A formal Vietnamese welcome is not ordinary conversation made longer. It creates an institutionally authorized we, publicly classifies the guests, and moves through predictable acts: salutation, welcome, acknowledgment, shared purpose, wishes, and invitation. The original speech below is written for this page; it imitates a contemporary academic ceremony without borrowing from a real speech. The literary pastiche is analyzed separately.
The complete speech
Context: A department head welcomes a visiting university delegation. The style is (formal) and suitable for a spoken ceremony; it is warmer and less bureaucratic than an administrative notice.
Sau đây, xin trân trọng kính mời Giáo sư Nguyễn Minh An phát biểu.
Distinguished delegates, respected teachers, and students: on behalf of the university, I warmly welcome the delegation from Hòa Bình University, who are visiting us for discussions today. Your presence is not only an honor for the university but also opens an opportunity for both sides to share experience, strengthen cooperation, and build practical programs for students. We sincerely thank you for devoting time to this visit, and we believe that today's discussions will lay the foundation for a lasting relationship. I wish you good health and every success in today's meeting. I now respectfully invite Professor Nguyễn Minh An to speak.
The translation is idiomatic, not mechanically word-for-word. It compresses the repeated chúc into one English wish and renders đến thăm và làm việc với chúng tôi as “visiting us for discussions”; the repetition and the làm việc collocation are conventional in Vietnamese ceremonial speech.
The speech as a sequence of actions
| Span | Public action | Grammatical signal |
|---|---|---|
| Kính thưa... | constitutes the audience | respect marker + ranked coordinated groups |
| Thay mặt... | authorizes the speaker | institutional frame before tôi |
| tôi xin... chào mừng | performs the welcome | xin softens and ceremonializes the act |
| không chỉ... mà còn... | raises the visit's significance | paired additive construction |
| cảm ơn... và tin rằng... | acknowledges and projects | parallel predicates with one subject |
| Kính chúc...; xin... kính mời... | closes and transfers the floor | formulaic wishes and invitation |
The ordering matters. Beginning with future cooperation before recognizing the audience would sound administratively efficient but ceremonially abrupt. These small choices cooperate across the whole discourse.
Line 1: constructing the audience
Kính thưa quý vị đại biểu, quý thầy cô và các bạn sinh viên.
Distinguished delegates, respected teachers, and students.
Kính contributes respectful stance; thưa announces respectful speech to someone. Together, kính thưa is a conventional ceremonial opener (formal), not a literal predicate meaning “respectfully report.” Quý is an honorific modifier before a group label. The list descends from official guests to teachers and students, reflecting ceremonial precedence.
There is no finite English-style clause, yet nothing is grammatically missing. The vocative performs the opening. Các bạn sinh viên is relatively inclusive and warm; quý sinh viên would be possible in highly formal promotional language but would change the tone.
Line 2: authority, stance, and the guest event
Thay mặt nhà trường, tôi xin nhiệt liệt chào mừng đoàn đại biểu Trường Đại học Hòa Bình đã đến thăm và làm việc với chúng tôi hôm nay.
On behalf of the university, I warmly welcome the delegation from Hòa Bình University, who have come to visit and meet with us today.
Thay mặt nhà trường is a scene-setting authority phrase: the speaker's tôi speaks as an officeholder, not merely as a private individual. Xin before a performative such as chào mừng does not ask permission in the ordinary sense. It marks ceremonially controlled deference. Nhiệt liệt “warmly/enthusiastically” is common (formal) evaluative vocabulary.
The sequence đoàn đại biểu + institution + đã đến... contains a head noun, an identifying institutional name, and a following clause. Đã presents arrival as realized and relevant to the present event; it is not automatic past-tense agreement. The coordinated đến thăm và làm việc describes the delegation's visit as both relational and substantive.
Line 3: paired elevation and parallel goals
Sự hiện diện của quý vị không chỉ là niềm vinh dự đối với nhà trường mà còn mở ra cơ hội để hai bên cùng chia sẻ kinh nghiệm, tăng cường hợp tác và xây dựng những chương trình thiết thực cho sinh viên.
Your presence is not only an honor for the university but also opens an opportunity for both sides to share experience, strengthen cooperation, and build practical programs for students.
Turning hiện diện “be present” into sự hiện diện “presence” produces an abstract nominal style characteristic of formal prose. The paired frame không chỉ X mà còn Y means “not only X but also Y.” Its two arms need not share the same internal category here: the first has là + noun phrase, while the second has the verb mở ra. They share the topic sự hiện diện của quý vị.
After để, the overt actor is hai bên “both parties.” Cùng marks joint participation and scopes over three coordinated goals: chia sẻ, tăng cường, and xây dựng. Vietnamese does not need to repeat hai bên cùng before every verb. Repetition would be possible for rhetorical emphasis, but it is not structurally required.
Lines 4–5: gratitude, projection, wishes, and handover
Chúng tôi trân trọng cảm ơn quý vị đã dành thời gian cho chuyến thăm này và tin rằng các cuộc trao đổi trong ngày hôm nay sẽ đặt nền móng cho một mối quan hệ lâu dài.
We sincerely thank you for devoting time to this visit, and we believe that today's discussions will lay the foundation for a lasting relationship.
Chúng tôi excludes the guests: it denotes the host institution. Trân trọng is (formal) respectful stance. The same subject controls both cảm ơn and tin, although English naturally repeats we in some versions. Sẽ presents the projected result; unlike English will, it is not required merely because the event is future.
Kính chúc quý vị sức khỏe, chúc buổi làm việc thành công tốt đẹp.
I wish you good health and every success for the meeting.
The speaker is omitted because the ceremonial formula makes the wisher recoverable. The two chúc clauses are balanced: recipient + wished-for good, then event + desired result. Thành công tốt đẹp is a conventional formal collocation; translating both words separately as “succeed beautifully well” would be wrong.
Sau đây, xin trân trọng kính mời Giáo sư Nguyễn Minh An phát biểu.
I now respectfully invite Professor Nguyễn Minh An to speak.
Sau đây signals the next program item. The stack xin trân trọng kính mời is deliberately ceremonial: xin frames the performance, trân trọng marks esteem, kính marks deference, and mời performs the invitation. Such stacking is appropriate (formal) here but comically inflated at a family meal.
Minimal contrast: same event, different social frame
Xin trân trọng kính mời Giáo sư Nguyễn Minh An phát biểu.
I respectfully invite Professor Nguyễn Minh An to speak.
Mời thầy An nói vài lời ạ.
Professor An, please say a few words.
Anh An nói tiếp nhé.
An, you go ahead and speak next, okay?
The first belongs on a ceremonial stage. The second is respectful but smaller-scale, perhaps a department meeting. The third is (informal) peer coordination. The grammatical core “invite/addressee/speak” remains; title, performative weight, particle, and relationship jointly change the act.
Two useful rewrites
Warm workplace welcome (neutral-respectful):
Thay mặt cả nhóm, em chào mừng anh chị đến văn phòng. Hôm nay mình cùng trao đổi thẳng thắn để thống nhất kế hoạch nhé.
On behalf of the whole team, welcome to our office. Today, let's have an open discussion and agree on the plan.
Here em–anh chị makes the hierarchy relational, and mình... nhé creates collaboration. The speech is no longer ceremonial.
Southern conversational hosting (regional: Southern Vietnam):
Mừng cô chú tới chơi. Cô chú cứ tự nhiên, lát nữa mình vừa ăn vừa nói chuyện nha.
We're glad you've come to visit. Please make yourselves at home; in a little while we'll eat and chat at the same time, okay?
Southern nha corresponds pragmatically to nhé in much northern speech. This is household hospitality, not a regional version of an official speech; the setting and participant roles change with the form.
Comprehension and analysis prompts
- Who belongs to chúng tôi, and who is excluded?
- Which realized event does đã locate, and which projected outcome does sẽ frame?
- What is the shared topic of là niềm vinh dự and mở ra cơ hội?
- Remove thay mặt nhà trường. How does the speaker's authority change?
- Rewrite the handover for two close colleagues without ceremonial stacking.
Common Mistakes
1. Flattening every address form into “you”
❌ Tôi chào mừng bạn đến làm việc với chúng tôi.
Unsuited to a formal delegation: bạn makes the institutional guests sound like generic peers.
✅ Tôi xin nhiệt liệt chào mừng quý vị đến làm việc với chúng tôi.
I warmly welcome you to meet with us.
Quý vị encodes respected plural audience status; the repair is social grammar, not ornament.
2. Treating omitted subjects as broken sentences
❌ Kính chúc quý vị là sức khỏe, chúc buổi làm việc là thành công.
Incorrect — là cannot be inserted between chúc and the wished-for good or before this result expression.
✅ Kính chúc quý vị mạnh khỏe, chúc buổi làm việc thành công.
I wish you good health and every success for the meeting.
The speech situation recovers the speaker across the balanced clauses.
3. Translating particles and formulas word by word
❌ Tôi yêu cầu kính mời Giáo sư An nói.
Incorrect: xin kính mời is not a literal request-demand formula.
✅ Xin trân trọng kính mời Giáo sư An phát biểu.
I respectfully invite Professor An to speak.
Phát biểu is the expected (formal) verb for giving remarks; nói is broader and less ceremonial.
4. Using ceremonial density in casual hospitality
❌ Xin trân trọng kính mời mẹ dùng bữa.
Over-formal for an ordinary family meal unless used jokingly.
✅ Mẹ ăn cơm đi ạ.
Mum, please eat.
The correction keeps downward/upward family address and ạ, but removes institutional performance language.
Key Takeaways
- A welcome speech progresses through public actions; its order is part of its grammar as discourse.
- Institutional chúng tôi, respectful audience labels, predicate chains, and ceremonial formulas must be interpreted together.
- Omitted participants remain recoverable, while đã and sẽ express viewpoints rather than automatic tense agreement.
- Register is structural: a correct ceremonial formula can still be socially wrong at an ordinary family meal.
