Dates, Weekdays, Months, and Years

Vietnamese calendar expressions grow from smaller labeled units to larger ones: ngày 7 tháng 10 năm 2026 means “7 October 2026.” The unit words ngày “day,” tháng “month,” and năm “year” tell the listener what each number represents, while weekday names use thứ. The number system is regular, but natural calendar speech still depends on positional forms such as mốt, tư, lăm and on Vietnamese day–month ordering.

This page covers dates, weekdays, months, and years. It leaves exact clock readings such as tám giờ rưỡi to Clock Time and Parts of the Hour.

The calendar frame

A maximally explicit date follows this order:

weekday + ngày + day + tháng + month + năm + year

Not every part must be present. Use only what the context needs, but keep the surviving units in the same relative order.

Cuộc họp được chuyển sang thứ tư, ngày 7 tháng 10.

The meeting has been moved to Wednesday, 7 October.

Hợp đồng có hiệu lực từ ngày mười lăm tháng mười năm hai nghìn không trăm hai mươi sáu.

The contract takes effect on 15 October 2026. (formal)

In ordinary writing, dates are usually printed with digits. In careful speech—especially when confirming a booking or reading an official document—the surrounding unit words prevent ambiguity.

💡
English punctuation can hide the order of a date; Vietnamese unit words make it audible. Hear ngày as “the day slot,” tháng as “the month slot,” and năm as “the year slot.”

Weekdays: thứ plus a number

Monday through Saturday form a fixed series with thứ. Sunday is the separate word chủ nhật.

thứ sáuFridaysixth
thứ bảySaturdayseventh

Thứ hai tôi làm ở nhà, còn thứ ba tôi lên văn phòng.

On Monday I work from home, and on Tuesday I go into the office.

Chủ nhật này cả nhà về quê ăn giỗ.

This Sunday the whole family is going back to the hometown for a death-anniversary meal.

Because thứ hai can also mean “second,” syntax and context matter. Người thứ hai is “the second person,” while sentence-initial Thứ hai, tôi... normally names Monday. Weekday names are established expressions, not an invitation to renumber the week according to an English calendar.

Days and months use cardinals

After ngày and tháng, use cardinal numbers. Vietnamese has no required equivalent of English October seventh: the ordinary form is structurally “day seven, month ten.”

Sinh nhật chị ấy là ngày hai mươi mốt tháng tư.

Her birthday is 21 April.

Trường nghỉ từ ngày mười lăm tháng sáu đến hết tháng bảy.

The school is closed from 15 June through the end of July.

Compound day numbers keep their natural positional forms: ngày hai mươi mốt “the 21st” and ngày hai mươi lăm “the 25th.” In month names, the standalone month number remains basic: tháng tư is April, but tháng bốn is also widely used. Tháng tư is especially conventional; usage varies somewhat by region and speaker. Do not replace every standalone bốn with tư.

The lunar calendar also preserves traditional names. Tháng giêng is the first lunar month, and tháng chạp is the twelfth lunar month. These do not simply replace tháng một and tháng mười hai in every Gregorian date.

Tết thường rơi vào tháng giêng âm lịch.

Tết normally falls in the first lunar month.

Reading years

Years normally follow năm and are read as cardinal numbers. A careful full reading of 2026 is hai nghìn không trăm hai mươi sáu. In conversation, hai nghìn hai mươi sáu is also common when no misunderstanding is likely. Nghìn is the broad neutral word for “thousand”; ngàn is common (regional: Southern).

Tôi bắt đầu học tiếng Việt vào năm hai nghìn không trăm hai mươi mốt.

I began studying Vietnamese in 2021.

Dự án kéo dài từ năm một nghìn chín trăm chín mươi lăm đến năm hai nghìn linh năm.

The project ran from 1995 to 2005. (Northern reading)

In the second year, linh bridges the place-value gap before the final five in a common (regional: Northern) reading. A common (regional: Southern) counterpart is hai ngàn lẻ năm, with both Southern-leaning ngàn and lẻ. Formal documents may favor a fully explicit reading such as hai nghìn không trăm linh năm. Large calendar and budget figures use the same words nghìn, triệu, and tỷ, but a date does not take an object classifier: the unit word năm already identifies the calendrical unit.

One system, six different frames

FormFunctionNaturalness cue
hai mươi mốtcardinal 21final one becomes mốt
ba mươi tưcardinal 34tư is common after mươi
mười lămcardinal 15final five becomes lăm
thứ haiMonday or secondthứ supplies weekday/ordinal framing
ngày 7 tháng 107 Octoberday precedes month
tám giờ rưỡi8:30clock expression; covered separately

The digits themselves are only part of the message. A classifier packages an object in hai mươi mốt quyển sách “twenty-one books,” whereas calendar unit words package time in ngày hai mươi mốt and năm hai nghìn.... Literal digit reading misses both the frame and the positional variants.

A date that changes the plan

Mai: Vé ghi ngày 7 tháng 10, tức là thứ tư tuần sau, đúng không? Nam: Không, ngày 7 tháng 10 là thứ tư, nhưng vé của mình ghi ngày 10 tháng 7. Mai: May mà kiểm tra lại; tháng 7 thì đã qua rồi.

Mai: The ticket says 7 October, meaning next Wednesday, right? Nam: No, 7 October is Wednesday, but our ticket says 10 July. Mai: Good thing we checked again; July has already passed.

The contrast between ngày 7 tháng 10 and ngày 10 tháng 7 changes the trip completely. Vietnamese normally reads the first numeral as the day, so importing American month–day expectations creates a real-world error, not merely an accent.

Common Mistakes

1. Importing American month–day order

❌ Cuộc hẹn là tháng mười ngày bảy.

Unnatural as the neutral Vietnamese rendering of October 7; it copies English month–day order.

✅ Cuộc hẹn là ngày 7 tháng 10.

The appointment is on 7 October.

The repair labels the day first and the month second.

2. Reading compound day numbers with basic digits

❌ Hạn cuối là ngày hai mươi một tháng tư.

Incorrect in the neutral whole-number reading: final one after mươi must be mốt.

✅ Hạn cuối là ngày hai mươi mốt tháng tư.

The deadline is 21 April.

The same positional principle gives ba mươi tư and mười lăm.

3. Treating calendar units like ordinary object nouns

❌ Tôi ở đây ba cái tháng.

Incorrect: tháng is a time unit and does not take the general classifier cái.

✅ Tôi ở đây ba tháng.

I am here for three months.

Classifiers are crucial with ordinary counted objects, but ngày, tháng, and năm already function as units.

4. Translating weekday numbers mechanically

❌ Tôi nghỉ vào thứ một.

Incorrect for Sunday or Monday; Vietnamese has no weekday named thứ một.

✅ Tôi nghỉ vào chủ nhật.

I take Sunday off.

Learn the weekday series as fixed calendar vocabulary: thứ hai through thứ bảy, plus chủ nhật.

Key Takeaways

  • Order a full date as weekday–ngày–tháng–năm.
  • Learn thứ hai through thứ bảy as weekdays; Sunday is chủ nhật.
  • Keep mốt, tư, and lăm where the compound cardinal requires them.
  • Treat ngày, tháng, and năm as calendar units, not object nouns needing cái.
  • Read the visible units, not an assumed American date format.
