Gửi: Send, Deposit, and Convey

Vietnamese gửi covers more than English “send.” It can dispatch a message or object through a channel, leave property or a person in someone’s care, deposit money, park a vehicle in a managed place, and convey regards. Across these uses, the subject transfers something into a route, service, or another participant’s temporary custody without necessarily accompanying it.

The useful contrast is with mang, where the subject carries the object, and đưa, where a directed handing or escort event is foregrounded. Gửi instead profiles entrusting or dispatching. The following page treats giữ “keep/hold”, the complementary perspective of maintaining custody.

The main frames

FrameMeaningExample
gửi + item + cho + personsend something to someonegửi ảnh cho mẹ
gửi + item + đến + endpointdispatch to a place/institutiongửi hồ sơ đến trường
gửi + item/person + ở/cho + custodianleave in someone’s caregửi hành lý ở quầy
gửi + money/vehicledeposit or leave in managed custodygửi tiền, gửi xe
gửi + lời + expressionconvey words, wishes, or regardsgửi lời cảm ơn

No conjugated forms distinguish send, sent, and has sent. Vietnamese retains gửi and uses aspect markers, time phrases, directionals, and construction choice to locate the event and its endpoint.

Sending an object, file, or message

For a person as recipient, the safest neutral frame is gửi + object + cho + recipient. The object may be physical or digital. In casual conversation, especially with a pronoun, cho can be omitted—gửi mình địa chỉ nhé—but the full frame makes roles unmistakable.

Bạn gửi địa chỉ nhà hàng cho tôi qua tin nhắn nhé.

Send me the restaurant’s address by text message.

I’ve just sent the signed contract to the accounting department.

For a geographic or institutional endpoint, đến is common: gửi bưu kiện đến Huế, gửi đơn đến cơ quan chức năng. Cho highlights the recipient who gets or benefits from the item; đến highlights the endpoint reached. With an organization either can sometimes occur, but the perspective is not identical.

The publisher has sent books to libraries in the highlands.

The application must be sent to the office before June 30. (formal)

A channel can be introduced with qua: qua email, qua bưu điện, qua ứng dụng. Do not treat qua as part of the verb; it specifies how the dispatched item travels.

The recruiter will send the result by email within three days.

Leaving something in another’s care

Gửi also means “leave with,” “entrust,” or “check.” The receiving participant or service becomes a temporary custodian rather than the final owner. This frame explains several everyday expressions that English distributes among unrelated verbs.

Chúng tôi gửi hành lý ở khách sạn rồi đi ăn trưa.

We left our luggage at the hotel and then went to lunch.

This weekend they’re leaving the child with the grandparents to look after.

Gửi xe means leave or park a vehicle in a designated place, typically one where someone or a system manages it. Chỗ gửi xe is a parking area; vé gửi xe is a parking ticket. This is not the same as physically “sending” the vehicle somewhere.

Anh gửi xe dưới tầng hầm rồi lên sảnh gặp em nhé.

Park in the basement and then come up to meet me in the lobby.

With people, gửi con or gửi cháu can be completely neutral when the care arrangement is clear, but it frames the caregiver as entrusted with responsibility. In sensitive contexts, say explicitly gửi bé cho ông bà trông or nhờ ông bà trông bé rather than relying on a bare phrase.

Depositing money and valuables

At a bank, gửi tiền can mean deposit money. A complement states the account, institution, or product: gửi tiền vào tài khoản, gửi tiền ở ngân hàng, gửi tiết kiệm “place money in savings.” Context distinguishes this from sending money to a person.

I’d like to deposit this money into a savings account.

Mỗi tháng cô ấy gửi tiết kiệm một phần tiền lương.

Every month she puts part of her salary into savings.

To transfer money to a person, modern conversation often uses chuyển tiền cho or chuyển khoản cho. Gửi tiền cho mẹ is also natural and can mean send/remit money to one’s mother; it does not by itself specify cash, bank transfer, or another channel.

💡
The object after gửi does not tell you the whole event. Gửi tiền vào tài khoản is a deposit; gửi tiền cho mẹ is a remittance. Learn the complement together with the verb.

Conveying words, wishes, and feelings

The highly productive expression gửi lời + speech-act noun means “send/convey ...”: gửi lời cảm ơn “express thanks,” gửi lời xin lỗi “convey an apology,” gửi lời chúc mừng “send congratulations,” and gửi lời hỏi thăm “send one’s regards.” A recipient follows đến or tới, especially in formal messages, or cho in ordinary speech.

Please give my regards to your uncle and the whole family.

Ban tổ chức xin gửi lời cảm ơn chân thành tới tất cả tình nguyện viên.

The organizers would like to express their sincere thanks to all volunteers. (formal)

Gửi gắm is a related compound meaning entrust something important—hopes, confidence, a responsibility, or a loved one—to another. It is more emotionally weighted than plain gửi and is common in careful or literary prose.

Local residents place many hopes in the new project. (formal)

Directionals, repetition, and aspect

Common combinations include gửi đi “send off,” gửi về “send back/home,” gửi lại “send back/resend,” and gửi kèm “send attached/enclosed.” Their meanings come from the added element: lại often signals return or repetition, while kèm adds an accompanying item.

Tệp bị lỗi nên tôi sẽ gửi lại ngay.

The file was corrupted, so I’ll resend it right away.

I’m attaching the invoice and handover record to this email. (formal/neutral)

Đang gửi can describe a transfer in progress, particularly a file upload or an act being performed. Đã gửi...rồi marks completed dispatch; it does not guarantee receipt unless context says so. Chưa nhận được “have not received” can therefore coexist with đã gửi.

Máy đang gửi dữ liệu lên máy chủ; đừng tắt nguồn.

The device is sending data to the server; don’t turn off the power.

I sent the letter last week, but she still hasn’t received it.

💡
Keep dispatch and receipt separate. Đã gửi commits the speaker only to the sending event; add đã nhận được if successful receipt is what matters.

Negation is không gửi; chưa gửi marks an expected dispatch not yet completed.

The frame changes the meaning

— Where can I leave my suitcase? — Check it at the counter on the left. As for the electronic ticket, send it to me through the app.

The first gửi transfers the suitcase into temporary custody. The second dispatches digital information to a recipient. The same predicate is natural because both events put something into a channel or another party’s care; the complements determine the practical interpretation.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting the recipient marker in a careful neutral sentence. Direct-pronoun patterns occur conversationally, but cho is the dependable frame for learners.

Unnatural in careful neutral Vietnamese — the full noun recipient is not clearly marked.

I sent an important email to Mai.

2. Using a location phrase with ở when the place is the destination. Ở marks the place of custody; đến marks where an item is dispatched.

❌ Tôi gửi bưu kiện ở Đà Nẵng.

Wrong for ‘I send the parcel to Da Nang’ — this says the sending or custody is in Da Nang.

✅ Tôi gửi bưu kiện đến Đà Nẵng.

I send the parcel to Da Nang.

3. Translating “send money to an account” without the goal marker. A deposit needs a destination such as vào tài khoản.

❌ Tôi gửi tài khoản năm triệu đồng.

Incorrect — tài khoản is wrongly positioned as though it were the item being sent.

✅ Tôi gửi năm triệu đồng vào tài khoản tiết kiệm.

I deposit five million dong into the savings account.

4. Using mang when the sender does not accompany the item. Physical or digital dispatch is gửi; mang means carry.

❌ Sáng nay tôi mang đơn qua bưu điện đến trường.

Incorrect for mailing the application — mang only describes carrying it to the post office, not postal dispatch to the school.

✅ Sáng nay tôi gửi đơn đến trường qua bưu điện.

This morning I mailed the application to the school.

Key Takeaways

  • Use cho for a recipient, đến for an endpoint, qua for a channel, and vào for a deposit destination.
  • Everyday custody uses include gửi xe, gửi hành lý, and gửi bé cho người thân trông.
  • Learn gửi lời..., gửi lại, gửi kèm, and gửi tiết kiệm as complete collocations.
