Vietnamese giữ presents a subject as maintaining control, position, possession, or a desired condition. It can mean “hold” a physical object, “keep” a document, “save” a seat, “maintain” silence, “preserve” a secret, or “honor” one’s word. The common logic is resistance to change: the subject prevents something from leaving, falling, changing, or being lost.
English keep also appears in meanings that do not involve preservation, such as “keep talking” or “keep a shop.” Vietnamese does not automatically use giữ in those frames. Learn the constructions below rather than projecting every English use onto one invariant verb. The placement and permissive predicate để is treated separately on the next page.
The construction map
| Frame | Core meaning | Common combination |
|---|---|---|
| giữ + object/person | hold, retain, guard | giữ túi, giữ trẻ |
| giữ lại + object | keep back, retain | giữ lại biên lai |
| giữ + state noun/adjective | maintain one’s own state | giữ im lặng, giữ bình tĩnh |
| giữ + cho + entity + state | keep something in a condition | giữ cho phòng luôn sạch |
| giữ + fixed abstract noun | preserve or honor | giữ bí mật, giữ lời |
This map also explains the relationship between gửi and giữ. One person may gửi hành lý “leave luggage in custody,” while another giữ hành lý “keeps/looks after the luggage.” The same object is viewed from opposite sides of the custody transfer.
Physical holding, restraint, and custody
In its concrete use, giữ means exerting enough control for something to remain in one’s hand, position, or custody. Duration may be brief or extended; context supplies it.
Bạn giữ hộ tôi chiếc túi này một lát nhé.
Could you hold this bag for me for a moment?
Gió mạnh quá, em giữ cửa để chị mang đồ vào.
The wind is so strong; hold the door while I carry the things inside.
Giữ hộ asks someone to hold or look after something as a favor. Giữ trẻ means mind or babysit children, not physically restrain them. Giữ nhà can mean stay behind and watch the house. The object and situation determine whether English chooses hold, guard, mind, or keep.
Tối nay bà ngoại giữ bé giúp vợ chồng tôi.
Grandma is looking after the baby for us tonight.
With a person as object, giữ can also mean detain, restrain, or prevent departure. This can be neutral in giữ ai ở lại ăn cơm “keep someone for dinner,” but institutional tạm giữ means “temporarily detain” (formal/legal) and should not be treated as casual “keep.”
Công an tạm giữ chiếc xe để phục vụ điều tra.
The police temporarily detained the vehicle for the investigation. (formal/legal)
Retaining, reserving, and not giving something up
When the issue is continued possession, giữ means retain or keep. Giữ lại makes non-release or retention explicit; lại can contrast keeping with returning, discarding, or passing on.
Bạn giữ lại hóa đơn phòng khi cần đổi hàng.
Keep the receipt in case you need to exchange the item.
Tôi chỉ lấy một bản; phần còn lại bạn cứ giữ.
I’ll only take one copy; you can keep the rest.
Reservation uses include giữ chỗ “reserve/save a place,” giữ phòng “hold a room,” and giữ vé “retain/hold tickets.” A service provider can giữ chỗ cho khách; a friend can giữ chỗ cho bạn at a table.
Cậu đến trước thì giữ chỗ cho mình gần cửa sổ nhé.
If you arrive first, save me a seat near the window.
In commercial contexts, giữ hàng can mean reserve stock for a customer. It does not itself mean ownership changes; it means the item remains unavailable to others for a period.
Maintaining a condition
Giữ + state expression says that the subject maintains that state: giữ im lặng “remain silent,” giữ bình tĩnh “stay calm,” giữ ấm “keep warm,” and giữ tỉnh táo “stay alert.” These combinations are neutral and common.
Dù rất lo, chị ấy vẫn giữ bình tĩnh để giải thích tình hình.
Although she was very worried, she stayed calm in order to explain the situation.
Uống đủ nước và nghỉ thường xuyên để giữ tỉnh táo khi lái xe.
Drink enough water and rest regularly to stay alert while driving.
To maintain another entity in a state, Vietnamese often uses giữ cho + entity + state. Cho introduces the entity benefiting from or affected by the maintained condition. In compact instructions, giữ + object + adjective also occurs, but giữ cho is especially clear with a full clause.
Mở hé cửa sổ để giữ cho căn phòng luôn thoáng.
Leave the window slightly open to keep the room well ventilated.
Hộp kín giúp giữ thực phẩm tươi lâu hơn.
An airtight container helps keep food fresh longer.
Do not confuse maintained state with passive placement. Để cửa mở means leave the door open, perhaps by not closing it. Giữ cửa mở means actively hold or keep it open against a tendency to close. The choice changes how much control and effort the subject contributes.
Secrets, promises, contact, and other fixed collocations
Abstract giữ remains tied to preservation. Giữ bí mật protects information from disclosure; giữ lời honors one’s word; giữ lời hứa keeps a promise; giữ liên lạc maintains contact; giữ khoảng cách maintains distance; and giữ gìn means preserve or take good care of.
Chuyện này chỉ có ba người biết; bạn nhớ giữ bí mật nhé.
Only three people know about this; remember to keep it secret.
Anh ấy đã hứa sẽ quay lại và cuối cùng cũng giữ lời.
He promised he would return, and in the end he kept his word.
Chuyển nhà rồi mình vẫn giữ liên lạc nhé.
Let’s keep in touch even after you move.
Giữ gìn sức khỏe “take care of your health” is common in farewells and advice. Bare giữ sức khỏe also occurs, but giữ gìn sounds more idiomatic and caring in the conventional wish. Bảo tồn and bảo vệ may be more precise for institutional conservation and protection.
Đi đường cẩn thận và nhớ giữ gìn sức khỏe.
Travel safely, and remember to take care of yourself.
Formal combinations include giữ chức vụ “hold a position,” giữ vai trò “play/hold a role,” and giữ nguyên “keep unchanged.” These do not mean literal gripping, but they preserve the idea of continued status.
Bà giữ chức vụ giám đốc trong hơn mười năm.
She held the position of director for more than ten years. (formal/neutral)
Aspect, negation, and questions
Because giữ can denote either an activity or a maintained state, aspect depends on the frame. Đang giữ em bé can mean “is holding the baby” or “is looking after the child.” Đã giữ chỗ presents the reservation as secured. Vẫn giữ emphasizes persistence, and giữ được says successful retention was achieved.
Tôi đang giữ điện thoại của chị Lan; chị ấy để quên trên bàn.
I’m holding on to Lan’s phone; she left it on the table.
May mà chúng tôi vẫn giữ được toàn bộ dữ liệu cũ.
Fortunately, we managed to preserve all the old data.
Negation is không giữ; không giữ được means failure or inability to retain. Questions ask ai giữ, giữ ở đâu, giữ bao lâu, or use có...không.
Khách sạn có thể giữ hành lý đến chiều không?
Can the hotel keep our luggage until the afternoon?
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi giữ chìa khóa dự phòng. | I keep the spare key. |
| negative | Tôi không giữ bản gốc. | I do not keep the original. |
| question | Ai đang giữ vé? | Who has the tickets? |
| aspect-marked | Tôi đã giữ chỗ cho bốn người rồi. | I have reserved seats for four people. |
| idiomatic collocation | Anh ấy luôn giữ lời. | He always keeps his word. |
A custody exchange
— Mình gửi ba lô ở quầy được không? — Được. Bên tôi giữ đến chín giờ tối. Bạn giữ vé này để lát nữa nhận lại nhé.
— Can I leave my backpack at the counter? — Yes. We’ll keep it until nine tonight. Keep this ticket so you can collect it later.
The customer gửi the backpack, initiating temporary custody. The service giữ it, maintaining custody. The customer also giữ the ticket, retaining possession for a later purpose. English uses leave, keep, and hold on to; Vietnamese organizes all three perspectives through the transfer and control frames.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating English “keep doing” with giữ + verb. Repeated or continued action normally uses cứ, tiếp tục, or vẫn, not physical/state-preserving giữ.
❌ Anh ấy giữ nói dù cuộc họp đã kết thúc.
Incorrect calque of ‘He kept talking.’
✅ Anh ấy vẫn tiếp tục nói dù cuộc họp đã kết thúc.
He kept talking even though the meeting had ended.
2. Using giữ for leaving an object in a location without a keeper. Để expresses placing or leaving it there.
❌ Tôi giữ chìa khóa trên bàn rồi đi ra ngoài.
Wrong for simple placement — this suggests maintaining control of the key while it is on the table.
✅ Tôi để chìa khóa trên bàn rồi đi ra ngoài.
I left the key on the table and went out.
3. Misplacing the entity in a full giữ cho state clause. A compact pattern without cho is possible—giữ căn phòng luôn mát mẻ—but in the expanded frame the entity comes directly after giữ cho and before its condition.
❌ Máy này giúp giữ cho luôn mát mẻ căn phòng.
Incorrect word order — căn phòng must precede the condition luôn mát mẻ.
✅ Máy này giúp giữ cho căn phòng luôn mát mẻ.
This machine helps keep the room cool.
4. Treating gửi and giữ as synonyms. Gửi initiates entrustment; giữ describes continued custody.
❌ Khách sạn gửi hành lý của chúng tôi đến chiều.
Incorrect for ‘The hotel keeps our luggage until afternoon’ — the hotel is the custodian, not the sender.
✅ Khách sạn giữ hành lý của chúng tôi đến chiều.
The hotel keeps our luggage until the afternoon.
