Rất is the standard preverbal degree word meaning “very”: rất đẹp “very beautiful,” rất mới “very new,” and rất khó “very difficult.” In the basic, neutral pattern, it comes immediately before the gradable property or state that it strengthens. Because Vietnamese property words can already serve as predicates, Căn nhà rất đẹp needs neither an equivalent of English is nor any change to đẹp.
The important idea is scalar. Rất says that the property lies high relative to a standard supplied by the context. It does not mean “too” and does not by itself say that a practical limit has been crossed.
The basic pattern
Use:
subject + rất + property predicate
Căn nhà này rất đẹp và yên tĩnh.
This house is very beautiful and quiet.
Điện thoại mới rất nhẹ nhưng pin không tốt lắm.
The new phone is very light, but its battery isn't very good.
Phòng họp hôm nay rất nóng.
The meeting room is very hot today.
There is no là before the property. Đẹp, nhẹ, and nóng head stative predicates; rất modifies their degree. This is why the structure is closer to subject + degree + predicate than to an English sequence assembled from be + adverb + adjective.
Conversational Vietnamese also permits the emphatic frame rất là + property. For example, Quán này rất là đông vào cuối tuần means “This place gets really crowded on weekends.” Here là belongs to an expressive degree frame; the property does not suddenly require a copula. Plain Quán này rất đông is the neutral, register-safe version. The dedicated page on when là appears before a property expression compares this frame with formal and identificational uses of là.
Rất inside a noun phrase
When the property modifies a noun, the whole sequence rất + property follows that noun:
Họ vừa thuê một căn hộ rất nhỏ ở trung tâm.
They have just rented a very small apartment downtown.
Đây là một giải pháp rất đơn giản và hiệu quả.
This is a very simple and effective solution.
Compare the layers:
- căn hộ — apartment
- căn hộ nhỏ — small apartment
- căn hộ rất nhỏ — very small apartment
English places both very and small before apartment. Vietnamese places the descriptive phrase after the noun but keeps rất before nhỏ. With more than one property, repeat the degree word when it clearly applies to both: một căn phòng rất nhỏ và rất tối “a very small and very dark room.” Without repetition, context and coordination determine the scope.
Do not automatically put rất before an expressive reduplicative. A form such as nho nhỏ already contributes its own attenuative, often affectionate nuance, so căn phòng nho nhỏ is not just a decorative variant of căn phòng rất nhỏ. Lexicalized sequences can also change meaning when rất is inserted: người lớn normally means “adult,” while người rất lớn is compositional and describes a very large—or, in context, very important—person.
Góc đọc sách nho nhỏ này yên tĩnh và đủ sáng.
This little reading corner is quiet and has enough light.
What rất contributes
The standard for “very” changes with the comparison class. Một căn nhà rất nhỏ may still be larger than một căn phòng rất lớn: one is very small for a house, the other very large for a room. Rất raises the degree above what is normal or expected for the relevant class; it does not give an exact measurement.
Đối với một căn hộ ở trung tâm, chỗ này rất rộng.
For a downtown apartment, this place is very spacious.
Con đường này rất hẹp đối với xe tải.
This road is very narrow for trucks.
That contextual meaning differs from an endpoint-sensitive excessive. Cửa rất hẹp says the door is very narrow. Cửa quá hẹp để đưa tủ vào says its narrowness crosses the maximum compatible with getting the cabinet through. The latter belongs to Excess with Quá.
Bare property, rất, lắm, and comparison
The following contrasts share the same property đẹp but organize the degree meaning differently:
| Expression | Core contribution | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|
| nhà đẹp | positive property | beautiful house / the house is beautiful |
| rất đẹp | high degree | very beautiful; neutral and widely usable |
| đẹp lắm | high degree after the predicate | really beautiful; often more conversational or involved |
| đẹp hơn | comparative degree | more beautiful |
| căn nhà nhỏ màu xanh | postnominal description | small blue house |
Rất đẹp and đẹp lắm overlap, but they are not freely interchangeable pieces. Rất is fixed before the predicate; lắm follows it and often sounds more speaker-involved in conversation. In careful exposition, rất is a dependable neutral intensifier. This page leaves the post-predicate pattern to Sentence-Final Lắm.
Rất with states and experiencer predicates
Rất also modifies some predicates translated as English verbs, especially states, preferences, needs, and mental attitudes. This confirms that its distribution is about gradability, not the English label “adjective.”
Tôi rất thích căn nhà nhỏ màu xanh ở cuối phố.
I really like the small blue house at the end of the street.
Chúng tôi rất cần thêm thời gian để kiểm tra số liệu.
We really need more time to check the data.
Cô ấy rất lo vì con chưa về nhà.
She is very worried because her child hasn't come home yet.
Do not extend rất to every action. Ordinary event predicates such as đi “go,” mua “buy,” and đóng cửa “close the door” are not degrees by themselves. Vietnamese instead grades manner, frequency, amount, or an associated state: đi rất nhanh “go very quickly,” mua rất nhiều sách “buy very many books.”
Negation and rất
The natural expression for “not very beautiful” is không đẹp lắm, not a word-for-word không rất đẹp. Vietnamese places không before the property and uses post-predicate lắm for this attenuated negative.
Căn phòng không lớn lắm, nhưng đủ cho hai người.
The room isn't very large, but it's enough for two people.
Món này không cay lắm đâu, bạn thử đi.
This dish isn't very spicy; give it a try. (informal)
The different sequence rất không + property/state does occur, especially with negative evaluations and attitudes: rất không hài lòng means “very dissatisfied / really not satisfied.” It strongly intensifies the negative judgment; it is not the mild “not very satisfied.”
Khách hàng rất không hài lòng với cách xử lý này.
The customer is extremely dissatisfied with how this was handled. (formal/strong)
The word order reflects scope. In không tốt lắm, the negative denies a high degree of goodness, so the result is the mild “not very good.” In rất không tốt, rất grades the negative assessment không tốt as a whole, producing a forceful “very bad / seriously not good.” The contrast must still be learned as a Vietnamese pattern, but it is not a free rearrangement of the same three words.
A short dialogue
A: Căn hộ mới của bạn thế nào? B: Vị trí rất tiện và phòng khách rất sáng, nhưng phòng ngủ không lớn lắm.
A: What's your new apartment like? B: The location is very convenient and the living room is very bright, but the bedroom isn't very large.
The two positive evaluations use rất + property. The restrained negative uses không + property + lắm. Changing only the order of the degree material changes the stance: rất không tiện would be a strong complaint that the location is highly inconvenient.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting rất after the property
❌ Căn nhà này đẹp rất.
Incorrect—rất does not follow the property.
✅ Căn nhà này rất đẹp.
This house is very beautiful.
2. Adding là before the property phrase
❌ Phòng này là rất nhỏ.
Incorrect as a neutral description—the property predicate needs no copula.
✅ Phòng này rất nhỏ.
This room is very small.
3. Using rất as though it meant too
❌ Cửa rất hẹp để đưa tủ vào.
Incorrect for ‘too narrow to get the cabinet through’—rất does not encode the failed-purpose limit.
✅ Cửa quá hẹp để đưa tủ vào.
The door is too narrow to get the cabinet through.
4. Translating not very as không rất
❌ Khách sạn này không rất yên tĩnh.
Incorrect in ordinary Vietnamese—the English order has been copied.
✅ Khách sạn này không yên tĩnh lắm.
This hotel isn't very quiet.
5. Combining rất and lắm around one property
❌ Căn hộ này rất đẹp lắm.
Nonstandard over-stacking in the intended neutral meaning.
✅ Căn hộ này rất đẹp; căn hộ này đẹp lắm.
This apartment is very beautiful; this apartment is really beautiful.
Key Takeaways
- Put rất before a gradable predicate: rất đẹp, rất nhỏ, rất thích.
- Recognize conversational rất là + property as an emphatic frame; use plain rất + property as the neutral default.
- In a noun phrase, the whole degree phrase follows the noun: căn hộ rất nhỏ.
- Rất marks a high contextual degree, not excess beyond a practical endpoint.
- Use không + property + lắm for “not very”: không tốt lắm.
- Keep rất đẹp and đẹp lắm as distinct word-order patterns rather than mixing them.
