Before an action verb, Vietnamese được commonly says that someone is allowed to act or gets the opportunity to act. Em được về sớm can mean “You are allowed to leave early” or “You get to leave early.” The first reading foregrounds authorization; the second presents the event as a favorable opportunity or benefit.
This page concerns preverbal được + action. The word also appears in passive constructions and after a verb to express successful attainment, as in làm được “manage to do.” Those patterns help explain why word order matters, but they are not interchangeable with permission. Explicit institutional authorization with được phép is treated on Được Phép in Explicit Rules.
Permission: someone or something allows the action
The basic pattern is subject + được + action predicate. The source of permission may be a person, a rule, or simply shared understanding.
Hôm nay các em được dùng từ điển trong giờ kiểm tra.
Today you are allowed to use dictionaries during the test.
Mẹ bảo tối nay con được đi xem phim với các bạn.
Mom said that tonight I can go to the cinema with my friends.
Khách được mang một túi nhỏ lên máy bay.
Passengers may bring one small bag onto the plane.
In a warm everyday context, được is usually lighter than được phép. A parent, teacher, host, or colleague can grant permission with được without sounding like a legal notice. In a formal rule, được phép makes the authorization source more explicit.
Opportunity and favorable experience
No one needs to issue permission for every được clause. The form can present an event as a welcome chance, benefit, or fortunate experience.
Năm ngoái tôi được gặp nhà văn mà mình yêu thích từ nhỏ.
Last year I got to meet the writer I had admired since childhood.
Nhờ chương trình trao đổi, Lan được học ở Huế sáu tháng.
Thanks to the exchange program, Lan got to study in Huế for six months.
Cuối tuần này cả nhà được nghỉ ba ngày.
This weekend the whole family gets three days off.
English get to is often a better guide than can for this use. The subject receives access to an experience. The event may be pleasant, privileged, or simply made possible by arrangements.
Context can leave permission and opportunity deliberately intertwined. Ngày mai em được làm việc ở nhà may report a manager's permission and simultaneously present working at home as a benefit.
Permission, capacity, and learned skill
Vietnamese keeps distinctions that English frequently collapses into can.
| Form | Question answered | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| biết + verb | Has the skill been learned? | biết lái xe — know how to drive |
| có thể + verb | Are capacity and circumstances sufficient? | có thể lái xe — be able to drive |
| được + verb | Is access granted, or does the chance arise? | được lái xe — be allowed/get to drive |
| được phép + verb | Is the action explicitly authorized? | được phép lái xe — be formally permitted to drive |
Tôi biết lái xe và hôm nay có thể lái, nhưng tôi không được dùng xe của công ty.
I know how to drive and am able to drive today, but I am not allowed to use the company car.
All three claims can be true together: skill, present capacity, and permission are separate dimensions.
A compact modal map
The broader modal system also separates obligation, advice, and probability:
| Minimal contrast | Core force |
|---|---|
| phải đi | must go: obligation or necessity |
| cần làm | need to do: requirement for a goal |
| có thể đến | can/may come: possibility or capacity |
| được phép vào | be permitted to enter: explicit authorization |
| nên nghỉ | should rest: advice |
| chắc là đúng | is probably right: confident probability |
Được contributes neither probability nor evidential support. For those meanings, Vietnamese uses stance expressions such as chắc, hẳn, dường như, and có lẽ.
Dường như mai chúng tôi được nghỉ; thông báo này chắc là đúng vì trưởng phòng vừa gửi.
It seems that we have tomorrow off; this notice is probably correct because the department head just sent it.
Cô ấy hẳn là được tham dự vì tên đã có trong danh sách, nhưng có lẽ cô ấy sẽ đến muộn.
She must be allowed to attend because her name is already on the list, but perhaps she will arrive late.
The stance markers evaluate the truth of the permission claim; được tham dự itself supplies the permitted action.
Asking for and granting permission
Two frequent question frames are có được + verb + không? and verb + được không? Both can request permission, but the first makes the modal status more explicit.
Em có được nộp bài vào ngày mai không ạ?
May I submit the assignment tomorrow?
Em ngồi đây được không ạ?
May I sit here?
The second literally places được after the action, and in other contexts postverbal được can mean successful ability. In a polite question about sitting, however, context strongly favors permission. Address terms and ạ locate the relationship; English may I is not translated by a single word alone.
A natural grant is often simply Được, Được chứ, or a fuller clause:
Được chứ, em cứ ngồi đây nhé.
Of course; go ahead and sit here.
Cứ encourages the listener to proceed and removes hesitation. It is interpersonal permission, not necessarily a statement about official policy.
Negation and scope
Preverbal không được + verb commonly means that the action is prohibited. It may also mean that someone does not get the opportunity, especially when the context describes circumstances rather than rules.
Không được hút thuốc trong thang máy.
Smoking is not allowed in the elevator.
Hôm qua tôi bận nên không được gặp cô ấy trước khi cô ấy đi.
Yesterday I was busy, so I did not get to see her before she left.
The first is a prohibition; the second is a missed opportunity. The reason clause tôi bận rules out an authority-based reading. The contrast between không thể and không được deserves its own page.
Do not confuse preverbal không được làm with postverbal làm không được. The latter usually means “cannot manage to do it.”
Tôi không được mở cửa sổ, còn cửa này thì tôi kéo mãi cũng không mở được.
I am not allowed to open the window, and as for this door, I cannot get it open however much I pull.
Time, aspect, and a change of permission
Đã được + verb places the granting or opportunity before the reference point. Sẽ được + verb projects it into the future. Được + verb + rồi often announces that permission or access is now available.
Tôi đã được xem bản thảo trước khi sách xuất bản.
I got to see the manuscript before the book was published.
Sau khi hoàn thành khóa an toàn, nhân viên mới sẽ được vào xưởng.
After completing the safety course, new employees will be allowed into the workshop.
Em được về rồi; cô giáo vừa nhắn cho mẹ.
You can go home now; the teacher has just messaged me.
These markers locate permission or opportunity; they do not by themselves assert that the later action was completed. Tôi đã được xem normally presents the viewing as realized, but Tôi đã được phép xem only says permission had been granted and may leave actual viewing open.
A dialogue where được changes the interpretation
Linh: Tối nay cậu có thể đến buổi tổng duyệt không?
Quân: Có thể, nhưng người ngoài có được vào hội trường không?
Linh: Được. Tớ đăng ký tên cậu rồi, nên cậu được ngồi ở hàng ghế khách mời.
Quân: Hay quá, lần đầu tiên tớ được xem cả buổi tổng duyệt.
Có thể đến asks whether attendance is feasible. Được vào asks permission. The final được xem foregrounds a valued opportunity. The same word connects access granted by arrangements with the experience that access enables.
Common Mistakes
1. Using biết when the actual question is permission.
❌ Tôi biết dùng nhà vệ sinh không ạ?
Incorrect for asking permission: biết asks about learned know-how.
✅ Tôi dùng nhà vệ sinh được không ạ?
May I use the restroom?
The repaired frame conventionally asks the listener to allow the action.
2. Using được to describe learned skill.
❌ Tôi được bơi từ năm sáu tuổi.
Wrong for ‘I have known how to swim since I was six’; this suggests permission or opportunity.
✅ Tôi biết bơi từ năm sáu tuổi.
I have known how to swim since I was six.
3. Misreading word order.
❌ Tôi sửa được máy này.
Wrong for ‘I am allowed to repair this machine’: sửa được means ‘can manage to repair it.’
✅ Tôi được sửa máy này, vì sếp đã giao việc đó cho tôi.
I am allowed to repair this machine because my boss assigned me that task.
Preverbal được sửa concerns access; postverbal sửa được concerns successful capability.
4. Assuming không được always reports a formal ban.
❌ Hôm qua trời mưa nên tôi không được chạy bộ — công viên cấm tôi.
The added ban is unjustified: the weather context suggests a missed opportunity.
✅ Hôm qua trời mưa nên tôi không được chạy bộ.
Yesterday it rained, so I did not get to run.
