ดื่ม: drink

Thai ดื่ม is the invariant verb that explicitly means “drink.” It takes a beverage as its object, allows that object to disappear when the drink is recoverable, and combines with ordinary time, aspect, modal, and negative expressions without changing form. Everyday Central Thai also uses กิน with water and other drinks. The choice is one of lexical explicitness and register—not two different conjugations and not a ban on กินน้ำ.

The core beverage frame

The central pattern is drinker + ดื่ม + beverage. Thai places no article before a mass beverage and does not add a verb ending for person. A counted serving follows the normal noun–number–classifier pattern: กาแฟสองแก้ว “two cups of coffee.”

ตอนเช้าผมดื่มกาแฟไม่ใส่น้ำตาลครับ

ton chao phom duem kafae mai sai namtan khrap

In the morning I drink coffee without sugar. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ฉันดื่มนมอุ่นก่อนนอนค่ะ

chan duem nom un kon non kha

I drink warm milk before bed. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

อากาศร้อนแบบนี้ควรดื่มน้ำบ่อย ๆ ครับ

akat ron baep ni khuan duem nam boi boi khrap

In weather this hot, you should drink water often. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker)

น้ำ, ชา, กาแฟ, นม, and น้ำผลไม้ are straightforward beverage objects. Food that is normally eaten keeps กิน: กินข้าว, not ดื่มข้าว. Medicine is also conventionally กินยา or formal-polite รับประทานยา, rather than a general frame ดื่มยา.

💡
Choose ดื่ม for an explicitly beverage-focused predicate. Use the conventional lexical verb for the object: กินยา for medicine and กินข้าว for a meal, even though English might suggest a liquid action.

An invariant-form matrix

The headword ดื่ม never changes with the subject. Time and aspect expressions occur around it.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
past contextเมื่อเช้าผมดื่มกาแฟเมื่อเช้า supplies past time
ongoing eventฉันกำลังดื่มชากำลัง presents drinking in progress
new completed stateเขาดื่มน้ำแล้วแล้ว presents completion as relevant now
prospective eventพวกเราจะดื่มน้ำผลไม้จะ presents an intended event
negative habitเขาไม่ดื่มกาแฟไม่ before ดื่ม negates the habit

เมื่อเช้าผมดื่มกาแฟแก้วเล็กที่สถานีครับ

muea chao phom duem kafae kaeo lek thi sathani khrap

This morning I had a small coffee at the station. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from context)

ฉันกำลังดื่มชาขิงอยู่ค่ะ

chan kamlang duem cha khing yu kha

I'm drinking ginger tea. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; ongoing viewpoint)

เขาดื่มน้ำไปสองแก้วแล้วครับ

khao duem nam pai song kaeo laeo khrap

He has drunk two glasses of water already. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; accumulated amount and current relevance)

หลังวิ่งพวกเราจะดื่มน้ำมะพร้าวค่ะ

lang wing phuak rao cha duem nam maphrao kha

After the run, we'll drink coconut water. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; prospective event)

There is no form meaning “drank” or “will drink.” เมื่อเช้า, กำลัง...อยู่, แล้ว, and จะ contribute temporal or aspectual viewpoints while ดื่ม remains unchanged. The time-without-conjugation page explains why these markers are not one-for-one English tenses.

ดื่ม and conversational กิน

Both ดื่มน้ำ and กินน้ำ are current Central Thai. กินน้ำ is very common in ordinary conversation and family speech. ดื่มน้ำ explicitly selects the drinking sense and therefore fits easily in neutral careful speech, health advice, service language, and writing. It is misleading to call the first wrong or the second exclusively formal.

ExpressionTypical effectRegister
กินน้ำordinary conversational “drink water”informal to neutral conversational
ดื่มน้ำexplicit “drink water,” easy in advice and service languageneutral to formal-polite
กินกาแฟordinary conversational “have coffee”informal to neutral conversational
ดื่มกาแฟfocus on drinking coffeeneutral
ดื่มเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์consume alcoholic beveragesformal/administrative or health register

ระหว่างพักกินน้ำก่อนก็ได้นะครับ

rawang phak kin nam kon ko dai na khrap

During the break, you can have some water first. (ordinary conversational suggestion, male speaker; natural กินน้ำ)

ก่อนตรวจเลือดกรุณาดื่มน้ำเปล่าเท่านั้นค่ะ

kon truat lueat karuna duem nam plao thaonan kha

Before the blood test, please drink plain water only. (formal-polite healthcare instruction, female speaker)

The meaning remains beverage consumption in both settings. ดื่ม does not carry the broad conventional “consume electricity,” “take time,” or “corrode” extensions found with กิน; see the กิน reference.

Collocations, amount, and omission

CollocationNatural meaningRegister

วันนี้ผมดื่มน้ำไม่พอครับ เลยปวดหัว

wan ni phom duem nam mai pho khrap loei puat hua

I haven't drunk enough water today, so I have a headache. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

In a question–answer pair, a repeated beverage can disappear: ดื่มน้ำหรือยังคะ — ดื่มแล้วครับ “Have you drunk water yet? — Yes.” The omission is licensed by the question. A bare ดื่มไหม at a social event may ask whether someone drinks alcohol, because that topic can be culturally recoverable; do not assume that special contextual reading in every setting.

💡
Object omission changes with context. ดื่มแล้ว can mean “I've drunk it” after a named beverage, while bare ดื่มไหม may concern alcohol in a social setting. Restore the object whenever the intended drink is not shared knowledge.

Negation and possibility

ไม่ดื่ม rejects the activity or describes abstention. ไม่ได้ดื่ม denies that a drinking event occurred. ดื่มไม่ได้ says drinking is impossible or not permitted.

ช่วงนี้ฉันไม่ดื่มกาแฟหลังบ่ายสองค่ะ

chuang ni chan mai duem kafae lang bai song kha

These days I don't drink coffee after two in the afternoon. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; habit under negation)

เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้ดื่มอะไรเลยครับ

muea chao phom mai dai duem arai loei khrap

I didn't drink anything at all this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; occurrence denied)

น้ำขวดนี้เปิดมาหลายวันแล้ว ดื่มไม่ได้ค่ะ

nam khuat ni poet ma lai wan laeo duem mai dai kha

This bottle has been open for several days; it isn't safe to drink. (ordinary polite warning, female speaker; situational impossibility)

Thai does not insert an auxiliary equivalent of English do before ไม่. Nor is the adjacent ได้ an infinitive marker: its position after ดื่ม gives a possibility reading.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

รับเครื่องดื่มอะไรดีคะ

rap khrueang duem arai di kha

What would you like to drink? (ordinary polite service question, female speaker)

ผมขอชาร้อนไม่ใส่น้ำตาลครับ

phom kho cha ron mai sai namtan khrap

I'd like hot tea without sugar. (ordinary polite service reply, male speaker)

รับนมเพิ่มไหมคะ

rap nom phoem mai kha

Would you like extra milk? (ordinary polite service question, female speaker)

ไม่เป็นไรครับ ผมดื่มแบบนี้ได้

mai pen rai khrap phom duem baep ni dai

No, thank you; I can drink it like this. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding English auxiliary do to a negative

❌ ผมทำไม่ดื่มกาแฟครับ

Incorrect—ทำ is not inserted as an auxiliary before ไม่.

✅ ผมไม่ดื่มกาแฟตอนเย็นครับ

phom mai duem kafae ton yen khrap

I don't drink coffee in the evening. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Copying English number order

❌ วันนี้ฉันดื่มสองแก้วชาเย็นค่ะ

Incorrect—an ordinary counted serving uses beverage + number + classifier.

✅ วันนี้ฉันดื่มชาเย็นสองแก้วค่ะ

wan ni chan duem cha yen song kaeo kha

Today I drank two glasses of iced tea. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Using ดื่ม for a meal

❌ เช้านี้ลูกดื่มข้าวต้มค่ะ

Wrong for eating rice porridge; ดื่ม selects a beverage, while ข้าวต้ม is food.

✅ เช้านี้ลูกกินข้าวต้มหนึ่งถ้วยค่ะ

chao ni luk kin khao tom nueng thuai kha

This morning the child ate a bowl of rice porridge. (ordinary polite family speech, female speaker)

4. Using ดื่ม with medicine tablets

❌ ก่อนนอนผมดื่มยาแก้แพ้ชนิดเม็ดครับ

Incorrect—tablets are conventionally taken with กินยา or formal-polite รับประทานยา, not ดื่ม.

✅ ก่อนนอนผมกินยาแก้แพ้หนึ่งเม็ดครับ

kon non phom kin ya kae phae nueng met khrap

Before bed I take one allergy tablet. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

5. Confusing event denial with impossibility

❌ เมื่อเช้าฉันดื่มน้ำไม่ได้ค่ะ

Wrong for an intended simple ‘I didn't drink water’; this normally presents inability or impossibility.

✅ เมื่อเช้าฉันไม่ได้ดื่มน้ำค่ะ

muea chao chan mai dai duem nam kha

I didn't drink water this morning. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; occurrence denied)

Key Takeaways

  • ดื่ม is an invariant beverage verb; subjects and time expressions do not change its form.
  • ดื่ม + beverage is explicit and neutral-careful, while กินน้ำ is also natural conversational Central Thai.
  • Beverage objects may disappear only when discourse makes them recoverable.
  • ไม่ดื่ม, ไม่ได้ดื่ม, and ดื่มไม่ได้ differ in scope.
  • ดื่ม does not inherit the conventional resource, space, time, and corrosion meanings of กิน.
