Clock Time and Parts of the Hour

Vietnamese clock expressions name units in descending order: tám giờ mười lăm phút is 8:15, literally “eight hour fifteen minutes.” Minutes can be shortened when the context is clear, and rưỡi supplies “half”: tám giờ rưỡi. What makes these forms natural is not difficult arithmetic but the placement of units, positional number forms, and day-part labels.

This page covers points on the clock and parts of the hour. Duration—how long something lasts—belongs on Duration, Frequency, and Age.

Asking and answering the time

Ask Mấy giờ rồi? “What time is it?” for the current time. Ask Mấy giờ...? or Lúc mấy giờ...? when asking when an event occurs.

Mấy giờ rồi? — Tám giờ mười lăm rồi.

What time is it? — It's 8:15 already.

Cuộc họp bắt đầu lúc mấy giờ? — Lúc chín giờ sáng.

What time does the meeting start? — At nine in the morning.

The basic affirmative frame is (lúc) + hour + giờ + minute (+ phút). Lúc marks the time of an event; it is not normally needed in a bare answer to “What time is it?”

💡
Vietnamese puts rưỡi after the unit: tám giờ rưỡi, một tiếng rưỡi. Do not copy the English order “half past eight.”

Minutes after the hour

Minutes are ordinary compound cardinals, so their positional forms remain active: 21 is hai mươi mốt, 34 is commonly ba mươi tư, and 15 is mười lăm.

Xe buýt đến lúc sáu giờ hai mươi mốt phút.

The bus arrives at 6:21.

Bản tin bắt đầu lúc mười chín giờ ba mươi tư.

The news begins at 19:34. (formal schedule style)

Chị gọi lại cho em lúc tám giờ mười lăm nhé.

Call me back at 8:15, okay? (informal)

The word phút can disappear after a minute number when everyone is already discussing clock time. Keep it when precision matters or when the number could be parsed another way. Seconds follow minutes: tám giờ mười lăm phút ba mươi giây “8:15:30.”

Rưỡi and kém

Use rưỡi after giờ for half past: tám giờ rưỡi. It is not a free-standing translation of English half. With a duration, the unit changes—một tiếng rưỡi means “an hour and a half”—which is why clock points and elapsed time must be kept distinct.

Phim bắt đầu lúc tám giờ rưỡi, mình gặp nhau lúc tám giờ nhé.

The film starts at 8:30; let's meet at eight.

Use kém to count backward from the following hour: chín giờ kém mười lăm is 8:45, literally “nine o'clock minus fifteen.” A forward reading, tám giờ bốn mươi lăm, is equally clear and often simpler for learners.

Bây giờ là chín giờ kém mười phút, mình vẫn còn đủ thời gian.

It is ten to nine now; we still have enough time.

There is no need to force an English-style “quarter” idiom. Tám giờ mười lăm and chín giờ kém mười lăm are natural. Một phần tư giờ means “a quarter of an hour” as a duration and belongs to measurement, not the default clock-reading frame.

Day parts and the 24-hour clock

Everyday speech usually combines a 12-hour reading with a day part. The label follows the clock expression.

LabelTypical meaningExample
sángmorning / a.m.bảy giờ sáng
trưaaround noonmười hai giờ trưa
chiềuafternoonba giờ chiều
tốieveningtám giờ tối
đêmlate nightmười một giờ đêm

The boundaries are social rather than mathematically fixed. A time near noon or the transition from chiều to tối may receive different labels depending on routine and context. When ambiguity would matter, give a 24-hour time.

Chuyến bay khởi hành lúc hai mươi mốt giờ mười lăm.

The flight departs at 21:15. (formal announcement/schedule)

Twenty-four-hour readings are common in timetables, transport, broadcasting, the military, and other (formal) precision contexts. Conversation more often says chín giờ mười lăm tối. Midnight can be mười hai giờ đêm in ordinary speech or không giờ in formal 24-hour notation.

Giờ, phút, and giây are measure-unit nouns, just as ngày, tháng, and năm are in calendar phrases. By contrast, nghìn, triệu, and tỷ are scale words that build larger numbers. Neither environment calls for the general object classifier cái. Classifiers return when you count physical clocks: hai cái đồng hồ “two clocks.”

Why exact wording matters

Lan: Mình gặp nhau lúc tám giờ nhé. Huy: Tám giờ sáng hay tám giờ tối? Lan: Tám giờ tối; phim bắt đầu lúc tám giờ rưỡi. Huy: Được, vậy mình sẽ đến lúc tám giờ mười lăm.

Lan: Let's meet at eight. Huy: Eight in the morning or eight at night? Lan: Eight at night; the film starts at 8:30. Huy: Okay, then I'll arrive at 8:15.

The first tám giờ is under-specified. Adding tối selects the half of the day, while rưỡi changes the minute value. Vietnamese politeness may leave information implicit when shared, but a booking or journey rewards explicit units.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying the English order of “half past”

❌ rưỡi tám giờ

Incorrect word order for 8:30; rưỡi cannot precede the clock phrase this way.

✅ tám giờ rưỡi

8:30 / half past eight

The unit comes first, then rưỡi.

2. Losing positional forms in minute readings

❌ Bây giờ là tám giờ mười năm.

Incorrect for 8:15; five after a pronounced tens expression becomes lăm.

✅ Bây giờ là tám giờ mười lăm.

It is 8:15 now.

The repair treats the minutes as the compound cardinal 15 rather than as two English-translated digits.

3. Adding an object classifier to a time unit

❌ Cuộc họp bắt đầu lúc hai cái giờ chiều.

Incorrect: giờ is already the time unit.

✅ Cuộc họp bắt đầu lúc hai giờ chiều.

The meeting starts at two in the afternoon.

Use cái with physical clocks—hai cái đồng hồ—not inside a clock reading.

4. Confusing a clock point with a duration

❌ Tôi học tiếng Việt lúc hai giờ mỗi tối.

Wrong if the intended meaning is duration: lúc hai giờ means at two o'clock.

✅ Tôi học tiếng Việt hai tiếng mỗi tối.

I study Vietnamese for two hours every evening.

Giờ names clock time and can also be an hour unit, but tiếng is especially natural for elapsed hours. Context and prepositions decide whether a number locates or measures an event.

Key Takeaways

  • Build clock readings as hour + giờ
    • minutes, optionally followed by phút.
  • Put rưỡi after giờ; use kém to count back from the next hour.
  • Keep mốt, tư, and lăm inside compound minute numbers.
  • Add sáng, trưa, chiều, tối, or đêm when a 12-hour time could be ambiguous.
  • Use 24-hour readings especially in formal schedules and announcements.
