Khi Nào and Bao Giờ

Vietnamese khi nào and bao giờ both ask “when.” In many ordinary questions they overlap, but they are not mechanical synonyms: khi nào often presents the time as an event point or condition, while bao giờ readily ranges over a broader time horizon and participates in expressions such as không bao giờ “never” and bao giờ mới “when finally.” Both can occur before or after the main clause because Vietnamese time expressions are mobile; this is not English-style wh-fronting.

This page concentrates on time. Questions of cause with tại sao, vì sao, and sao are covered separately on Tại Sao, Vì Sao, and Sao.

The shared core meaning

For a planned event, either expression may request its time.

Khi nào chị bắt đầu công việc mới?

When are you starting the new job?

Chị bắt đầu công việc mới khi nào?

When are you starting the new job?

Bao giờ anh về thăm quê?

When will you go back to visit your hometown?

Initial position sets the time question as a frame; final position often keeps attention on the event before requesting its timing. The difference is discourse organization, not grammatical tense. Khi nào remains a time phrase whether it comes first or last.

💡
Do not diagnose every initial khi nào or bao giờ as English wh-movement. Vietnamese also says Ngày mai chị bắt đầu công việc mới with an ordinary time phrase first. Time adjuncts are naturally mobile.

Khi nào: event time and conditional framing

Interrogative khi nào asks at what time or on what occasion an event occurs. It is especially transparent when the event is already part of the conversational plan.

Cuộc họp kết thúc khi nào để tôi đặt xe?

When does the meeting end, so I can book a car?

Khi nào em nộp xong luận văn?

When will you finish submitting your thesis?

The same form also appears non-interrogatively in a conditional-temporal pattern, often with thì: Khi nào rảnh thì gọi cho tôi “Call me whenever/when you are free.” There is no request for an answer in that sentence.

Khi nào đến nơi thì nhắn cho mẹ nhé.

Message Mom when you arrive. (informal family instruction)

Intonation and clause structure distinguish the question Khi nào con đến nơi? from the subordinate frame Khi nào đến nơi thì.... Do not assume that the written words khi nào always form a question.

Bao giờ: broad horizon, ever, and emphatic timing

Interrogative bao giờ can be as neutral as khi nào, but it also combines productively with polarity and focus. Bao giờ mới often conveys “when at last/only when,” suggesting that the event is delayed or a threshold must be reached.

Bao giờ cửa hàng mới mở lại?

When will the shop finally reopen?

Đến bao giờ mình mới có kết quả?

How long will it be before we finally get the results?

That mới can add impatience or concern. It is not automatically impolite, but asking a colleague Bao giờ anh mới làm xong? may sound like criticism: “When are you finally going to finish?” A neutral scheduling question is Khi nào anh làm xong? or Dự kiến khi nào anh làm xong? (formal/professional).

In negative statements, không bao giờ means “never,” and chưa bao giờ means “never yet / have never.” Here bao giờ is not asking for a date.

Tôi chưa bao giờ đi tàu đêm.

I have never traveled by night train.

Cô ấy không bao giờ trả lời email sau mười giờ tối.

She never answers email after ten at night.

Bao giờ cũng can mean “always,” as in Anh ấy bao giờ cũng đến sớm. These polarity-sensitive uses make bao giờ broader than a simple interrogative equivalent of English when.

A practical comparison

Khi nào...thì...when/whenever...then...temporal-condition frame

There is no dependable rule that khi nào is only future while postverbal bao giờ is only past. Time reference comes from context, aspect markers, and time expressions. Both forms occur nationwide; speakers and situations differ, so avoid inventing a rigid North–South or past–future split.

Time questions versus polarity and confirmation

Vietnamese question forms keep clause order largely declarative, while the frame indicates the answer expected.

FormQuestion typeRequested answer
Bạn khỏe không?compact polarpositive or negative state
Anh có đi không?full polarwhether he goes
Ai đến?person contenta person
Đi đâu?place contenta destination
Phải không?confirmationconfirmation or correction
Được chứ?permission/alignmentacceptance or refusal
Khi nào đi?time contenta time or occasion

An open time question normally does not take final không. Once a time is proposed, confirmation becomes appropriate.

Chuyến bay khởi hành lúc chín giờ, phải không?

The flight departs at nine, right?

Mình gặp nhau vào sáng thứ Bảy được chứ?

Can we meet on Saturday morning? / Saturday morning is okay, right?

The first checks a believed schedule; the second proposes a time and seeks acceptance. Chuyến bay khởi hành khi nào? leaves the time unknown. Chuyến bay có khởi hành không? asks whether it departs at all. These are different presuppositions, not stylistic variants.

Presupposition and alternatives

Asking “when” usually treats the event as expected. Bao giờ chị chuyển nhà? suggests that moving is planned. If that is uncertain, ask Chị có định chuyển nhà không? first. In sensitive conversation, avoiding an unwarranted presupposition is a form of politeness.

Dự án dự kiến hoàn thành khi nào ạ?

When is the project expected to be completed? (formal/deferential)

Dự án có tiếp tục không, hay công ty sẽ dừng lại?

Will the project continue, or will the company stop it?

For two named times, use hay rather than an open khi nào question.

Anh về vào thứ Sáu hay thứ Bảy?

Are you coming back on Friday or Saturday?

Anh về khi nào? permits any relevant time; the hay question presents two alternatives. Anh về thứ Sáu, phải không? goes further and displays the speaker's expected answer.

Social calibration

The grammar stays stable, but pronouns, framing, and particles control how the question lands. With a senior or in institutional communication, a full clause with dự kiến and final ạ can be appropriately deferential. Among intimates, a short question may be warm and ordinary.

Bao giờ con về ăn cơm với bố mẹ?

When will you come home to eat with Mom and Dad? (family)

Thưa thầy, khi nào lớp mình nhận được kết quả ạ?

Excuse me, when will our class receive the results, sir? (formal/deferential)

Final hả can request confirmation or convey surprise (informal): Mai em đi rồi hả? “You're leaving tomorrow already?” Final nhỉ invites shared reflection: Bao giờ mình mới gặp lại nhau nhỉ? “I wonder when we'll meet again.” Chứ generally seeks expected agreement after a proposition rather than forming a neutral open time question. Ư is literary, elevated, or stylized in many modern uses and should not replace everyday ạ.

Answers and negative questions

Answer with an explicit time phrase and, when useful, repeat the event.

— Khi nào bên giao hàng tới? — Khoảng ba giờ chiều họ sẽ tới.

— When will the delivery team arrive? — They will arrive at about three in the afternoon.

Negative questions need a clear polarity rather than an English-style bare yes or no.

— Anh chưa biết bao giờ về à? — Chưa, chiều mai anh mới chốt được lịch.

— You still don't know when you'll return? — Not yet; I can only finalize the schedule tomorrow afternoon.

— Cuộc họp không bắt đầu lúc tám giờ sao? — Có, vẫn bắt đầu lúc tám giờ như kế hoạch.

— Doesn't the meeting start at eight? — It does; it still starts at eight as planned.

The reply có...vẫn bắt đầu rejects the negative wording unambiguously. The first reply uses chưa because knowing the time remains incomplete.

A natural dialogue

— Khi nào cậu chuyển sang căn hộ mới? — Sáng Chủ nhật, nếu bên vận chuyển đến đúng giờ.

— When are you moving to the new apartment? — Sunday morning, if the movers arrive on time. (informal peers)

— Bao giờ cậu mới đóng gói xong? — Chắc tối thứ Bảy. Đồ vẫn còn nhiều quá.

— When will you finally finish packing? — Probably Saturday evening. There is still so much stuff. (informal peers)

— Tớ qua giúp lúc hai giờ được chứ? — Được, cảm ơn cậu nhé.

— I can come help at two, okay? — Yes, thanks. (informal peers)

The first turn requests a planned event time neutrally. Bao giờ mới in the second conveys concern about delay. The last turn proposes a precise time and changes to được chứ?, an acceptance check. The question form changes because the conversational task changes.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding English do-support.

❌ Khi nào làm anh về quê?

Incorrect — làm cannot function as auxiliary ‘do’ in a time question.

✅ Khi nào anh về quê thăm ông bà?

When are you going back to your hometown to visit your grandparents?

2. Moving bao giờ while also leaving an English-like gap structure.

❌ Bao giờ bạn có làm bắt đầu khóa học?

Incorrect — the clause contains invented do-support and an unnatural verb sequence.

✅ Khóa học của bạn bắt đầu khi nào?

When does your course begin?

Initial Bao giờ khóa học của bạn bắt đầu? is also grammatical because time adjuncts are mobile; the error is not initial placement itself but importing English auxiliary syntax.

3. Adding final không to an open time question.

❌ Chị sẽ đến khi nào không?

Incorrect for ‘When will you arrive?’ because khi nào already requests the time.

✅ Chị dự kiến sẽ đến khi nào?

When do you expect to arrive?

4. Using bao giờ mới without noticing its interpersonal force.

⚠ Bao giờ anh mới gửi báo cáo?

Grammatical, but it can sound like ‘When will you finally send the report?’

✅ Dự kiến khi nào anh gửi báo cáo cho tôi?

When do you expect to send me the report? (neutral professional)

5. Answering a negative time question with bare yes/no.

⚠ — Hội thảo không diễn ra ngày mai à? — Có.

Possible, but too easy to reverse under English yes/no habits.

✅ — Hội thảo không diễn ra ngày mai à? — Có, hội thảo vẫn diễn ra vào sáng mai.

— Isn't the conference taking place tomorrow? — Yes, it is still taking place tomorrow morning.

💡
Ask polarity before time when the event itself is uncertain. Once the event is established, use khi nào or bao giờ; once a time is proposed, use phải không?, à?, or an acceptability frame as appropriate.

Key Takeaways

  • Khi nào and bao giờ both ask “when,” and both may appear before or after the main clause.
  • Khi nào readily frames event time or “when/whenever”; bao giờ also forms không bao giờ, chưa bao giờ, and bao giờ mới.
  • Do not impose a rigid future/past or regional split that actual usage does not support.
  • An open time question has no English-style do and normally no final không.
  • “When?” presupposes an event; ask whether the event will occur before asking its time when that assumption is uncertain.
