Chưa and Not-Yet Meaning

Chưa means that an action or state has not been reached by a relevant time. It is often translated as “not yet” or “haven't/hasn't,” but its real contribution is a time boundary plus an open expectation: Tôi chưa ăn says that my eating has not happened up to now and leaves open the possibility that it will happen later.

That makes chưa different from neutral không, which simply denies a fact, habit, property, or intention. Vietnamese negation therefore reveals aspect: the speaker chooses whether to deny an event or present it as still pending. This page stays with chưa. Expressive chẳng/chả is treated on the separate Chẳng and Chả in Conversation page.

Put chưa before the predicate

The basic pattern is subject + chưa + predicate.

Tôi chưa ăn trưa; đợi tôi mười phút nhé.

I haven't eaten lunch yet; wait for me for ten minutes, okay?

Xe buýt chưa đến nên chúng tôi vẫn đang đợi.

The bus hasn't arrived yet, so we're still waiting.

Em chưa hiểu câu hỏi này.

I don't understand this question yet.

Chưa precedes the whole predicate that has not become true: chưa ăn trưa, chưa đến, chưa hiểu câu hỏi này. Vietnamese does not move the negator after the verb and does not add an auxiliary equivalent to English have.

💡
Imagine a line ending at “now” or another reference time. Chưa + predicate means the predicate has not become true anywhere on that line so far, but the future remains open.

Chưa versus không: pending or denied?

The core contrast is expectation, not merely past versus present.

Anh Nam không có con.

Nam doesn't have children.

Anh Nam chưa có con.

Nam doesn't have children yet.

The không sentence reports a negative fact. The chưa sentence presents having children as a possible later development. That implication can be socially sensitive: chưa may assume that a change is expected. Choose it only when that perspective fits the context.

Tôi không biết lái xe.

I don't know how to drive.

Tôi chưa biết lái xe.

I don't know how to drive yet.

The second sentence suggests that the speaker may learn. With abilities, qualifications, decisions, and life stages, chưa often communicates more than time; it frames the current absence as nonfinal.

The reference time need not be now

Although beginners first learn chưa as “not yet now,” it can be evaluated at a past or future point supplied by context.

Lúc tôi gọi, chị ấy chưa về nhà.

When I called, she hadn't come home yet.

Nếu đến tám giờ mà anh chưa tới, tôi sẽ đi trước.

If you haven't arrived by eight, I'll go on ahead.

In the first example, the boundary is the time of the call. In the second, it is eight o'clock in the future. Vietnamese verbs do not conjugate for tense; lúc tôi gọi, đến tám giờ, and the wider discourse establish the time from which chưa looks backward.

This also explains why translating chưa with one English tense fails. Depending on context, it can correspond to hasn't yet, hadn't yet, won't have yet, or simply isn't ready yet.

Chưa with states and gradable properties

An adjective predicate can also be a target state that has not been reached.

Phòng chưa sạch, mình lau thêm một lần nữa nhé.

The room isn't clean yet; let's wipe it once more.

Sức khỏe của bà chưa ổn nên bà vẫn ở bệnh viện.

Her health isn't stable yet, so she is still in the hospital.

Bản kế hoạch này chưa rõ; anh thêm vài ví dụ đi.

This plan isn't clear enough yet; add a few examples.

With a gradable adjective, chưa commonly means that the relevant standard has not been reached. Chưa rõ can therefore be “not clear yet” or “not sufficiently clear,” depending on context. Không rõ is a neutral “unclear/don't know,” without the same built-in expectation of improvement.

💡
With adjectives, ask whether the speaker sees the property as a target state. Chưa chín means “not ripe/cooked yet”; không chín simply denies that it is ripe or cooked in the relevant description.

Questions with đã...chưa and short answers

The common frame đã + predicate + chưa? asks whether the event has occurred by now. In everyday speech, đã is often omitted when the completion meaning is obvious.

Bạn đã ăn sáng chưa?

Have you eaten breakfast yet?

Mẹ gọi cho bác sĩ chưa?

Has Mom called the doctor yet?

Chưa, mẹ đang tìm số điện thoại.

Not yet; Mom is looking for the phone number.

The natural negative answer is simply chưa, not không. A positive answer can be rồi “already/done”: Rồi, mẹ gọi rồi “Yes, she has.” In this question pattern, final chưa asks whether the expected boundary has been crossed; it is not located before the predicate as in a negative statement.

Compare a general yes–no question with a completion question:

QuestionWhat it asksNatural negative answer
Bạn có ăn thịt không?Do you eat meat?Không.
Bạn ăn chưa?Have you eaten yet?Chưa.
Bạn đừng đi nhé.request not to leave; not a neutral information question—

Chưa từng, chưa bao giờ, and chưa hề

Vietnamese can extend the not-yet boundary across a person's entire experience.

Tôi chưa từng đi Huế, nhưng rất muốn đến đó.

I've never been to Hue, but I'd really like to go there.

Cô ấy chưa bao giờ ăn món này.

She has never eaten this dish.

Trước hôm qua, tôi chưa hề nghe chuyện đó.

Before yesterday, I had never heard that story at all.

Chưa từng means “have never once up to now,” chưa bao giờ “never up to now,” and emphatic chưa hề “have never at all.” Because chưa leaves later experience conceptually open, Tôi chưa từng đi Huế fits naturally with a desire to go. Tôi không bao giờ đi Huế instead tends to mean “I never go to Hue” or “I will never go to Hue,” a categorical habit or refusal.

Hề is a negative-polarity item: it strengthens a negative environment and cannot normally stand alone as a positive marker. It is emphatic, so use plain chưa when no “at all/ever” force is intended.

Scope and corrective negation

Chưa normally takes scope over the following predicate. Objects and complements remain inside that scope.

Tôi chưa gửi bản cuối cho khách hàng.

I haven't sent the final version to the client yet.

This denies completion of the sending event, not the existence of the final version or client. To correct one constituent, Vietnamese often states the contrast explicitly:

Tôi đã gửi bản nháp rồi, nhưng chưa gửi bản cuối.

I've sent the draft, but I haven't sent the final version yet.

Không phải là tôi quên; tôi chỉ chưa có thời gian trả lời.

It isn't that I forgot; I simply haven't had time to reply yet.

The second example contrasts corrective không phải là with aspectual chưa. Đâu có quên could make the denial more reactive: Tôi đâu có quên; tôi chỉ chưa trả lời “I didn't forget at all; I just haven't replied yet.” Negative forms reveal whether the speaker contradicts an accusation or reports an unfinished event.

How chưa fits the larger negative system

FormTypical phraseSpeaker's move
khôngkhông biếtneutral denial
chưachưa ănevent remains unrealized by the reference time
chẳng/chảchẳng ai, chả biếtexpressive or conversational negation
đừngđừng điprohibition or negative request
không phải làkhông phải là lỗi của emrejects an identity or classification
đâu cóđâu có quênpushes back against an assumption

Chẳng is standard and often emphatic; chả is informal and especially frequent in Northern conversation, though widely understood. Neither is a substitute for the temporal meaning of chưa. Đừng changes the speech act from statement to directive. The choice of negator therefore tells the listener not just whether something is false, but how the speaker positions that falsity.

A dialogue: not refusing, just not ready yet

Mẹ: Con nộp hồ sơ chưa?

Mom: Have you submitted the application yet?

An: Chưa ạ. Con đã viết xong nhưng chưa kiểm tra lần cuối.

An: Not yet. I've finished writing it, but I haven't done the final check.

Mẹ: Con không muốn nộp nữa à?

Mom: Don't you want to submit it anymore?

An: Không phải đâu ạ. Con đâu có đổi ý; con chỉ thấy bản này chưa đủ rõ.

An: That's not it. I haven't changed my mind at all; I just find that this version isn't clear enough yet.

The first chưa gives a short not-yet answer. Chưa kiểm tra identifies the pending action, and thấy bản này chưa đủ rõ presents clarity as a standard not yet met. The mother's không muốn tests a categorical change of intention, which An rejects with corrective không phải đâu and đâu có.

Common Mistakes

1. Using không when the event is still pending.

❌ Tôi không sửa xong báo cáo.

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘I haven't finished revising the report yet’; this can sound like a denial that you finish it or a report of failure.

✅ Tôi chưa sửa xong báo cáo.

I haven't finished revising the report yet.

Chưa locates noncompletion at the present boundary while leaving later completion open.

2. Putting chưa after the predicate in a statement.

❌ Tôi đọc chưa cuốn sách này.

Incorrect statement order — this resembles a broken question pattern.

✅ Tôi chưa đọc cuốn sách này.

I haven't read this book yet.

Preverbal chưa negates a statement. Sentence-final chưa belongs to a question such as Bạn đọc cuốn sách này chưa?

3. Answering a not-yet question with không.

❌ A: Bạn ăn cơm chưa? — B: Không.

Unnatural as the ordinary answer; không may sound like a refusal or categorical no.

✅ A: Bạn ăn cơm chưa? — B: Chưa.

A: Have you eaten yet? — B: Not yet.

The answer repeats the aspectual choice made by the question.

4. Using chưa for a firm future refusal.

❌ Tôi chưa bao giờ quay lại đó.

Wrong for the intended categorical meaning ‘I will never go back there’; this says only that it has never happened up to now.

✅ Tôi sẽ không bao giờ quay lại đó.

I will never go back there.

Chưa bao giờ leaves the later timeline open; future sẽ không bao giờ closes it categorically.

5. Assuming chưa is always socially neutral.

△ Chị chưa có con à?

Grammatically possible, but potentially intrusive: chưa implies that having children is an expected later stage.

✅ Chị có con không?

Do you have children?

The neutral có...không question avoids imposing an expectation. Grammar and social meaning meet in the choice between chưa and không.

Key Takeaways

  • Chưa + predicate means the action or state has not been reached by the relevant time.
  • Unlike không, chưa normally leaves open a later change.
  • The reference point may be present, past, or future; context supplies it.
  • Ask about completion with (đã) + predicate + chưa? and answer negatively with chưa.
  • Chưa từng, chưa bao giờ, and emphatic chưa hề extend the not-yet boundary across prior experience.
