Vietnamese gần and xa express relative distance: gần “near/close” and xa “far.” Unlike more noun-like locatives such as giữa or bên, they readily behave as stative relational predicates: Nhà tôi gần trường is already a complete sentence. They can also follow ở, appear after nouns as modifiers, combine with degree words, and participate in measured-distance constructions with cách.
This flexibility shows why Vietnamese spatial vocabulary cannot be reduced to a list of English prepositions. Gần/xa have adjective- or verb-like behavior, while ở can itself be a locating verb or coverb. Their combination depends on what the speaker wants to predicate. This page focuses on distance; orientation across a shared gap with đối diện is left to the next page.
Bare relational predicates
The simplest pattern is ITEM + gần/xa + LANDMARK. No equivalent of English to or from is required.
Nhà tôi gần trường nên sáng nào tôi cũng đi bộ.
My house is near the school, so I walk every morning.
Sân bay khá xa trung tâm thành phố.
The airport is quite far from the city center.
Degree words fit naturally before gần/xa: rất gần, khá gần, hơi xa, quá xa, gần hơn, xa nhất. This is one sign of their stative predicative behavior.
Quán mới gần hơn, nhưng quán cũ ngon hơn.
The new restaurant is closer, but the old one is better.
With a destination understood, gần and xa can stand without an expressed landmark.
Sắp đến chưa? — Gần rồi, đi thêm năm phút nữa thôi.
Are we almost there? — We’re close now; just five more minutes.
What ở adds
Ở gần/ở xa + landmark explicitly presents a location or residence relative to the landmark. Bare gần/xa directly predicates the distance relation. Both may describe the same real-world arrangement, but they package it differently.
Họ ở gần ga tàu điện.
They live near the metro station.
Bố mẹ tôi ở xa nên không về dự tiệc được.
My parents live far away, so they cannot come to the party.
This distinction becomes clear with noun modifiers. Căn hộ gần ga means “the apartment near the station”; căn hộ ở gần ga can also modify the noun but makes the locating relation more explicit. As a complete statement, add a predicate: Căn hộ đó ở gần ga.
Căn hộ gần ga đắt hơn căn hộ xa ga.
The apartment near the station is more expensive than the apartment far from it.
For a fronted existential setting, gần + landmark is enough:
Gần nhà tôi có một chợ nhỏ mở từ sáng sớm.
Near my house there is a small market that opens early in the morning.
Distance is always evaluated at a relevant scale. Gần may mean a few steps when discussing seats, a few blocks when discussing shops, or several hours when comparing cities. Vietnamese does not encode that scale in the word itself. Add a measurement, travel time, or degree expression when the listener needs operational detail. Khá gần and không xa give evaluations; chỉ mất mười phút đi bộ tells someone whether the trip is practical.
Bảo tàng không xa đâu; đi bộ khoảng mười phút là tới.
The museum isn’t far; you’ll get there in about ten minutes on foot.
| Job | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| distance predicate | ITEM + gần/xa + PLACE | Nhà tôi gần trường. |
| explicit location/residence | ITEM + ở + gần/xa + PLACE | Tôi ở gần ga. |
| noun modifier | NOUN + gần/xa + PLACE | quán gần trường |
| fronted setting | Gần + PLACE + có... | Gần trường có hiệu thuốc. |
| measured separation | A + cách + B + DISTANCE | Nhà cách trường hai cây số. |
Measuring distance with cách
Use cách when a measurement or explicit separation is central: A cách B hai cây số “A is two kilometers from B.” The distance follows the second landmark.
Khách sạn cách biển khoảng năm trăm mét.
The hotel is about five hundred meters from the sea.
Từ nhà tôi đến trường không xa, chỉ khoảng mười phút đi xe đạp.
It isn’t far from my house to school, only about ten minutes by bicycle.
The second example builds a route frame: từ nhà tôi marks the source, đến trường marks the goal, and không xa evaluates the whole route. English uses from ... to ... around the adjective; Vietnamese keeps the source and goal markers as independent relational pieces.
To ask distance, use bao xa or a cách ... bao xa construction.
Từ đây đến bến xe còn bao xa?
How far is it from here to the bus station?
Bến xe cách đây bao xa?
How far is the bus station from here?
Movement toward and away
Bare distance describes a state. Dynamic verbs express a changing relation: đến gần “come near/approach,” lại gần “come closer,” and rời xa “move away from/leave far behind.”
Đừng đứng quá gần mép sân ga.
Don’t stand too close to the edge of the platform.
Khi xe buýt đến gần trường, em gọi cho chị nhé.
When the bus gets near the school, call me.
Con thuyền dần rời xa bờ.
The boat gradually moved away from the shore.
Static ở should not be inserted between the dynamic verb and gần/xa. Compare Tôi ở gần cửa “I am/stay near the door” with Tôi lại gần cửa “I move closer to the door.”
Nonspatial extensions
Distance vocabulary extends into time, approximation, relationships, and abstraction. Gần đây can mean “near here” in a spatial frame or “recently” in a temporal frame. Context and predicate disambiguate it.
Gần đây có cây ATM nào không?
Is there an ATM near here?
Gần đây tôi ngủ không ngon.
Recently I haven’t been sleeping well.
Gần như means “almost/nearly,” not physical closeness. Xa lạ means “unfamiliar/estranged,” and gần gũi với describes personal or conceptual closeness. The added với belongs to that abstract relationship construction; it is not generally required after spatial gần.
Bản sửa đổi gần như đã hoàn thành.
The revision is almost complete.

A compact coverb contrast
The language marks source, goal, means, beneficiary, accompaniment, cause, and spatial distance separately. Several markers retain verbal uses—đến “arrive,” cho “give,” and ở “stay/live”—while gần/xa can themselves predicate a relation.
| Phrase | Relation | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ở nhà | static location | located at home |
| đến trường | goal | school as endpoint |
| từ Hà Nội | source | Hà Nội as origin |
| với bạn | accompaniment | a friend as companion |
| bằng xe buýt | means | bus as transport |
| cho em | recipient/beneficiary | you as receiver |
| trên bàn | upper relation | table as supporting landmark |
| gần bàn / xa bàn | distance | relative proximity to the table |
For cause, use vì/do trời mưa; bởi occurs in formal causal and passive-agent frames. Bên cạnh says that something is immediately beside a landmark, whereas gần merely evaluates distance. A shop can be gần trường without being directly next door.
A dialogue where distance changes the choice
— Mình chọn quán nào? Quán A ở gần trường lắm. — Nhưng quán B chỉ cách trường năm trăm mét thôi.
— Which restaurant should we choose? Restaurant A is very near the school. — But restaurant B is only five hundred meters from the school.
— Vậy quán nào bên cạnh hiệu sách? — Quán A. Quán B gần hiệu sách, nhưng không ở ngay bên cạnh.
— So which one is next to the bookshop? — Restaurant A. Restaurant B is near the bookshop, but it isn’t directly beside it.
Gần leaves the exact arrangement open; cách ... năm trăm mét measures it; bên cạnh asserts immediate adjacency. Treating all three as near would remove information needed to choose the restaurant.
Register and regional range
Physical gần/xa, measured cách, and degree combinations are neutral nationwide. Gần đây “recently” is common in both speech and writing. Cận can express “near” in learned compounds and formal labels, but it is not a casual substitute for spatial gần. Xa xôi adds an emotive sense of remoteness (literary/expressive); ordinary directions normally use plain xa.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English near to into Vietnamese.
❌ Nhà tôi gần với trường.
Unnatural for ordinary physical distance; với is unnecessary.
✅ Nhà tôi gần trường.
My house is near the school.
2. Copying English far from with từ after xa.
❌ Sân bay xa từ trung tâm.
Incorrect: spatial xa takes its landmark directly in this pattern.
✅ Sân bay xa trung tâm.
The airport is far from the center.
3. Omitting the distance relation when it matters.
❌ Căn hộ ở ga tàu điện.
This suggests the apartment is at the station.
✅ Căn hộ ở gần ga tàu điện.
The apartment is near the metro station.
4. Treating near and immediately beside as exact synonyms.
✅ Hiệu thuốc gần bệnh viện.
The pharmacy is near the hospital; this leaves the exact arrangement open.
✅ Hiệu thuốc ở bên cạnh bệnh viện.
The pharmacy is right next to the hospital.
5. Inserting static ở into a change-of-distance construction.
❌ Xe buýt đến ở gần trường rồi.
Incorrect for ‘The bus has approached the school’; ở turns the sequence into an ill-formed static frame.
✅ Xe buýt đến gần trường rồi.
The bus has reached the area near the school.
Key Takeaways
- Gần/xa + landmark can form a complete distance predicate without a preposition equivalent to English to/from.
- Add ở to foreground location or residence; use bare phrases naturally as predicates, settings, and noun modifiers.
- Use cách for measured separation and từ ... đến ... for a source-to-goal route.
- Bên cạnh means immediate adjacency; gần expresses relative proximity without fixing the geometry.
