Trả Lời: Answer and Respond

Vietnamese trả lời covers answering a person or question and responding with linguistic content. It is a two-syllable compound written with a space, and both syllables retain their tones. The form never conjugates: time, completion, and ongoing response come from expressions such as đã trả lời, đang trả lời, and chưa trả lời.

The crucial task is not memorizing invented tense forms but learning what can follow trả lời. A following person is the addressee, a following noun such as câu hỏi is the prompt being answered, and rằng/là or direct quotation introduces content. Narrative kể belongs to the next reference page.

Answering a person or a question

Both the addressee and the prompt can be direct complements. Trả lời tôi means answer me; trả lời câu hỏi means answer the question. When both roles matter, Vietnamese often states the prompt and leaves the addressee recoverable, or introduces the addressee with cho in a context where a response is provided for/to that person.

Bạn chưa trả lời câu hỏi cuối cùng của tôi.

You haven’t answered my last question.

Anh nhìn tôi nhưng không trả lời.

He looked at me but did not answer.

Chị trả lời giúp tôi câu này được không?

Could you answer this question for me?

The last example contains giúp tôi, a benefactive “for me,” rather than mechanically translating English word order. Trả lời cho ai is possible when the recipient or beneficiary is emphasized, but bare trả lời ai is often the simpler way to say “answer someone.”

💡
After trả lời, identify the role of the next phrase. Trả lời cô giáo answers the teacher; trả lời câu hỏi của cô giáo answers the teacher’s question.

Introducing the content of an answer

Rằng introduces reported propositional content and is especially at home in careful writing. Là is extremely common before reported content in speech. Both can be omitted when the boundary is already clear, particularly before an interrogative expression such as vì sao, khi nào, or có...không.

Đại diện công ty trả lời rằng thông tin đó chưa được xác nhận.

The company representative answered that the information had not been confirmed. (formal)

Tôi trả lời là cuối tuần này tôi không về được.

I answered that I couldn’t come home this weekend. (informal/neutral)

Không ai trả lời được vì sao hệ thống lại ngừng hoạt động.

No one could answer why the system stopped working.

With direct quotation, the reporting expression may precede or follow the quote. Punctuation does the work that a complementizer would otherwise do.

Cô ấy trả lời: “Tôi cần thêm một ngày để suy nghĩ.”

She answered, ‘I need one more day to think.’

Messages, interviews, and calls

Modern usage extends naturally to communication channels: trả lời email/tin nhắn means reply to an email/message. Phản hồi is frequent in institutional and business settings (formal/professional) and often emphasizes feedback or an official response; ordinary trả lời is not wrong merely because the medium is written.

Bộ phận hỗ trợ thường trả lời email trong vòng hai ngày làm việc.

The support department usually answers emails within two business days. (professional)

Trả lời phỏng vấn means respond in an interview or give an interview; the interviewer can follow của or a context-specific phrase. Trả lời điện thoại/cuộc gọi is possible for answering a phone call. In everyday speech, nghe máy “pick up/answer the phone” is also very common and focuses on accepting the connection rather than the verbal response.

Bộ trưởng từ chối trả lời phỏng vấn sau cuộc họp.

The minister declined to give an interview after the meeting. (formal/news)

Tôi gọi ba lần mà anh ấy không nghe máy cũng không trả lời tin nhắn.

I called three times, but he neither picked up nor answered my messages.

English answer also covers “answer the door,” “answer a mathematical problem,” and “answer a need.” Vietnamese does not extend trả lời uniformly to all of them. Someone ra mở cửa “goes to open the door,” giải bài toán “solves the problem,” and a policy may đáp ứng nhu cầu “meet a need.”

Quality and manner of response

Adverbs and result expressions describe how adequate the answer is: trả lời đúng/sai “answer correctly/incorrectly,” trả lời rõ ràng “answer clearly,” trả lời thẳng “answer directly,” trả lời qua loa “answer perfunctorily,” and trả lời vòng vo “answer evasively.” Trả lời được often means be able to answer successfully, not merely receive permission.

Em hãy đọc kỹ đề rồi trả lời ngắn gọn, rõ ràng.

Read the prompt carefully, then answer briefly and clearly.

Anh ấy trả lời vòng vo nên mọi người càng nghi ngờ.

He answered evasively, so everyone became even more suspicious.

Đáp can mean answer/respond (formal/literary) and survives in combinations such as đáp lời, hồi đáp, and đáp lại. It is not a universally interchangeable, more elegant substitute for trả lời. In everyday conversation, trả lời is the dependable neutral choice.

Aspect, negation, and questions

Đã trả lời marks the answering event as completed. Đang trả lời presents it as in progress; vừa trả lời locates it just before now; chưa trả lời means that an expected response has not yet occurred. Trả lời rồi often reassures the listener that the response has been sent or given.

Tôi vừa trả lời thư của trường, anh kiểm tra giúp tôi nhé.

I’ve just replied to the school’s letter; please check it for me.

Giám đốc đang trả lời các câu hỏi của cổ đông.

The director is answering the shareholders’ questions. (formal/business)

Questions often take đã...chưa, trả lời thế nào, or trả lời gì. A completed response need not be correct or satisfactory; completion and quality are separate.

The complement changes the response

— Cậu trả lời cô giáo chưa? — Tớ trả lời câu hỏi rồi, nhưng chưa trả lời tin nhắn riêng của cô. — Vậy nhớ trả lời cô trước tối nay nhé.

— Have you answered the teacher yet? — I answered the question, but I haven’t replied to her private message. — Then remember to reply to her before tonight.

The first and last occurrences select a person as addressee. The middle occurrences select a question and a message. English answer/reply may encourage a learner to add different prepositions, but Vietnamese distinguishes the roles primarily through the noun phrase and context.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English reply to with a general-purpose preposition. Vietnamese normally places the addressee directly after trả lời or uses a contextually motivated cho.

❌ Tôi trả lời với khách hàng ngay.

Unnatural for neutral ‘I answer the customer right away’ — với does not function like English ‘to’ here.

✅ Tôi trả lời khách hàng ngay.

I answer the customer right away.

2. Treating every English answer as trả lời. A door is opened, not linguistically answered.

❌ Có người bấm chuông; em ra trả lời cửa đi.

Incorrect — Vietnamese does not extend trả lời to ‘answer the door.’

✅ Có người bấm chuông; em ra mở cửa đi.

Someone rang the bell; go open the door.

3. Confusing a response with a narrative. Trả lời answers a prompt; kể recounts events or a story.

❌ Bà trả lời cho cháu chuyện ngày xưa.

Incorrect for ‘Grandma told me a story about the old days’ — there is no question being answered.

✅ Bà kể cho cháu nghe chuyện ngày xưa.

Grandma told me a story about the old days.

4. Assuming đã trả lời means the answer was correct. Aspect marks completion, while đúng/sai evaluates content.

❌ Em đã trả lời nên chắc chắn em đúng.

Faulty inference — having answered does not mean the answer was correct.

✅ Em đã trả lời nhưng trả lời sai.

I answered, but I answered incorrectly.

Key Takeaways

  • Trả lời + person selects the addressee; trả lời + question/message selects the prompt.
  • Use rằng (formal/written) or là (conversational/neutral) to introduce answer content when needed.
  • Learn trả lời phỏng vấn, trả lời email, and trả lời điện thoại/cuộc gọi as constructions.
  • Vietnamese uses other predicates for English expressions such as “answer the door” and “answer a need.”
