Vietnamese học brings together two meanings that English often separates: engaging in study and acquiring knowledge or skill. Học tiếng Việt can describe the ongoing activity “study Vietnamese,” while học được cách sửa máy highlights what someone managed to learn. Vietnamese expresses that difference through complements, aspect, and result words rather than through two separate basic verbs.
The unchanged form học also appears in educational frames, source phrases, imitation, and productive compounds. A useful reference therefore maps học gì, học ở đâu, học với/từ ai, học cách làm gì, and học được gì instead of offering nonexistent conjugations. Reading and interpreting with đọc remain for the dedicated đọc page.
Construction map
| Frame | Function | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| học + subject/language/skill | study or learn something | học toán, học tiếng Việt |
| học + predicate / học cách + predicate | learn to do / learn how | học nấu ăn, học cách từ chối |
| học + ở/tại + institution | study at a place | học ở trường y |
| học + với + teacher | study under/with someone | học với cô Lan |
| học + từ + source | learn from experience or person | học từ sai lầm |
| học theo + model | imitate or follow a model | học theo cách của chị |
| học được + content/skill | successfully acquire | học được nhiều điều |
Subject matter, activity, and acquired result
The direct complement after học commonly names a school subject, language, skill, lesson, or body of material. Học toán, học luật, and học đàn may describe a course or a sustained learning activity. Học bài usually means study or review one's lesson/homework, not “learn a lesson” in the moral English sense.
Em gái tôi đang học kiến trúc ở Đà Nẵng.
My younger sister is studying architecture in Đà Nẵng.
Tối nay tôi phải học bài nên không đi xem phim được.
I have to study tonight, so I cannot go to the movies.
Bare học does not guarantee mastery. Đã học means that the study occurred; it may describe prior exposure. Add được when the focus is what was successfully acquired, and biết when describing established know-how. Add xong when a bounded lesson, assignment, or program has been finished.
Tôi đã học tiếng Nhật hai năm nhưng vẫn nói chưa trôi chảy.
I studied Japanese for two years, but I still do not speak it fluently.
Sau khóa tập huấn, tôi học được cách sơ cứu cơ bản.
After the training course, I learned how to provide basic first aid.
Learning an action: bare predicate or học cách
Học + predicate is compact and common with recognizable skills: học bơi, học lái xe, học nấu ăn, học viết. Học cách + predicate explicitly means learn the method or develop the ability to handle something. It is especially useful with abstract, interpersonal, or complex behavior.
Con bé đang học đi xe đạp nên bố luôn chạy bên cạnh.
The little girl is learning to ride a bicycle, so her father always runs beside her.
Làm quản lý cũng là học cách lắng nghe người khác.
Being a manager also means learning how to listen to other people.
Purpose takes để: học để thi, học để làm bác sĩ, học để hiểu. Do not use để as an English infinitive marker inside the simple skill frame. Học làm + role/job can mean train or learn to be that role, but học để trở thành... is often clearer in formal prose.
Anh ấy học thêm buổi tối để thi chứng chỉ kế toán.
He takes extra evening classes in order to sit the accounting certification exam.
Place, program, and level
Use học ở + institution/place in ordinary speech. Học tại is common in biographies and institutional writing (formal). Programs and levels often behave like direct complements: học đại học, học cao học, học lớp mười, học ngành kinh tế. Asking Bạn học ngành gì? requests a field of study; Bạn học trường nào? is widespread conversationally, while Bạn học ở trường nào? makes the location relation explicit and is the safest general frame.
Chị học ngành công nghệ thực phẩm hay công nghệ sinh học?
Do you study food technology or biotechnology?
Theo hồ sơ, bà từng theo học tại Đại học Huế.
According to the record, she once studied at Huế University. (formal)
Đi học means go to school/class or be engaged in schooling. Theo học means pursue a course or study under an institution/person (formal/neutral). Học hành refers broadly to one's studies and often appears when discussing diligence or educational progress. Học tập is common in institutional, political, and school language (formal) but can also be neutral in compounds such as kết quả học tập “academic results.”
Dạo này việc học hành của cháu thế nào?
How have the child's studies been lately?
Teachers, models, and sources
Use học với + teacher for taking lessons with someone. Học từ + person/experience/source foregrounds what provides the insight. Học hỏi means actively learn from others or seek knowledge, often with ở/từ; it presents an open, receptive attitude. Học theo + model means imitate or follow a method and can be approving or critical.
Tôi học đàn tranh với một nghệ nhân ở Huế.
I study the đàn tranh with an artisan in Huế.
Nhóm đã học được nhiều điều từ lần thất bại đầu tiên.
The team learned a great deal from its first failure.
Đừng học theo thói quen làm việc qua loa của anh ấy.
Do not copy his habit of working carelessly.
Direct học ai is possible in certain established or contrastive uses meaning imitate someone, but English learn from someone should not automatically become học ai. Học từ ai, học hỏi ở ai, or học với ai selects source, receptive learning, or teacher respectively.
Aspect, duration, repetition, and completion
Đang học presents an activity or current enrollment. Đã học locates prior study; từng học marks experience; mới học can mean only recently began or have only learned a limited amount. Chưa học says expected study has not occurred. Học lại means study again, repeat a course, or relearn; context distinguishes them.
Tôi mới học tiếng Việt được ba tháng nên vẫn chưa nghe hiểu được nhiều.
I have only been learning Vietnamese for three months, so I still cannot understand much when listening.
Vì chưa đạt yêu cầu, cậu ấy phải học lại môn thống kê.
Because he did not meet the requirements, he has to repeat the statistics course.
Học thuộc means memorize until one can reproduce the material. Học thuộc lòng makes rote memorization explicit. Ôn means review, particularly for an exam; English study for an exam is therefore often ôn thi or học để thi, not a prepositional copy of for.
Cô giáo không bắt học sinh học thuộc lòng cả đoạn văn.
The teacher does not require the students to memorize the entire passage.
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi học tiếng Việt mỗi tối. | I study Vietnamese every evening. |
| negative | Tôi không học ngành luật. | I do not study law. |
| question | Bạn đang học với ai? | Who are you studying with? |
| aspect-marked | Tôi đã học xong bài này. | I have finished studying this lesson. |
| idiomatic collocation | Cô ấy rất chịu khó học hỏi. | She is very diligent about learning from others. |
One learner, several relationships
— Cậu học tiếng Việt ở đâu? — Tớ học với cô Hương, nhưng cũng học được nhiều cách nói từ đồng nghiệp. — Cậu học để thi à? — Không, tớ học để nói chuyện với gia đình vợ.
— Where do you study Vietnamese? — I study with Ms. Hương, but I also learn many expressions from my colleagues. — Are you studying for an exam? — No, I'm learning so I can talk with my wife's family.
Ở đâu asks about the learning setting, với cô Hương identifies the teacher, học được...từ identifies acquired content and its source, and để supplies the purpose. English can attach study/learn to these relations differently; Vietnamese makes each one overt through its construction.
Common Mistakes
1. Assuming đã học entails mastery. It establishes prior study, not successful command.
❌ Tôi đã học tiếng Việt nên bây giờ tôi biết hết tiếng Việt.
Faulty inference — having studied Vietnamese does not mean knowing all of it.
✅ Tôi đã học tiếng Việt hai năm nhưng vẫn còn nhiều điều phải học.
I have studied Vietnamese for two years, but I still have much to learn.
2. Translating “learn from him” as a bare object. Mark whether he is the source, teacher, or model.
❌ Tôi học anh ấy rất nhiều.
Unclear and unnatural for neutral English ‘I learned a lot from him.’
✅ Tôi học được rất nhiều từ anh ấy.
I learned a great deal from him.
3. Copying English “study for the exam” with cho. Use ôn thi or a purpose clause.
❌ Tối nay tôi học cho kỳ thi.
Unnatural transfer of English ‘for.’
✅ Tối nay tôi ôn thi.
Tonight I am studying for the exam.
4. Inserting để before a skill as though it meant infinitival “to.” Bare học + skill predicate is the ordinary frame.
❌ Em đang học để bơi.
Wrong for ‘She is learning to swim’ — để introduces purpose, not an infinitive.
✅ Em đang học bơi.
She is learning to swim.
