Vietnamese đối diện expresses an opposed, facing relation. Two people can sit đối diện nhau “opposite each other,” and a café can be đối diện bệnh viện “across from the hospital.” The relation usually involves two distinguishable sides with their fronts oriented toward one another, often across a road, table, courtyard, or other gap.
English across from, opposite, and facing converge on đối diện in many contexts, but English across by itself can instead describe movement across a boundary. Vietnamese then uses verbs such as qua or sang, not đối diện. This page develops that distinction and the verbal behavior of đối diện. The surrounding relation expressed by xung quanh belongs to the next dedicated page.
The core facing relation
The landmark can follow đối diện directly or be introduced by với. With places, đối diện + landmark is compact and common. Đối diện với + landmark makes the relation explicit and is especially frequent with people or abstract problems.
Quán cà phê đối diện bệnh viện.
The café is across from the hospital.
Tôi ngồi đối diện với trưởng phòng trong buổi phỏng vấn.
I sat opposite the department head during the interview.
In a complete static location statement, ở/nằm + đối diện (với) + landmark is clear and neutral. Bare đối diện can itself function predicatively because it also behaves like a relational verb or stative expression.
Văn phòng của họ nằm đối diện với ga tàu.
Their office is located opposite the train station.
Nhà tôi và nhà cô Lan đối diện nhau.
My house and Ms. Lan’s house face each other.
With a reciprocal plural subject, nhau makes the two-way relation overt. Without nhau, a following landmark usually supplies the opposite side: Nhà tôi đối diện công viên.
Predicates, modifiers, and spatial settings
The same relational material can do different grammatical jobs. Compare a complete predicate with a postnominal modifier:
Hiệu sách ở đối diện trường.
The bookshop is across from the school.
Hiệu sách đối diện trường đóng cửa lúc chín giờ.
The bookshop across from the school closes at nine.
In the second example, đối diện trường identifies which bookshop is meant. The clause’s predicate is đóng cửa lúc chín giờ. A shorter modifier can leave the landmark understood: căn nhà đối diện “the house opposite/across the way.”
Phía đối diện names “the opposite side.” It is useful when the location on that side matters more than a mutual facing relation.
Nhà vệ sinh ở phía đối diện, ngay bên kia hành lang.
The restroom is on the opposite side, right across the corridor.
Phía đối diện có một cửa hàng tiện lợi mở suốt đêm.
On the opposite side there is a convenience store open all night.
| Communicative goal | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| locate X opposite Y | X + ở/nằm + đối diện (với) + Y | Quán nằm đối diện ga. |
| predicate a facing relation | X + đối diện (với) + Y | Nhà tôi đối diện công viên. |
| make reciprocity explicit | X và Y + đối diện nhau | Hai cửa đối diện nhau. |
| modify a noun | NOUN + đối diện + Y | quán đối diện trường |
| name the other side | phía/bên đối diện | ở phía đối diện |
Đối diện, trước, and bên kia are not synonyms
Trước + landmark locates something in the landmark’s front region. It does not by itself say that the two fronts face across a gap. Đối diện asserts opposition and facing. Bên kia + landmark simply places something on the other side; its façade or orientation may be irrelevant.
Một chiếc taxi đang đỗ trước khách sạn.
A taxi is parked in front of the hotel.
Ngân hàng nằm đối diện khách sạn, bên kia đường.
The bank is opposite the hotel, across the road.
In the first sentence, the taxi occupies the hotel’s front area. In the second, the bank and hotel form opposed landmarks, and bên kia đường explains the intervening boundary. English may use in front of loosely for both scenes, but Vietnamese lets the speaker encode the difference.
Trạm xe buýt ở bên kia đường nhưng không đối diện cổng trường.
The bus stop is on the other side of the road, but it is not opposite the school gate.
Across from versus movement across
Locative English across from corresponds readily to đối diện. Dynamic English go/run/walk across describes a path and requires a motion construction in Vietnamese.
Chúng tôi đi qua đường để đến hiệu thuốc đối diện bệnh viện.
We crossed the road to get to the pharmacy opposite the hospital.
Em sang bên kia đường rồi đợi anh trước cửa hàng nhé.
Cross to the other side of the road and wait for me in front of the shop.
Here qua đường/sang bên kia đường express the path. Đối diện bệnh viện is a static modifier identifying the pharmacy. Trước cửa hàng then specifies the waiting place relative to the shop. Translating all three English relations with đối diện would make the route incoherent.
Source and goal markers can surround the spatial frame:
Từ ga, anh đi qua quảng trường đến tòa nhà đối diện bảo tàng.
From the station, cross the square to the building opposite the museum.
Từ ga gives the source, đến tòa nhà the goal, qua quảng trường the path, and đối diện bảo tàng identifies the goal by orientation.
Face-to-face interaction and abstract confrontation
With people, đối diện can simply describe seating or direct encounter. Ngồi đối diện nhau is neutral; nói chuyện trực tiếp is often more idiomatic than forcing a literal “face-to-face” translation when physical seating is irrelevant.
Hai bên ngồi đối diện nhau để thương lượng.
The two sides sat facing each other to negotiate. (formal)
At B2 and above, đối diện với extends to challenges, risks, facts, or moral choices. The underlying image is no longer physical orientation but an unavoidable problem placed before the subject. This use is common in news, institutional, and academic prose (formal).
Do hạn hán kéo dài, nhiều địa phương đang đối diện với nguy cơ thiếu nước.
Because of the prolonged drought, many localities are facing the risk of water shortages. (formal)
Chúng ta phải đối diện với sự thật rằng kế hoạch đã thất bại.
We have to face the fact that the plan has failed.
In careful prose, đối mặt với is a close alternative for “face/confront.” Đối diện với can sound less combative and more like being placed before a condition, though actual usage overlaps. Neither abstract expression describes a literal location.
A compact map of relational roles
Vietnamese builds complex descriptions by stacking role markers rather than stretching one English-style preposition across every function. Some coverbs retain verbal meanings: ở “stay/live,” đến “arrive,” and cho “give.” Đối diện itself displays verbal behavior in đối diện với nguy cơ and predicative hai nhà đối diện nhau.
| Phrase | Relation | Core contribution |
|---|---|---|
| ở nhà | static location | home as location |
| đến trường | goal | school as endpoint |
| từ Hà Nội | source | Hà Nội as origin |
| với bạn | accompaniment | a friend as companion |
| bằng xe buýt | means | bus as transport |
| cho em | recipient/beneficiary | you as receiver |
| trên bàn | upper relation | table as supporting landmark |
| đối diện trường | facing relation | school as the opposed landmark |
Cause requires vì/do + cause, while bởi often introduces formal cause or agency. Notice the natural layering in do mưa, tôi đi bằng xe buýt đến trường: reason, means, and goal remain distinct. No form of đối diện replaces them simply because English uses short prepositions.
A dialogue where orientation resolves the ambiguity
— Hiệu thuốc ở gần bệnh viện phải không? — Đúng, nó ở đối diện cổng chính, bên kia đường.
— The pharmacy is near the hospital, right? — Yes, it is opposite the main gate, across the road.
— Có phải cửa hàng ngay trước bệnh viện không? — Không. Trước bệnh viện là bãi taxi; hiệu thuốc ở phía đối diện.
— Is it the shop right in front of the hospital? — No. The taxi rank is in front of the hospital; the pharmacy is on the opposite side.
Gần first gives rough distance. Đối diện cổng chính fixes orientation, bên kia đường fixes the side of the road, and trước bệnh viện identifies a different front region occupied by the taxi rank. Each phrase removes a different ambiguity.
Register and regional range
Spatial đối diện, reciprocal đối diện nhau, and phía đối diện are neutral and understood nationwide. Ở trỏng/ở bển and other strongly local deictic forms may occur in Southern conversation, but they are not substitutes for standard đối diện. Abstract đối diện với nguy cơ/sự thật is frequent in (formal/academic/news) prose; everyday speech may prefer gặp, phải lo, or phải đối mặt với depending on the meaning.
Common Mistakes
1. Using đối diện for movement across a road.
❌ Tôi đối diện đường để đến hiệu thuốc.
Incorrect: đối diện describes a facing relation, not a crossing path.
✅ Tôi đi qua đường để đến hiệu thuốc.
I crossed the road to get to the pharmacy.
2. Treating trước and đối diện as interchangeable.
❌ Ngân hàng ở trước khách sạn, bên kia đường.
Misleading if the bank and hotel face one another across the road; trước merely marks the hotel’s front region.
✅ Ngân hàng ở đối diện khách sạn, bên kia đường.
The bank is opposite the hotel, across the road.
3. Omitting the relational expression when facing orientation matters.
❌ Quán cà phê ở bệnh viện.
This places the café at or inside the hospital.
✅ Quán cà phê ở đối diện bệnh viện.
The café is across from the hospital.
4. Forgetting reciprocity with an understood paired subject.
❌ Hai người ngồi đối diện tôi.
This means both people sit facing me, not necessarily facing each other.
✅ Hai người ngồi đối diện nhau.
The two people sit facing each other.
5. Putting the locating verb after the relational phrase.
❌ Hiệu sách đối diện ở trường.
Incorrect word order for locating the bookshop across from the school.
✅ Hiệu sách nằm đối diện trường.
The bookshop is located across from the school.
The locating verb nằm comes before đối diện trường. The bare sequence hiệu sách đối diện trường can still be a natural predicate in context or the noun phrase “the bookshop opposite the school”; the error is placing ở between the relational phrase and its landmark.
Key Takeaways
- Đối diện marks opposed facing orientation, not merely nearness or location on another side.
- Use qua/sang for movement across; use đối diện for static “across from/opposite.”
- A full static predicate can use ở/nằm + đối diện, while bare đối diện can predicate a relation or modify a noun.
- Đối diện với extends formally from physical facing to confronting risks, facts, and difficult conditions.
