ที in ช่วยดูให้ที asks the listener to perform one bounded action for the speaker: “please take a look for me.” The same form appears in event expressions such as อีกที “one more time,” ทีละขั้น “one step at a time,” and สักที “at last / once and for all.” These uses share an event-delimiting logic: ที packages an action as an occurrence or turn rather than naming a physical object.
English often translates request-final ที as please, but that is only its conversational effect. It does not encode status politeness like ครับ/ค่ะ/คะ, and it does not name the person doing or benefiting from the action. Thai normally leaves those participants unspoken when the interaction makes them obvious.
Bare request-final ที is chiefly (informal) or familiar. With a conventional polite ending it can occur in ordinary polite speech, though a negotiable ได้ไหมครับ/คะ frame is safer upward or with strangers. Event expressions such as อีกที and ทีละคน are register-neutral; สักที becomes interactionally marked when it conveys impatience.
Request-final ที: perform this event for me
Place ที after the requested action, commonly following ให้ when the action is done for someone's benefit. The request can be brief and natural among familiar people; in a service encounter or upward relationship, add an appropriate request frame and polite particle.
| Frame | Event packaged | Typical force |
|---|---|---|
| ดูให้ที | one act of checking or looking | familiar direct request |
| ช่วย + event + ที | one requested performance | explicit appeal for help |
| event + ทีนะ | bounded request plus alignment | familiar, often coaxing |
| event + ทีครับ/ค่ะ | bounded request plus status politeness | polite but still relatively direct |
| event + อีกที | one additional occurrence | repeat the event |
ช่วยถือถุงนี้ให้ที
chuai thue thung ni hai thi
Please hold this bag for me. (familiar direct request for one bounded action)
เปิดหน้าต่างให้ทีนะ ในห้องร้อนมาก
poet natang hai thi na nai hong ron mak
Open the window for me, okay? It's very hot in here. (familiar softened request)
ช่วยตรวจชื่อในระบบให้ทีครับ
chuai truat chue nai rabop hai thi khrap
Could you check the name in the system for me? (polite request, male speaker)
ที does not itself mean that exactly one physical object is involved. The bounded unit is the requested performance: one act of holding, opening, or checking. The object may be singular, plural, or omitted.
The same action in three stances
All three turns ask for a number to be checked. The event remains the same, but its social packaging changes.
ช่วยตรวจหมายเลขนี้ให้หน่อยได้ไหมครับ
chuai truat mailek ni hai noi dai mai khrap
Could you check this number for me? (ordinary polite, negotiable request; male speaker)
ช่วยตรวจหมายเลขนี้ให้ทีนะ
chuai truat mailek ni hai thi na
Please check this number for me, okay? (familiar cooperative request)
ตรวจหมายเลขนี้ให้ที
truat mailek ni hai thi
Check this number for me. (familiar direct request; potentially urgent or abrupt)
The question frame ได้ไหมครับ explicitly offers the listener a response space and maintains polite distance. ทีนะ assumes more shared cooperation. Bare ที is compact and can be efficient when a close colleague is already helping, but it can sound like an order from a stranger or superior.
Repeating ผม and คุณ would not solve that problem. Politeness comes from the request design and relationship, not from translating English I and you word for word.
อีกที: one more performance
In อีกที, อีก adds another instance and ที delimits the repeated event. The expression can modify a request, plan, or report.
เมื่อกี้ฟังไม่ทัน พูดอีกทีได้ไหมคะ
muea ki fang mai than phut ik thi dai mai kha
I didn't catch that just now. Could you say it again? (polite request, female speaker)
ก่อนส่งขออ่านอีกทีนะครับ
kon song kho an ik thi na khrap
Before sending it, let me read it once more, okay? (polite request to repeat a checking event, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้ค่อยคุยเรื่องนี้กันอีกที
phrung ni khoi khui rueang ni kan ik thi
Let's discuss this again tomorrow. (familiar plan for another occurrence)
Compare อีกที with อีกครั้ง. Both can mean “again/one more time,” and ครั้ง explicitly counts occurrences. ที is extremely natural in conversational instructions and repetition requests, while ครั้ง is also at home in careful, statistical, or formally counted contexts. The choice is partly lexical and register-sensitive; there is no rule that one always counts exactly and the other never does.
ทีละ... distributes a sequence
The pattern ทีละ + quantity/unit directs attention to one bounded portion at a time. It does not mean that the whole event happens only once.
กรุณาเข้ามาทีละคนค่ะ
karuna khao ma thi la khon kha
Please come in one person at a time. (formal-leaning polite instruction, female speaker)
อธิบายทีละขั้นนะครับ จะได้ไม่สับสน
athibai thi la khan na khrap cha dai mai sapson
Explain it one step at a time so we don't get confused. (polite process instruction, male speaker)
ใส่น้ำทีละน้อย อย่าเทหมดทีเดียว
sai nam thi la noi ya the mot thi diao
Add the water little by little; don't pour it all in at once. (neutral procedural instruction)
Here ทีละน้อย distributes the adding across small portions, while ทีเดียว contrasts a single undivided event “all at once.” The same noun-like event unit ที participates in both patterns. It is not the request particle in these positions.
The spelling ที must also be kept separate from ที่, which RTGS likewise represents as thi. ที่ can mark a location, ordinal, or relative construction; the tone mark distinguishes it in Thai script. ทีละคน “one person at a time” and ที่ละคน are not spelling variants.
สักที: a bounded endpoint, often with impatience
สักที can request or celebrate an overdue endpoint: “finally,” “at last,” or “once and for all.” It often occurs after a negative duration or in a demand that something happen after too much delay.
รถมาสักที รอตั้งเกือบชั่วโมง
rot ma sak thi ro tang kueap chuamong
The bus has finally come—we waited nearly an hour. (informal relief after delay)
เมื่อไรงานจะเสร็จสักทีคะ
muearai ngan cha set sak thi kha
When will the work finally be finished? (polite wording but impatient question, female speaker)
หยุดเถียงกันสักทีได้ไหมครับ
yut thiang kan sak thi dai mai khrap
Could you finally stop arguing? (polite form carrying clear exasperation, male speaker)
Polite คะ/ครับ does not erase the impatience built into สักที plus the situation. Nor is สักที interchangeable with ordinary request-final ที: ช่วยดูให้ที asks for an act of looking, whereas ช่วยดูสักที suggests that the looking is overdue or that the speaker has been waiting for it.
Particle stacks and scope
Request-final ที can be followed by alignment นะ or a polite status particle. Each layer contributes separately.
ช่วยส่งรูปมาให้ทีนะ
chuai song rup ma hai thi na
Send me the photo, okay? (familiar request plus alignment)
ช่วยเรียกช่างให้ทีค่ะ
chuai riak chang hai thi kha
Please call a technician for me. (polite direct request, female speaker)
อ่านข้อความสุดท้ายอีกทีนะคะ
an khokhwam sutthai ik thi na kha
Please read the last message once more. (softened polite repetition request, female speaker)
In the third example, อีกที belongs to the event description “read one more time,” นะ seeks cooperation, and คะ is the standard female listener-oriented ending for a request. Writing นะค่ะ would incorrectly substitute statement ค่ะ inside that stack.
ทีหน่อย is not a mechanical way to double English please. หน่อย and ที overlap in request-softening effects but conceptualize the request differently, and speakers choose conventional phrasing rather than accumulating every available softener. The request-frame guide provides the broader system.
What intonation changes
A short falling ที can sound efficient, urgent, or commanding. A slightly lengthened ทีนะ may coax a familiar listener. Heavy stress on สักที conveys accumulated impatience, while a relieved contour after a completed event conveys “finally!” The location of ที still distinguishes request-final from อีกที or ทีละ...; intonation enriches the effect but does not erase syntax.
RTGS thi records none of the pitch, duration, or urgency. Do not add invented tone or length symbols. Practice the expression as a whole event frame, including the relationship in which it is appropriate.
Natural multi-turn dialogue
A woman asks a male colleague to repeat a technical explanation.
เมื่อกี้ตามไม่ทัน ช่วยอธิบายอีกทีได้ไหมคะ
muea ki tam mai than chuai athibai ik thi dai mai kha
I couldn't follow just now. Could you explain it again? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวอธิบายทีละขั้น
dai khrap diao athibai thi la khan
Sure. I'll explain it one step at a time. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ช่วยเริ่มจากหน้าที่สามให้ทีนะคะ
chuai roem chak na thi sam hai thi na kha
Please start from page three for me, okay? (softened polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ถ้าตรงไหนไม่ชัดก็บอกได้เลย
dai khrap tha trong nai mai chat ko bok dai loei
Of course. If anything isn't clear, just let me know. (polite cooperative response, male speaker)
In หน้าที่สาม, ที่ marks the ordinal “third”; the later ที packages the requested act of starting. RTGS gives both thi, but Thai script keeps the grammatical contrast visible.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting request-final ที before the event
❌ ช่วยทีเปิดไฟให้หน่อย
Incorrect neutral order—request-final ที follows the requested event.
✅ ช่วยเปิดไฟให้ที
chuai poet fai hai thi
Please turn on the light for me. (familiar direct request)
2. Treating ที as sufficient status politeness
❌ อาจารย์ ตรวจงานให้ที
Too direct as a neutral request to a professor—ที does not itself mark respect.
✅ อาจารย์คะ ช่วยตรวจงานชิ้นนี้ให้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
achan kha chuai truat ngan chin ni hai noi dai mai kha
Professor, could you please check this assignment? (respectful polite request, female speaker)
3. Confusing ที with location or ordinal ที่
❌ เจอกันทีสถานีตอนหกโมง
Incorrect spelling for location—use ที่ with a tone mark.
✅ เจอกันที่สถานีตอนหกโมง
choe kan thi sathani ton hok mong
Let's meet at the station at six. (neutral familiar arrangement)
4. Using สักที for a neutral first request
❌ ช่วยส่งเมนูให้ดูสักทีค่ะ
Potentially impatient if no delay or repeated request exists; สักที implies an overdue endpoint.
✅ ช่วยส่งเมนูให้ดูหน่อยค่ะ
chuai song menu hai du noi kha
Please send me the menu to look at. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
5. Writing นะค่ะ after a request
❌ ช่วยอธิบายอีกทีนะค่ะ
Incorrect standard female particle stack—listener-oriented requests take นะคะ.
✅ ช่วยอธิบายอีกทีนะคะ
chuai athibai ik thi na kha
Please explain it once more. (softened polite request, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Request-final ที packages one action for the listener to perform; it does not by itself mark status politeness. The event-unit logic also appears in อีกที “one more time,” ทีละ... “one unit at a time,” and สักที “finally/once and for all.” Keep ที distinct from ที่, choose stacks for their actual stance, and let context—not repeated pronouns—identify who acts for whom.
