral–classifier phrase can supply a bounded quantity, though discourse still determines whether culmination is asserted.
Tôi ăn một ít cơm rồi, nhưng chưa ăn hết bát này.
I have eaten some rice, but I haven’t finished this bowl.
Em bé ăn hết một quả chuối trong vài phút.
The baby ate a whole banana in a few minutes.
Nhóm kỹ thuật đã sửa được ba máy trong buổi sáng.
The technical team managed to repair three machines during the morning.
Hết marks exhaustion of the relevant quantity. Ba máy partitions the repairing into three countable accomplishments; được presents successful attainment. Yet được has several other functions—ability, permission, affected-event marking—and must be interpreted from its position and construction. It is not a general telic suffix.
Mass or nonspecific objects tend to support activity readings: uống nước, ăn cơm, viết thư in a general description. But Vietnamese noun phrases do not map mechanically onto English article categories. A specific object may be understood from context without a determiner, and an object’s boundedness interacts with results such as xong/hết.
Result expressions create a culmination
Vietnamese productively combines predicates with result-oriented elements. These identify what condition counts as the endpoint.
| Expression | Endpoint | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V + xong | task is completed | viết xong báo cáo |
| V + hết | quantity is exhausted / members are covered | uống hết nước |
| V + được | result is successfully attained | tìm được chìa khóa |
| V + directional/result expression | directed motion or resulting state | mở ra, đóng lại, bật lên |
| làm + participant + result | caused result state | làm cửa mở tung |
Cuối cùng tôi cũng tìm được chìa khóa ở dưới ghế.
I finally managed to find the key under the chair.
Gió làm cửa đóng sầm lại.
The wind made the door slam shut.
Anh nhớ tắt hết đèn trước khi đi nhé.
Remember to turn off all the lights before you leave.
The key’s discovery, the door’s closed state, and total coverage of the lights supply endpoints. Đi in the last example receives a departure reading from context; no inflection marks future or command force.
Paths and destinations bound motion
Motion without a goal can be atelic: đi bộ quanh hồ “walk around the lake,” chạy trong công viên “run in the park.” A delimited path or destination can supply a culmination.
Chúng tôi đi bộ quanh hồ suốt một giờ.
We walked around the lake for a whole hour.
Chúng tôi đi bộ đến khách sạn chỉ trong hai mươi phút.
We walked to the hotel in only twenty minutes.
Tàu đến ga lúc sáu giờ đúng.
The train reached the station at exactly six.
In the second clause, đến khách sạn identifies the end of the path. In the third, lexical đến profiles arrival. Ở khách sạn, by contrast, is a location state, not a path. English speakers should not import to everywhere: Vietnamese đến + destination, ở + location, and đi + vehicle/activity/path have their own complement frames.
Time phrases diagnose—but do not mechanically determine—telicity
Vietnamese commonly distinguishes duration with suốt + time or trong + interval from completion within a span, where chỉ trong + time, mất + time để..., or an explicit result makes the reading clear.
Tôi viết báo cáo suốt ba giờ.
I worked on the report for three hours.
Tôi viết xong báo cáo chỉ trong ba giờ.
I finished writing the report in only three hours.
Tôi mất ba giờ để viết xong báo cáo.
It took me three hours to finish writing the report.
These are useful diagnostics, not inviolable formulas. Trong ba giờ may mean “during a three-hour period” or “within three hours” depending on predicate and context. Suốt strongly emphasizes continuous duration; xong provides the endpoint explicitly.
Aspectual particles view the boundary; they do not create all of it
Đang places the viewpoint inside an event, đã presents its occurrence as prior/established, and sentence-final rồi often signals a reached boundary or newly relevant state. None is synonymous with telicity.
Tôi đang viết báo cáo, nhưng chưa biết bao giờ mới xong.
I’m writing the report, but I don’t know when I’ll finish.
Tôi đã viết báo cáo, nhưng còn phải sửa nhiều.
I have worked on/written the report, but it still needs a lot of revision.
Tôi viết xong báo cáo rồi.
I have finished writing the report now.
The same lexical material is viewed from inside, established as prior, or presented at its culmination. Đã can occur with an atelic activity; đang can occur inside a telic accomplishment before its endpoint; rồi can mark a new state. Do not translate these one-for-one as English conjugations.
Six baseline predicates and their boundaries
| Baseline | Default profile | Possible boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Tôi ăn cơm. | meal/consumption activity | Tôi ăn hết bát cơm. |
| Cô ấy là giáo viên. | classification state | use trở thành for a transition into the role |
| Trời lạnh. | property state | Trời bắt đầu lạnh marks onset |
| Tôi có một câu hỏi. | possession/availability state | Tôi nghĩ ra được một câu hỏi marks attainment |
| Ở đây có Wi-Fi. | existential state | Wi-Fi bắt đầu hoạt động marks onset |
| Tôi thấy lỗi đó. | perception or achievement-like noticing | cuối cùng... thấy được highlights successful attainment |
Cô ấy là giáo viên; sau nhiều năm học, em gái cô ấy cũng trở thành giáo viên.
She is a teacher; after years of study, her younger sister also became a teacher.
Là giáo viên is a state. Trở thành giáo viên introduces the boundary at which the role begins. Inserting là before lạnh would not create a boundary; bắt đầu lạnh does.
A natural dialogue
A: Anh làm xong bản trình bày chưa? B: Tôi làm suốt buổi sáng rồi mà mới xong phần đầu. A: Hai giờ nữa khách đến đấy. B: Tôi biết. Nếu chị Mai sửa được ba biểu đồ còn lại, chúng ta sẽ hoàn thành trước cuộc họp.
A: Have you finished the presentation? B: I’ve worked on it all morning and have only finished the first part. A: The clients will arrive in two hours. B: I know. If Mai can successfully fix the remaining three charts, we’ll finish before the meeting.
Làm suốt buổi sáng measures unbounded work; xong phần đầu marks a partial culmination; đến is an arrival achievement; sửa được ba biểu đồ combines a counted object with attainment; hoàn thành lexically profiles completion. Context, not verb inflection, relates these events to the schedule.
Decision aid
- Is there a result state, exhausted quantity, destination, or completed task that defines “done”? The event is telic.
- Does the phrase merely measure how long an activity continues? It is likely atelic in that construal.
- Does a counted object measure progress? It can supply a boundary, especially with xong/hết/được.
- Does the sentence merely mention a definite object? Do not infer completion without contextual support.
- Does đã/đang/rồi choose a viewpoint? Keep viewpoint distinct from the endpoint supplied by the event phrase.
- Can the intended culmination be canceled—định... nhưng không kịp? Then telic structure is present even though completion failed.
Common Mistakes
1. Assuming đã always means “finished.”
❌ Tôi đã đọc cuốn sách, vậy nên đọc xong rồi.
Incorrect inference: prior reading does not necessarily entail completion.
✅ Tôi đã đọc cuốn sách, nhưng chưa đọc xong.
I have read/worked on the book, but I haven’t finished it.
2. Using a duration phrase when completion is the point.
❌ Tôi viết báo cáo suốt hai giờ.
Wrong for the intended ‘I completed the report in two hours’: this only measures the writing activity.
✅ Tôi viết xong báo cáo chỉ trong hai giờ.
I finished writing the report in only two hours.
3. Inserting là before a property to imitate English be.
❌ Trời bắt đầu là lạnh.
Incorrect: là does not introduce the onset of a property.
✅ Trời bắt đầu lạnh.
It is starting to get cold.
4. Copying English motion prepositions.
❌ Chúng tôi đi đến ở khách sạn.
Incorrect mixture of destination đến and location ở.
✅ Chúng tôi đi đến khách sạn rồi ở đó hai đêm.
We went to the hotel and stayed there for two nights.
5. Treating bị as a completion marker.
❌ Tôi bị làm xong báo cáo.
Incorrect: bị marks an adverse affected situation, not successful completion.
✅ Tôi làm xong báo cáo rồi.
I have finished the report.
Key Takeaways
Vietnamese constructs telicity across the predicate phrase. Quantized objects, destinations, results, and xong/hết/được can identify an endpoint; suốt and open-ended activities foreground duration. Đã, đang, and rồi contribute viewpoint rather than functioning as telic conjugations. Analyze what counts as “done,” then ask separately whether the sentence says that endpoint was actually reached.
