Vietnamese theo connects the idea of physically following with the more abstract ideas “according to,” “in accordance with,” and “organized by.” The connection is not arbitrary: when you act theo hướng dẫn, you let the instructions lead your action just as you might follow a person along a road.
This is a clear example of why Vietnamese coverbs should not be treated as a list of European-style prepositions. Theo is an ordinary verb in one frame and a relation-marking word before a source, standard, path, or principle in another. Its form does not change; the clause around it reveals the function.
Theo as the verb “follow”
As the main predicate, theo describes moving after someone, joining someone’s course of action, or continuing to track something. No separate word meaning to is needed before the object.
Cứ theo tôi, lối ra ở phía này.
Just follow me; the exit is this way.
Con mèo theo cô bé ra tận cổng.
The cat followed the little girl all the way to the gate.
Context distinguishes physical pursuit from choosing someone’s path or career.
Anh ấy quyết định theo nghề y như mẹ.
He decided to go into medicine like his mother.
In these examples theo carries the main event. It can take aspect and negation in the same way as other verbs: đã theo, đang theo, không theo.
Theo + source: “according to”
Before a report, speaker, rule, or body of information, theo identifies the source or viewpoint on which a statement rests. A source phrase often comes first and frames the whole statement.
Theo dự báo thời tiết, chiều nay sẽ có mưa lớn.
According to the weather forecast, there will be heavy rain this afternoon.
Theo tôi, phương án thứ hai hợp lý hơn.
In my opinion, the second option is more reasonable.
Theo bác sĩ, tôi cần nghỉ thêm vài ngày.
According to the doctor, I need to rest for a few more days.
Theo tôi is a neutral “in my view.” It does not mean that the speaker is physically behind me, and it does not claim that I caused the situation.
Theo + standard or instruction
After a main verb, theo can introduce the model, instruction, rule, or criterion governing the action. English translations vary: according to, following, in line with, or simply as.
Bạn làm theo hướng dẫn trên màn hình nhé.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Nhà trường xếp lớp theo trình độ của học viên.
The school groups classes according to the learners’ proficiency.
Hồ sơ phải được lưu theo thứ tự thời gian.
The files must be stored in chronological order. (formal)
The main predicate tells what happens; theo + standard tells what guides its form. In làm theo, therefore, làm is “do” and theo introduces the model being followed.
Path and alignment
With a route, edge, or line, theo means “along” or “following.” Dọc theo makes longitudinal movement or extension especially explicit.
Cứ đi theo con đường này rồi rẽ trái ở ngã tư.
Keep following this road, then turn left at the intersection.
Có nhiều quán nhỏ nằm dọc theo lối đi ven sông.
There are many small cafés along the riverside walkway.
This path meaning differs from a goal with đến. Đi theo con đường này describes the route; đi đến trường identifies the endpoint. Both can occur together: Đi theo đường này đến trường — “Follow this road to the school.”
A decision table
| Intended relation | Use | Diagnostic question |
|---|---|---|
| physical following | theo + person/thing | Who or what leads the movement? |
| reported source/viewpoint | theo + source | Who says so? |
| rule, model, or standard | VERB + theo + standard | What guides how it is done? |
| route or alignment | (dọc) theo + path | What line does it follow? |
| cause | do / vì + cause | Why did it happen? |
| agent | do / bởi + actor | Who performed it? |
Source, author, and cause are different
One noun can participate in three different relations, so marker choice matters:
Theo báo cáo, lượng khách đã tăng.
According to the report, visitor numbers increased.
Báo cáo do chị Hương viết.
The report was written by Ms. Hương.
Cuộc họp kéo dài vì báo cáo có nhiều điểm chưa rõ.
The meeting ran long because the report contained many unclear points.
The first sentence reports information through a source. The second identifies an author. The third gives a reason. English by, according to, and because of may all stand near a noun, but Vietnamese keeps these semantic roles distinct.
The larger relational map
Compare theo with other preverbal or postverbal relational phrases:
| Phrase | Relation | Natural frame |
|---|---|---|
| ở nhà | static location | hôm nay ở nhà — stay home today |
| đến trường | goal | đi đến trường — go to school |
| từ Hà Nội | source | bay từ Hà Nội — fly from Hà Nội |
| với bạn | accompaniment | đi với bạn — go with a friend |
| bằng xe buýt | means | đi bằng xe buýt — go by bus |
| cho em | recipient | gửi cho em — send to you |
| theo hướng dẫn | standard | làm theo hướng dẫn — follow instructions |
| trên bàn | spatial relation | để trên bàn — put on the table |
Complex locations use relational nouns such as trên, dưới, trong, ngoài, trước, and sau, often after ở: ở dưới cầu, “under the bridge.” Theo marks a path or guiding relation; it does not replace the relational noun that specifies where something is.
When ở is and is not involved
Because English uses at/on/in very freely, learners sometimes put ở before every theo phrase. Do not. Theo báo cáo and theo hướng dẫn are not locations. Use ở only when there is a genuine static place.
Thông tin đó nằm trong báo cáo.
That information appears in the report.
Theo báo cáo, thông tin đó chưa được xác nhận.
According to the report, that information has not been confirmed.
The first sentence locates information inside a document; trong supplies the containment relation, while nằm is already the locating predicate, so an extra ở is unnecessary. The second cites that document as the source; only theo expresses that relation.
A dialogue where theo changes the interpretation
— Sao anh đổi lịch? — Tôi đổi theo yêu cầu của khách hàng.
— Why did you change the schedule? — I changed it in accordance with the customer’s request.
— Có phải khách hàng tự đổi lịch không? — Không, lịch do tôi đổi.
— Did the customer change the schedule themselves? — No, I was the one who changed it.
Theo yêu cầu của khách hàng says the request guided the change; it does not say the customer directly performed the change. Do tôi đổi names the actor. This distinction is important in workplace communication because source, authorization, and responsibility are not the same thing.
Register
All core uses of theo are neutral. Theo tôi is normal in conversation and professional discussion. Theo quy định, theo số liệu, and theo quan điểm của... are particularly common in (formal/academic) writing. Dọc theo is neutral descriptive language, not inherently literary. Common Mistakes
1. Using bởi to cite a source.
❌ Bởi bác sĩ, tôi cần nghỉ thêm hai ngày.
Incorrect for ‘According to the doctor’; bởi suggests cause or agency.
✅ Theo bác sĩ, tôi cần nghỉ thêm hai ngày.
According to the doctor, I need to rest for two more days.
2. Adding ở to a nonspatial source phrase.
❌ Ở theo báo cáo, doanh thu đã giảm.
Incorrect: the report is an information source, not a physical location.
✅ Theo báo cáo, doanh thu đã giảm.
According to the report, revenue decreased.
3. Confusing accompaniment with following.
❌ Tôi theo bạn đi xem phim.
Wrong for the intended neutral meaning ‘I’m going to the movies with my friend’; this can suggest following the friend’s lead.
✅ Tôi đi xem phim với bạn.
I’m going to the movies with my friend.
4. Using theo for a destination.
❌ Sáng nào tôi cũng đi theo trường.
Incorrect for ‘go to school’; theo presents a route or thing followed.
✅ Sáng nào tôi cũng đến trường.
Every morning I go to school.
5. Omitting the spatial relation after ở.
❌ Chìa khóa ở bàn.
Incomplete for the usual meaning ‘The key is on the table.’
✅ Chìa khóa ở trên bàn.
The key is on the table.
