Thai เห็น is the invariant verb for seeing, noticing, recognizing visually, or regarding something in a particular way. Unlike attention verb ดู “look/watch,” เห็น normally presents visual access or the result of perception. It also extends into judgment: เห็นว่า... “consider/observe that...,” เห็นด้วย “agree,” and formal เห็นสมควร “deem appropriate.”
English see covers appointments, understanding, and social visits as well as vision. Thai does not copy all of those uses with เห็น. This page follows the Thai frames that actually contain the headword.
Visual access and noticed events
The experiencer precedes เห็น, and the perceived entity follows directly. No preposition equivalent to English at is needed.
| Use | Frame | Natural model |
|---|---|---|
| see an entity | experiencer + เห็น + object | เห็นป้าย |
| notice an event | experiencer + เห็น + participant + action | เห็นเด็กวิ่ง |
| visual accessibility | มองเห็น + object | มองเห็นภูเขา |
| recognize/understand a picture | เห็นภาพ | เริ่มเห็นภาพรวม |
| judge that... | เห็นว่า + proposition | เห็นว่าวิธีนี้เหมาะ |
จากหน้าต่างห้องนี้ผมเห็นแม่น้ำครับ
chak natang hong ni phom hen maenam khrap
From this room's window I can see the river. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; visual access)
เมื่อกี้ฉันเห็นเด็กทำกระเป๋าตกค่ะ
muea ki chan hen dek tham krapao tok kha
Just now I saw a child drop a bag. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; perceived participant plus action)
ถอยไปนิดหนึ่งครับ ผมมองไม่เห็นป้าย
thoi pai nit nueng khrap phom mong mai hen pai
Move back a little; I can't see the sign. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; failed visual access)
The event frame เห็น + participant + action does not make the action an infinitive. In เห็นเด็กทำกระเป๋าตก, เด็ก is both what enters the speaker's visual field and the understood actor of ทำ. The broader construction is developed on perception complements.
An invariant-form matrix
เห็น never changes with subject or time. Progressive กำลังเห็น is restricted: it is most acceptable when understanding, evidence, or a visual pattern is gradually emerging, not for a punctual accidental sighting.
| Environment | Thai model | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| ผม + past context | เมื่อวานผมเห็นคุณนิด | เมื่อวาน supplies past time |
| ฉัน + unfolding recognition | ฉันกำลังเริ่มเห็นภาพรวมชัดขึ้น | กำลังเริ่ม and ชัดขึ้น create gradual emergence |
| เขา + newly achieved access | เขาเห็นข้อความแล้ว | แล้ว presents a newly reached result |
| พวกเรา + predicted access | พวกเราจะเห็นทะเลจากห้อง | จะ presents a later prediction |
| เขา + negative access | เขาไม่เห็นทางออก | ไม่ precedes เห็น |
เมื่อวานผมเห็นคุณนิดที่สถานีรถไฟครับ
muea wan phom hen khun nit thi sathani rotfai khrap
Yesterday I saw Khun Nit at the railway station. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังเริ่มเห็นภาพรวมของปัญหาชัดขึ้นค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang roem hen phap ruam khong panha chat khuen kha
I'm beginning to see the overall picture of the problem more clearly now. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; unfolding recognition)
เขาเห็นข้อความนั้นแล้วครับ
khao hen khokhwam nan laeo khrap
He has now seen that message. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; newly achieved access)
พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะเห็นทะเลจากห้องพักค่ะ
phrung ni phuak rao cha hen thale chak hong phak kha
Tomorrow we'll be able to see the sea from our room. (ordinary polite prediction, female speaker)
For a simple current sight, plain เห็น is normally enough: ตอนนี้เห็นรถแล้ว. Do not add กำลัง mechanically just because English says “am seeing.” Time and aspect belong to the meaning of the whole situation.
เห็นว่า and viewpoint judgments
With ว่า + proposition, เห็น moves from direct vision toward evidence-based observation, opinion, or evaluation. Context determines how strongly the speaker commits.
ผมเห็นว่าวิธีนี้ประหยัดเวลากว่าครับ
phom hen wa withi ni prayat wela kwa khrap
I consider this method more time-efficient. (formal-polite assessment, male speaker)
คณะกรรมการเห็นว่าโครงการควรเริ่มเดือนหน้าค่ะ
khana kammakan hen wa khrongkan khuan roem duean na kha
The committee considers that the project should begin next month. (formal meeting report, female voice)
จากข้อมูลล่าสุด เราเห็นว่ายอดขายเริ่มฟื้นครับ
chak khomun lasut rao hen wa yot khai roem fuen khrap
From the latest data, we can see that sales are beginning to recover. (formal business analysis, male speaker)
This use can be evidential as well as opinionated: the evidence licenses the conclusion. It is not the same as deliberately looking at the data, although looking may provide the evidence. See Thai cognition predicates for the wider mental-state system.
Agreement, classification, and lexical combinations
Several frequent combinations must be learned as wholes.
| Combination | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| เห็นด้วย | agree | neutral |
| เห็นต่าง | hold a different view | neutral to formal |
| เห็นว่า... | consider/observe that... | neutral to formal |
| เห็นเป็น... | see or regard as... | neutral |
| เห็นสมควร | deem appropriate | formal/bureaucratic |
| เห็นใจ | sympathize, understand another's difficulty | neutral |
| เห็นชอบ | approve | formal/institutional |
ฉันเห็นด้วยกับข้อเสนอของทีมค่ะ
chan hen duai kap khosanoe khong thim kha
I agree with the team's proposal. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
ผมเห็นต่างเรื่องงบประมาณครับ
phom hen tang rueang ngoppraman khrap
I have a different view on the budget issue. (formal-polite discussion, male speaker)
ที่ประชุมเห็นชอบแผนฉบับแก้ไขแล้วค่ะ
thi prachum hen chop phaen chabap kae khai laeo kha
The meeting has approved the revised plan. (formal institutional report, female voice)
ฉันเห็นใจลูกค้าที่ต้องรอนานค่ะ
chan hen chai luk kha thi tong ro nan kha
I sympathize with the customer who has had to wait a long time. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
In เห็น + object + เป็น + category, the speaker classifies or regards the object in a particular way. This is a judgment frame rather than an inflected form of เห็น.
เขาเห็นฉันเป็นเพื่อนค่ะ
khao hen chan pen phuean kha
He regards me as a friend. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
เห็นด้วย takes กับ + viewpoint/person when that material is overt. This is a property of the collocation, not a general preposition after visual เห็น.
Negation, accessibility, and omission
ไม่เห็น + object denies perception or access. ไม่ได้เห็น + object denies that a seeing event occurred. เห็นไม่ได้ is possible where seeing something is impossible or prohibited, but ordinary visibility failure often uses มองไม่เห็น.
เมื่อคืนฉันไม่ได้เห็นเหตุการณ์ตอนเริ่มค่ะ
muea khuen chan mai dai hen hetkan ton roem kha
Last night I did not see the event when it began. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; event denied)
หมอกหนามากครับ มองไม่เห็นถนนข้างหน้า
mok na mak khrap mong mai hen thanon khang na
The fog is very thick; I can't see the road ahead. (ordinary polite warning, male speaker; failed access)
An object can disappear when active: เห็นกุญแจไหม — เห็นแล้วค่ะ “Have you seen the key? — Yes.” In isolation, เห็นแล้ว only means that some contextually understood perception has now occurred.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
จากตรงนี้เห็นหมายเลขรถไหมคะ
chak trong ni hen mailek rot mai kha
Can you see the vehicle number from here? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังไม่เห็นครับ รถอยู่ไกลเกินไป
yang mai hen khrap rot yu klai koen pai
Not yet; the vehicle is too far away. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ลองขยับไปข้างหน้าหน่อยไหมคะ
long khayap pai khang na noi mai kha
Shall we move forward a little? (ordinary polite suggestion, female speaker)
ตอนนี้เห็นชัดแล้วครับ
ton ni hen chat laeo khrap
Now I can see it clearly. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; object recoverably omitted)
Common Mistakes
1. Using ดู for an accidental sighting
❌ เมื่อกี้ฉันดูรถชนกันค่ะ
Wrong for an accidental sighting; ดู implies deliberate watching in this context.
✅ เมื่อกี้ฉันเห็นรถชนกันค่ะ
muea ki chan hen rot chon kan kha
I just saw two vehicles collide. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Using เห็น for the activity of watching
❌ เมื่อคืนผมเห็นละครสามตอนครับ
Wrong for deliberately watching three episodes; เห็น foregrounds perceptual access.
✅ เมื่อคืนผมดูละครสามตอนครับ
muea khuen phom du lakhon sam ton khrap
Last night I watched three episodes of a drama. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Adding กับ before a visual object
❌ ผมเห็นกับคุณนิดที่สถานีครับ
Incorrect visual frame—an entity seen follows เห็น directly.
✅ ผมเห็นคุณนิดที่สถานีครับ
phom hen khun nit thi sathani khrap
I saw Khun Nit at the station. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
4. Turning a perceived event into a prospective relative
❌ ฉันเห็นเด็กที่จะข้ามถนนค่ะ
Wrong for ‘saw the child crossing’; ที่จะ makes เด็กที่จะข้ามถนน a prospective description.
✅ ฉันเห็นเด็กกำลังข้ามถนนค่ะ
chan hen dek kamlang kham thanon kha
I saw a child crossing the road. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
5. Confusing event denial with failed visual access
❌ จากที่นั่งนี้ผมไม่ได้เห็นเวทีครับ
Wrong for a present visibility problem; this most readily denies that a seeing event occurred.
✅ จากที่นั่งนี้ผมมองไม่เห็นเวทีครับ
chak thi nang ni phom mong mai hen wethi khrap
From this seat I can't see the stage. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; failed visual access)
Key Takeaways
- เห็น + object/event presents visual access or noticed perception; ดู presents directed attention.
- เห็น + participant + action allows the perceived participant to act in the following predicate without an infinitive marker.
- เห็นว่า introduces an observation or judgment, while เห็นด้วย, เห็นใจ, and เห็นชอบ are lexical combinations.
- Progressive กำลังเห็น is restricted to unfolding recognition or emerging evidence; plain เห็น handles ordinary current perception.
- Negation position distinguishes event denial, visual failure, and other scope readings; the verb itself remains invariant.
