Bằng marks the means, instrument, method, vehicle, or material through which an event is carried out or an object is made. English may translate it as with, by, in, or of: viết bằng bút chì “write in pencil,” đi bằng xe buýt “go by bus,” and làm bằng gỗ “be made of wood.” The common thread is not an English word but the idea of a resource used to realize an action or form an object. Contrast this domain with companion với on the accompaniment and association page. Recipients and beneficiaries marked by cho belong on the next page.
Bằng also has a lexical predicative use meaning “equal” or “be as … as.” Distinguishing that predicate from the coverbal means phrase prevents a great deal of confusion.
Instruments and means
The neutral frame is verb (+ object) + bằng + means. The main verb names the action; bằng introduces what makes it possible.
Bạn có thể ký tên bằng bút xanh hoặc bút đen.
You can sign your name with a blue or black pen.
Tôi mở cửa bằng chìa khóa dự phòng.
I opened the door with the spare key.
Chị ấy thanh toán bằng thẻ ngân hàng.
She paid by bank card.
English uses with for both an instrument and a companion. Vietnamese normally contrasts bằng dao “with a knife” and với anh Nam “with Nam.” A knife is a means; Nam is a co-participant.
Vehicles and channels
Transport is treated as means, so bằng + vehicle normally follows the motion predicate or its goal phrase.
Ngày nào tôi cũng đi làm bằng xe buýt.
I go to work by bus every day.
Từ Hà Nội đến Hải Phòng, đi bằng tàu hỏa cũng tiện.
From Hanoi to Hai Phong, traveling by train is convenient too.
The location relations remain independent: từ Hà Nội is the source, đến Hải Phòng the goal, and bằng tàu hỏa the means. Vietnamese usually puts the means phrase after the core movement and destination, although it may be fronted for contrast:
Bằng xe máy thì nhanh hơn, nhưng đi xe buýt đỡ mệt hơn.
Going by motorbike is faster, but taking the bus is less tiring.
Initial bằng xe máy is topical and contrastive. In everyday speech, vehicle nouns also occur directly after đi—đi xe buýt, đi tàu, đi máy bay—without bằng. Both patterns are natural, but their structures differ: đi xe buýt lexicalizes the mode of travel, while đi đến trường bằng xe buýt explicitly adds the means to a larger event.
Channels of communication can also be means:
Anh gửi hợp đồng cho tôi bằng email nhé.
Please send me the contract by email.
In casual Vietnamese, qua email “via email” is also common. Bằng email emphasizes the selected means; qua email conceptualizes email as a channel.
Specific and nonspecific instruments
A bare noun after bằng often names a type of instrument or medium: viết bằng bút chì “write in pencil,” ăn bằng đũa “eat with chopsticks.” When a particular instrument matters, Vietnamese can add a classifier and modifier.
Tôi mở thùng bằng cái kéo ở trong ngăn bàn.
I opened the box with the pair of scissors in the desk drawer.
Ở nhà tôi, mọi người thường ăn cơm bằng đũa.
In my home, people usually eat with chopsticks.
The classifier cái helps identify a specific pair of scissors; it is not required when kéo simply names the kind of tool. This resembles the broader Vietnamese contrast between a type-level bare noun and a referential classified noun. Bằng itself does not determine definiteness.
Negation normally scopes over the event or over a contrastive means phrase. Tôi không trả bằng tiền mặt means “I don't pay in cash,” often implying another means of payment. For an explicit alternative, coordinate the two methods:
Tôi không thanh toán bằng tiền mặt; tôi chuyển khoản.
I don't pay in cash; I make a bank transfer.
Methods: bằng cách + clause
When the means is an action rather than a concrete object, use bằng cách + verb phrase “by means of/by doing.”
Cô ấy cải thiện phát âm bằng cách nghe podcast mỗi ngày.
She improved her pronunciation by listening to podcasts every day.
Chúng tôi tiết kiệm điện bằng cách tắt điều hòa trước khi ra về.
We save electricity by turning off the air conditioner before leaving.
The noun cách means “way/method.” It packages the following action as the method used. A bare bằng + verb is generally not the neutral way to translate English by doing.
Material: what something is made of
Use làm bằng + material when the material remains identifiable as what constitutes the object.
Cái bàn này được làm bằng gỗ tái chế.
This table is made of recycled wood.
Chiếc nhẫn được làm bằng bạc, không phải bằng vàng.
The ring is made of silver, not gold.
In informal descriptions, noun + bằng + material is also possible: cái ghế bằng nhựa “the plastic chair.” With an explicit predicate, được làm bằng is clearer.
Compare bằng with từ:
| Frame | Perspective | Example |
|---|---|---|
| làm bằng + material | material constituting the finished object | bàn làm bằng gỗ — a table made of wood |
| làm từ + source material | input transformed into a product | giấy làm từ bột gỗ — paper made from wood pulp |
The distinction is a matter of construal, not chemistry alone. Bằng presents the substance as the object's material; từ looks backward to its origin or raw input.
Lexical bằng: equality and comparison
As a lexical predicate, bằng means “equal” or “be equal to.” It does not introduce an instrument.
Hai cộng ba bằng năm.
Two plus three equals five.
Em trai tôi cao bằng tôi rồi.
My younger brother is already as tall as I am.
Kinh nghiệm thực tế đôi khi quan trọng bằng bằng cấp.
Practical experience is sometimes as important as qualifications.
In comparison, the frame adjective + bằng + comparison standard means “as … as.” In cao bằng tôi, bằng tôi supplies the standard matched. This is related to equality, not to the instrument/means use.
One relational system, not one-to-one translations
| Phrase | Relation | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| ở nhà | location | at home |
| đến trường | goal | to school |
| từ Hà Nội | source | from Hanoi |
| với bạn | accompaniment | with a friend |
| bằng xe buýt | means | by bus |
| cho em | beneficiary/recipient | for/to you |
| trên bàn | spatial relation | on the table |
For complex locations, a coverb may combine with a spatial word: ở trên bàn, ở dưới cầu, ở trong nhà, ở ngoài sân, ở trước cửa, ở sau trường. For causes, choose structures with vì, do, or bởi, not bằng: Chuyến bay bị hoãn do thời tiết xấu “The flight was delayed because of bad weather.” English by can mark a means, an agent, a deadline, or a cause; only the means reading regularly points to bằng.
A short dialogue: changing the means
A: Mai cậu đến trường bằng xe buýt à?
A: Are you going to school by bus tomorrow?
B: Không, tớ đi cùng chị bằng xe máy.
B: No, I'm going by motorbike with my older sister.
A: Thế cậu gửi tài liệu cho tớ bằng email nhé.
A: Then send me the documents by email, okay?
B: Được, tối nay tớ gửi.
B: Sure, I'll send them tonight.
The first two lines contrast bằng xe buýt and bằng xe máy, changing the means of travel. Với chị separately marks the companion. In the third line, cho tớ marks the recipient while bằng email marks the transmission channel.
Common Mistakes
1. Using với for an instrument.
❌ Tôi cắt bánh với con dao nhỏ.
Unnatural for ‘I cut the cake with the small knife’; với suggests association, not an instrument.
✅ Tôi cắt bánh bằng con dao nhỏ.
I cut the cake with the small knife.
The knife is used to perform the cutting, so bằng repairs the semantic role.
2. Putting a bare verb after bằng.
❌ Tôi học từ mới bằng đọc báo.
Incorrect neutral structure for ‘by reading newspapers.’
✅ Tôi học từ mới bằng cách đọc báo.
I learn new words by reading newspapers.
Cách turns đọc báo into an explicit method.
3. Translating agentive English by as bằng.
❌ Cuốn sách này được viết bằng Nguyễn Nhật Ánh.
Incorrect — the author is an agent, not an instrument.
✅ Cuốn sách này do Nguyễn Nhật Ánh viết.
This book was written by Nguyễn Nhật Ánh.
Agentive by is commonly expressed with do or bởi; bằng is reserved for means/material here.
4. Omitting the main event predicate.
❌ Tôi bằng xe buýt đến trường mỗi ngày.
Incorrect neutral order; bằng xe buýt cannot replace the motion predicate.
✅ Tôi đến trường bằng xe buýt mỗi ngày.
I get to school by bus every day.
Đến trường supplies the movement and goal; bằng xe buýt adds its means.
