Đến and tới mark a goal: the place, time, limit, or recipient endpoint that an event reaches. Both can also be full lexical verbs meaning “arrive” or “reach.” Their double life is a useful window into Vietnamese coverbs: many words that resemble English prepositions still behave like verbs in other environments.
The source marker từ establishes where a path begins; đến/tới establishes where it ends. This page stays with endpoints. Với for accompaniment and association has its own dedicated page.
The basic goal frame
After a motion or transfer verb, use đến/tới + goal. The main verb describes the manner or type of movement; the coverbal phrase supplies its endpoint.
Ngày nào chị ấy cũng đi bộ đến trường.
She walks to school every day.
Xe buýt này chạy tới sân bay không?
Does this bus go to the airport?
Anh gửi hồ sơ đến địa chỉ này giúp em nhé.
Please send the application to this address for me.
The neutral constituent order is subject + main verb + đến/tới + goal. In đi bộ đến trường, đi bộ tells us how the person moves and đến trường identifies the endpoint. English puts to before the destination too, but that similarity should not be extended to every English preposition.
Đến and tới as full verbs
As lexical verbs, đến and tới can head the predicate and mean “arrive” or “reach.” They can appear without an overt destination when the destination is already understood.
Tôi đến rồi, bạn xuống mở cửa nhé.
I've arrived; come down and open the door.
Bao giờ xe mới tới?
When will the bus finally arrive?
Chúng tôi tới khách sạn lúc gần nửa đêm.
We reached the hotel close to midnight.
Compare the functions:
| Structure | Analysis | Example |
|---|---|---|
| đến/tới (+ place) | lexical arrival verb | Tàu đến lúc chín giờ. — The train arrives at nine. |
| motion verb + đến/tới + place | goal after a main verb | Tàu chạy đến Huế. — The train runs to Hue. |
| từ X đến/tới Y | endpoint of a path or range | từ Hà Nội đến Huế — from Hanoi to Hue |
| verb + đến/tới + time | temporal limit | làm đến sáu giờ — work until six |
In real sentences the boundary between serial verb and coverb can be gradient. You do not need to force every example into one theoretical box. What matters for use is whether đến/tới expresses the arrival event itself or adds an endpoint to another event.
Choosing between đến and tới
For ordinary goals, đến and tới are often interchangeable:
Mình đi đến bưu điện rồi rẽ trái.
Let's go to the post office and then turn left.
Mình đi tới bưu điện rồi rẽ trái.
Let's go to the post office and then turn left.
Đến is the safest neutral choice in formal writing and is very common nationwide. Tới is also standard, especially in conversation, and is particularly frequent in Southern speech (regional preference: Southern Vietnam). Northern speakers use tới too, so it is not exclusively Southern. Rhythm, collocation, and the speaker's region often determine the choice more than a change in literal meaning.
There can be a slight contextual nuance: tới often feels vividly endpoint-oriented, like “all the way up to,” while đến is the more general goal marker. Do not treat this as an absolute rule.
Nước ngập tới đầu gối.
The water rose up to knee level.
Tin đó đã đến tai giám đốc.
That news reached the director's ears.
Spatial, temporal, and abstract endpoints
A goal need not be a destination on a map. It can be a deadline, the endpoint of a range, or a degree reached.
Hôm nay tôi phải làm đến bảy giờ tối.
Today I have to work until seven in the evening.
Cửa hàng mở từ tám giờ đến mười giờ.
The shop is open from eight to ten.
Cô ấy mệt đến mức ngủ quên trên xe buýt.
She was so tired that she fell asleep on the bus.
In the last example, đến mức means “to the extent that.” It is a fixed abstract endpoint frame, not physical motion. This extension is conceptually regular: a scale is treated like a path whose limit can be reached.
Reaching a precise spatial point
Simple destination nouns need no extra location word: đến trường, tới Hà Nội, đến nhà bạn. For a point defined relative to a landmark, add a spatial word such as trước, sau, trên, dưới, trong, ngoài, or bên.
Taxi chỉ đưa chúng tôi đến trước cổng bệnh viện.
The taxi only took us to the front of the hospital gate.
Cậu mang mấy chiếc ghế ra ngoài sân nhé.
Please take those chairs out into the yard.
The second sentence naturally uses directional ra with ngoài, rather than mechanically forcing đến into every English to phrase. Vietnamese often combines directionals such as vào “enter” and ra “exit” with spatial nouns. Đến ngoài sân can mean reaching a point outside in the yard, but ra ngoài sân is normally better when the movement is explicitly outward.
For static position, use ở:
Cặp sách ở trên bàn, còn đôi giày ở dưới ghế.
The schoolbag is on the table, while the shoes are under the chair.
Here there is no endpoint being reached. The relation is location, so ở, not đến, frames it.
Place destinations and human recipients
Đến is particularly natural when a transfer is directed toward an address, institution, office, or audience conceived as a destination. A human recipient in everyday exchange, however, is usually marked with cho.
Vui lòng gửi đơn khiếu nại đến bộ phận chăm sóc khách hàng.
Please send the complaint to the customer service department.
Tôi gửi ảnh cho chị Mai rồi.
I've sent the photos to Mai already.
This is a preference grounded in how the participant is construed, not a rule about animate versus inanimate nouns. Đến người tiêu dùng is possible in formal phrases such as “bring a product to consumers,” where people are conceptualized as the endpoint of outreach. In ordinary personal transfer, cho + recipient is the dependable choice. English uses to for both, but Vietnamese distinguishes a spatial or institutional goal from a recipient more often.
The distinction also explains why nói với bác sĩ means “speak to the doctor”: the doctor is an interlocutor, not a point reached by physical motion. First identify the relation; only then choose the coverb.
Minimal contrast: one scene, different roles
| Phrase | Role | Natural question |
|---|---|---|
| ở nhà | static location | Where are you? |
| đến trường | goal | Where are you going/reaching? |
| từ Hà Nội | source | Where did you come from? |
| với bạn | accompaniment | With whom? |
| bằng xe buýt | means | How/by what means? |
| cho em | beneficiary | For whom? |
| trên bàn | spatial relation | Where relative to the table? |
A short dialogue: the endpoint matters
A: Xe này đi đến trường đại học phải không?
A: This bus goes to the university, right?
B: Không, xe chỉ đi tới ga thôi.
B: No, it only goes as far as the station.
A: Vậy từ ga tôi đi bộ đến trường được chứ?
A: Then I can walk from the station to the university, right?
B: Được, từ ga đến đó khoảng mười phút.
B: Yes, it's about ten minutes from the station to there.
Tới ga corrects the assumed endpoint: the bus reaches the station, not the university. The source–goal frame in the final line then measures the remaining path.
Common Mistakes
1. Using ở for a destination.
❌ Sáng nào tôi cũng đi bộ ở trường.
Incorrect for ‘I walk to school every morning’ — this says the walking happens at school.
✅ Sáng nào tôi cũng đi bộ đến trường.
I walk to school every morning.
Ở trường is a static/event location; đến trường is the endpoint.
2. Putting the means phrase between the subject and the motion predicate.
❌ Tôi bằng xe buýt đi đến trường.
Awkward as a neutral statement: the means phrase interrupts the subject and motion predicate.
✅ Tôi đi đến trường bằng xe buýt.
I go to school by bus.
Đi supplies the event, đến trường its goal, and bằng xe buýt its means. A means phrase can be fronted contrastively as Bằng xe buýt thì..., but that marked topic construction needs an appropriate discourse context.
3. Translating every English ‘to’ with đến.
❌ Tôi nói đến mẹ về chuyện đó.
Incorrect for ‘I spoke to my mother about that’; the mother is an addressee, not a spatial goal.
✅ Tôi nói với mẹ về chuyện đó.
I spoke with/to my mother about that.
Vietnamese chooses với for this interpersonal relation.
4. Dropping the location word from a precise goal.
❌ Tài xế đưa tôi trước cổng bệnh viện.
Incorrect in this intended goal construction — the predicate lacks a directional or goal marker.
✅ Tài xế đưa tôi đến trước cổng bệnh viện.
The driver took me to the front of the hospital gate.
Adding đến supplies the goal link; trước then expresses the endpoint's relation to the landmark.
Key Takeaways
- Đến/tới + goal marks an endpoint after a motion or transfer verb.
- Both words can also be lexical verbs meaning “arrive” or “reach.”
- Đến is the safest register-neutral written choice; tới is fully standard and especially frequent in conversation and Southern usage.
- Use từ X đến/tới Y for bounded paths and ranges, and retain spatial words when the endpoint is relative to a landmark.
