Vietnamese sống covers both being alive and conducting a life: a person can còn sống “still be alive,” sống ở Huế “live in Huế,” sống một mình “live alone,” or sống bằng nghề dạy học “make a living by teaching.” The form itself does not conjugate. Its interpretation comes from aspect words, complements, result elements, and established collocations.
That makes sống a useful example of how to learn a Vietnamese predicate: map the constructions instead of inventing past, present, and participial forms. English live points in roughly the right direction, but it does not license the same prepositions or objects. Literal death and the intensifying uses of chết belong to the dedicated chết page.

| sống sót / sống lại | survive / come back to life | sống sót sau vụ cháy |
Being alive: còn sống, vẫn sống, and sống sót
Bare sống can mean “be alive,” but Vietnamese often adds còn when the relevant contrast is death: còn sống “still/alive rather than dead.” Vẫn sống stresses continuation despite time or difficulty, while vẫn còn sống combines both perspectives. None is a translation of an English copula plus an adjective; sống is already the predicate.
Sau ca phẫu thuật, ông ấy vẫn còn sống và đã tỉnh lại.
After the operation, he is still alive and has regained consciousness.
Con cá này còn sống, đừng cho vào ngăn đá.
This fish is still alive; don't put it in the freezer.
Sống sót is eventive: it means survive a danger or disaster. The source of danger commonly follows sau, qua, or a contextually clear noun phrase. Thoát chết means narrowly escape death and highlights how close the danger came; it is not identical to neutral sống sót.
Chỉ có ba người sống sót sau vụ tai nạn.
Only three people survived the accident.
Residence and household relations
For residence, the dependable frame is sống ở + place. Ở locates the life, and it should not be dropped merely because English says live in. A time expression can follow or precede the frame. Sống tại is a more formal alternative found in profiles and administrative prose (formal); everyday conversation favors sống ở.
Tôi đã sống ở Cần Thơ gần sáu năm.
I lived in Cần Thơ for nearly six years.
Hiện nay chị ấy sống tại Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.
She currently resides in Ho Chi Minh City. (formal)
Sống với ai and sống cùng ai usually mean live with someone. Cùng foregrounds sharing the arrangement; với is more neutral. Sống chung can mean live together or share a household, and in some contexts it suggests a romantic couple cohabiting, so context matters. Sống riêng means maintain a separate household; sống một mình means live alone.
Sau khi tốt nghiệp, Minh vẫn sống cùng bố mẹ để tiết kiệm tiền.
After graduating, Minh still lives with his parents to save money.
Hai người đã sống chung nhiều năm nhưng chưa đăng ký kết hôn.
The two have lived together for many years but have not registered their marriage.
A way of life and a means of support
After sống, a manner expression describes how someone conducts life: sống giản dị “live simply,” sống tử tế “live decently,” sống khỏe “live healthily,” sống vui “live happily,” and sống hết mình “live wholeheartedly.” This pattern is productive, but not every English adjective produces a natural Vietnamese phrase. Learn common combinations as units.
Bà tôi luôn dặn con cháu phải sống tử tế với mọi người.
My grandmother always reminds her descendants to treat people decently and live with integrity.
Sau lần ốm nặng, anh ấy muốn sống chậm lại và dành thời gian cho gia đình.
After a serious illness, he wants to slow down and devote time to his family.
Sống bằng + source/occupation states what supports someone materially: sống bằng lương, sống bằng nghề may, sống bằng việc bán hàng trực tuyến. Kiếm sống bằng... explicitly means earn a living by. Sống nhờ + person/resource instead says that survival or subsistence depends on that support, sometimes with an implication of limited independence. Nhờ can also neutrally credit a life-saving resource.
Gia đình cô ấy đã sống bằng nghề đánh cá suốt ba thế hệ.
Her family has made a living from fishing for three generations.
Trong thời gian thất nghiệp, anh sống nhờ tiền tiết kiệm.
While unemployed, he lived off his savings.
Aspect, duration, and change
Đã sống ở... presents a period of residence as prior or completed; từng sống ở... marks life experience; đang sống ở... gives the current residence. With a duration plus rồi, sống ở đây ba năm rồi normally describes a situation begun three years ago and still relevant now. Sống được + duration asks or states how long life or residence lasted, depending on context.
Tôi từng sống ở miền Trung nên khá quen với mùa mưa.
I once lived in central Vietnam, so I am quite used to the rainy season.
Bác sống ở khu này được bao lâu rồi?
How long have you lived in this neighborhood?
With the alive sense, đang sống is possible when presenting life as an ongoing circumstance, but còn sống is usually more idiomatic when the simple issue is alive versus dead. Sống lại means return to life, or figuratively become lively again. Hồi sinh is a more formal word for revival (formal).
Khu phố cổ như sống lại khi lễ hội bắt đầu.
The old quarter seemed to come alive again when the festival began.
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi sống ở Quy Nhơn. | I live in Quy Nhơn. |
| negative | Tôi không sống một mình. | I do not live alone. |
| question | Cụ ấy còn sống không? | Is that elderly person still alive? |
| aspect-marked | Chúng tôi đã sống ở đây mười năm. | We have lived/lived here for ten years. |
| idiomatic collocation | Anh ấy sống bằng nghề sửa xe. | He makes a living repairing vehicles. |
The complement changes the interpretation
— Cô Lan giờ sống ở đâu? — Cô sống với con gái ở Nha Trang. Sau vụ tai nạn, ai cũng mừng vì cô còn sống. — Thế cô sống bằng gì? — Cô nhận may quần áo tại nhà.
— Where does Lan live now? — She lives with her daughter in Nha Trang. After the accident, everyone was glad she was alive. — So how does she support herself? — She does sewing work at home.
The same unchanged form sống receives three readings from its surroundings: ở đâu asks about residence, còn sống contrasts life with death, and sống bằng gì asks about livelihood. A conjugation chart could not capture these differences; a construction map does.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English “be alive” with là. Sống/còn sống functions as the predicate without là.
❌ Sau tai nạn, anh ấy là sống.
Incorrect — là does not turn sống into the adjective ‘alive.’
✅ Sau tai nạn, anh ấy vẫn còn sống.
After the accident, he is still alive.
2. Copying English “in” with trong in a neutral residence statement. Place names normally enter the residence frame with ở, not a word-for-word equivalent of English in.
❌ Tôi sống trong Hà Nội từ năm ngoái.
Unnatural transfer of English ‘live in’ — trong presents containment rather than the ordinary residence relation.
✅ Tôi sống ở Hà Nội từ năm ngoái.
I have lived in Hà Nội since last year.
3. Translating English “live with a problem” word for word. Vietnamese sống với primarily suggests sharing life or a household; toleration needs a context-appropriate predicate.
❌ Chúng ta phải sống với lỗi này trong phần mềm.
Awkward calque for ‘live with this bug’ — it sounds overly literal.
✅ Chúng ta tạm thời phải chấp nhận lỗi này trong phần mềm.
For now, we have to accept this bug in the software.
4. Using trên for a means of support because English says “live on.” Use bằng for the resource or occupation and nhờ for dependence.
❌ Anh ấy sống trên tiền trợ cấp.
Unnatural transfer from English ‘live on benefits.’
✅ Anh ấy sống bằng tiền trợ cấp.
He lives on benefit payments.
Key Takeaways
- Còn sống describes being alive; sống sót presents survival as an outcome.
- Use sống ở for residence, sống với/cùng for a shared household, and sống bằng/nhờ for material support.
- Aspect and duration expressions locate the situation; sống itself never changes form.
- Learn collocations and complement frames, because English live does not determine Vietnamese syntax.
