Thousands, Millions, and Billions

Vietnamese large numbers group naturally around nghìn “thousand,” triệu “million,” and tỷ “billion.” Each scale word follows the number multiplying it, and the material after it is read as the remaining lower-value group. The system is regular, but exact reading requires attention to zero positions, positional mốt/tư/lăm, and regional nghìn/ngàn. This page focuses on large cardinal structure; the next page, Numbers with Classifiers, develops how a completed large numeral combines with count nouns.

The three scale words

ValueVietnameseExample
1,000một nghìnmột nghìn người
10,000mười nghìnmười nghìn đồng
100,000một trăm nghìnmột trăm nghìn bản
1,000,000một triệumột triệu lượt xem
1,000,000,000một tỷmột tỷ đồng

Ngàn is the common (regional: Southern) counterpart of nghìn: một ngàn đồng and một nghìn đồng denote the same amount. Nghìn is the safest default in nationally edited prose; ngàn is fully natural in Southern speech and also appears in literary and lyrical usage elsewhere. The scale words triệu and tỷ do not change by region in the same way.

Thư viện có hơn mười nghìn đầu sách.

The library has more than ten thousand book titles.

Vé này chỉ có hai chục ngàn đồng.

(regional: Southern) This ticket costs only twenty thousand đồng.

Build in three-digit groups

Read from the largest scale down. Within each group, use the ordinary hundreds–tens–units pattern.

NumberVietnamese
1,200một nghìn hai trăm
12,500mười hai nghìn năm trăm
125,000một trăm hai mươi lăm nghìn
1,250,000một triệu hai trăm năm mươi nghìn
1,234,567một triệu hai trăm ba mươi tư nghìn năm trăm sáu mươi bảy

Thành phố có khoảng một triệu hai trăm năm mươi nghìn dân.

The city has about 1,250,000 inhabitants.

The scale word closes one group and opens the remainder. In một triệu hai trăm năm mươi nghìn, một triệu gives 1,000,000 and hai trăm năm mươi nghìn gives 250,000. Vietnamese does not need an overt conjunction between the groups.

💡
Work in chunks: identify tỷ, then triệu, then nghìn, and finally the last three digits. Do not translate an entire long string in one pass.

Preserve internal zeros in exact readings

When a lower group starts below one hundred, careful number reading can state the empty hundreds and tens positions so the listener knows where the digits belong.

Con số chính xác là một triệu không trăm lẻ năm nghìn.

The exact figure is 1,005,000.

Here the group after triệu is 005 thousands. Không trăm lẻ năm nghìn preserves that group explicitly. In ordinary conversation, speakers may shorten predictable zeros, but formal dictation, finance, and verification favor the full structure.

Ngân sách tăng từ một tỷ không trăm lẻ năm triệu lên một tỷ mười triệu đồng.

The budget increased from 1.005 billion to 1.01 billion đồng.

Long numbers place a high burden on listeners. In (formal) presentations, speakers often show the digits visually, pause at scale boundaries, or repeat the figure. That is good communication, not grammatical redundancy.

The same rule from the hundreds applies inside each group: after lẻ/linh, use basic năm, as in không trăm lẻ năm. After a pronounced tens expression, use lăm, as in hai mươi lăm nghìn.

Positional variants continue inside large numbers

Scale words do not cancel the rules for mốt, tư, and lăm.

Công ty có hai mươi mốt nghìn khách hàng thường xuyên.

The company has twenty-one thousand regular customers.

Dự án cần ba mươi tư triệu đồng cho giai đoạn đầu.

The project needs 34 million đồng for the first phase.

Căn hộ có giá một tỷ hai trăm mười lăm triệu đồng.

The apartment costs 1.215 billion đồng.

Build hai mươi mốt, ba mươi tư, or mười lăm first, then attach nghìn/triệu/tỷ. The scale word is not a classifier inserted inside the cardinal.

Money, decimals, and approximate large values

Vietnamese puts the currency unit after the full amount: một triệu đồng, hai tỷ đồng. A classifier such as cái is not used before đồng.

Tổng chi phí là hai triệu năm trăm nghìn đồng.

The total cost is 2,500,000 đồng.

In everyday speech, rưỡi can mean “and a half” after a scale expression: hai triệu rưỡi is 2.5 million. The fuller decimal reading is hai phẩy năm triệu, useful when precision or parallel data matter.

Lương thử việc là tám triệu rưỡi một tháng.

(informal) The probationary salary is 8.5 million đồng per month.

Dân số tăng từ hai phẩy bốn triệu lên hai phẩy năm triệu người.

(formal) The population increased from 2.4 million to 2.5 million people.

The written decimal convention varies by document and international context, so a careful speaker says phẩy aloud and states the unit. The dedicated decimals page handles digit-by-digit readings and percentages.

Dates, years, time, and codes use different reading strategies

A calendar year may be read as a cardinal: năm hai nghìn không trăm hai mươi sáu is a fully explicit “the year 2026,” while năm hai nghìn hai mươi sáu is a natural shorter form. This is not the same task as reading a phone number, room code, or bank code, where digits may be pronounced separately.

Kế hoạch này áp dụng từ năm hai nghìn hai mươi sáu.

This plan applies from the year 2026.

Dates still place day before month: ngày 7 tháng 10 năm 2026. Clock time uses giờ, as in tám giờ rưỡi. Duration uses a unit after the cardinal, as in hai nghìn giờ. The large-number system provides the cardinal; the surrounding noun decides whether it denotes a year, amount, duration, or count.

A contrast map across the number system

ExpressionKey grammar
hai mươi mốtmốt is positional one after mươi
ba mươi tưtư is a common positional four
mười lămlăm is positional five after tens
thứ haithứ creates an ordinal/weekday frame
ngày 7 tháng 10day precedes month
tám giờ rưỡirưỡi adds half of the hour unit
hai mươi mốt nghìna completed cardinal multiplies the thousand scale
💡
The words around a number matter as much as its digits. Thứ, ngày, tháng, giờ, rưỡi, nghìn, triệu, and tỷ tell the listener which numerical construction is active.

A natural apartment discussion

— Căn hộ này giá bao nhiêu? — Một tỷ hai trăm năm mươi triệu đồng. — Tôi nghe là một tỷ hai trăm mười lăm triệu. — Không, 1.250.000.000 đồng: hai trăm năm mươi triệu, không phải hai trăm mười lăm triệu. — Vậy tiền đặt cọc là bao nhiêu? — Một trăm hai mươi lăm triệu đồng.

— How much is this apartment? — 1.25 billion đồng. — I heard 1.215 billion. — No, 1,250,000,000 đồng: two hundred fifty million, not two hundred fifteen million. — Then how much is the deposit? — 125 million đồng.

The dialogue shows why listeners must locate mươi and lăm inside the million group. A visually displayed number plus a repeated spoken group prevents an expensive misunderstanding.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding English plural morphology to a scale word

❌ hai tỷs đồng

Incorrect: Vietnamese tỷ does not take English plural -s after a number.

✅ hai tỷ đồng

two billion đồng

Vietnamese has the dedicated scale word tỷ for 10⁹, and the scale word remains unchanged after every multiplier.

2. Inserting a general classifier before currency

❌ hai triệu cái đồng

Incorrect: đồng is a currency unit and does not take cái in this amount.

✅ hai triệu đồng

two million đồng

The complete amount directly precedes the currency unit.

3. Losing a zero group in an exact reading

❌ một triệu năm mươi nghìn

This means 1,050,000, not the intended 1,005,000.

✅ một triệu không trăm lẻ năm nghìn

1,005,000 in an explicit exact reading

Năm mươi nghìn is fifty thousand; không trăm lẻ năm nghìn is five thousand inside a padded three-digit group.

4. Ignoring the lăm alternation before a scale word

❌ hai mươi năm triệu đồng

Incorrect for 25 million đồng; năm after tens suggests a different parse.

✅ hai mươi lăm triệu đồng

twenty-five million đồng

Build the lower cardinal correctly before attaching triệu.

5. Copying American date order into a large-year expression

❌ Tháng 10 ngày 7 năm hai nghìn hai mươi sáu

English-driven order in a neutral full Vietnamese date.

✅ Ngày 7 tháng 10 năm hai nghìn hai mươi sáu

October 7, 2026

Large year numbers do not change the Vietnamese day–month–year frame.

Key Takeaways

  • Use nghìn “thousand,” triệu “million,” and tỷ “billion,” reading from the largest group downward.
  • Ngàn is a natural regional counterpart of nghìn, especially in Southern speech.
  • Preserve internal zero positions in formal exact readings; lẻ/linh and không trăm can keep a three-digit group unambiguous.
  • Positional mốt, tư, and lăm apply inside each group before a scale word.
  • Add currencies, classifiers, date units, or time units only after the large cardinal has been built.
