Thai แหละ pins down a referent or proposition as the relevant answer: “this very one,” “that is exactly it,” or “that, in the end, is the point.” It can follow a focused noun phrase, a demonstrative, or a whole proposition. English may use cleft stress, exactly, the one, after all, or no separate word.
Calling แหละ mere emphasis misses its discourse logic. The speaker closes a set of alternatives and identifies what should now count as settled. That act can sound helpful, decisive, resigned, teasing, or accusatory depending on the relationship and intonation.
Select the exact referent
After a noun phrase or demonstrative, แหละ selects that item from relevant alternatives. A following ที่ clause can state why it is the answer.
| Productive frame | Natural model | Discourse job |
|---|---|---|
| นี่ + แหละ | นี่แหละ | this is exactly it |
| นั่น + แหละ | นั่นแหละ | that is the point or answer |
| noun phrase + แหละ | คนนี้แหละ | this person in particular |
| focused phrase + แหละ + ที่... | โต๊ะนี้แหละที่ว่าง | it is this table that is free |
| เอา + choice + แหละ | เอาอันนี้แหละ | settles on this choice |
| proposition + แหละ | เขาคงลืมแหละ | settles on a conclusion |
คนนี้แหละที่โทรมาแจ้งข่าวเมื่อคืน
khon ni lae thi tho ma chaeng khao muea khuen
This is the very person who called with the news last night. (conversational identifying focus)
เอากระเป๋าใบเล็กสีดำนี่แหละค่ะ
ao krapao bai lek si dam ni lae kha
I'll take this small black bag—the one right here. (ordinary-polite decisive selection, female speaker)
ตรงหน้าต่างนั่นแหละที่สัญญาณดีที่สุดครับ
trong natang nan lae thi sanya di thi sut khrap
Right by that window is where the signal is best. (polite identifying focus, male speaker)
The selected phrase normally precedes แหละ. Thai does not insert the particle before the candidate as though it were an English article. In คนนี้แหละที่..., ที่ introduces the clause that verifies the selection; แหละ does not replace เป็น or คือ as a general copula.
Conclusive focus on a whole proposition
After a clause, แหละ presents its content as the explanation or conclusion the conversation has reached. The proposition may have been disputed, inferred, or accepted reluctantly.
ปัญหาอยู่ที่งบประมาณนี่แหละ เราถึงเริ่มงานไม่ได้
panha yu thi ngoppraman ni lae rao thueng roem ngan mai dai
The budget is precisely the problem; that is why we cannot start. (conversational explanatory conclusion)
สุดท้ายเขาก็เลือกงานที่ใกล้บ้านนั่นแหละ
sutthai khao ko lueak ngan thi klai ban nan lae
In the end, he chose the job near home after all. (conversational settled outcome)
คุยกันตรง ๆ ก็ดีที่สุดแหละครับ
khui kan trong trong ko di thi sut lae khrap
Talking frankly is really the best course. (polite conclusive assessment, male speaker)
Removing แหละ leaves a truth-conditionally complete clause. What disappears is the instruction to treat that content as the answer that resolves the current issue. This is why a literal translation may contain no word corresponding to the particle.
The combination ก็...แหละ is especially common when the speaker accepts a conclusion already available from context: ก็คงต้องรอแหละ “I suppose we will just have to wait.” ก็ links the response to the prior situation; แหละ settles on the resulting position. The linking-particle guide explains the first layer.
Identifying focus versus plain assertion
Compare one proposition—who will take responsibility—across three stances.
ผมจะจัดการเรื่องนี้ครับ
phom cha chatkan rueang ni khrap
I'll handle this matter. (plain ordinary-polite commitment, male speaker)
ผมนี่แหละจะจัดการเรื่องนี้ครับ
phom ni lae cha chatkan rueang ni khrap
I am the one who will handle this matter. (polite contrastive self-selection, male speaker)
เรื่องนี้ผมจัดการเองแหละครับ ไม่ต้องห่วง
rueang ni phom chatkan eng lae khrap mai tong huang
I really will handle this matter myself; don't worry. (polite conclusive reassurance, male speaker)
The middle sentence rejects alternative agents. The final sentence closes doubt about the speaker's responsibility. Repeating English I as ผม in every subsequent clause would not strengthen the focus; Thai can omit it once the responsible person is established.
Demonstratives plus แหละ
นี่แหละ and นั่นแหละ are highly productive. นี่แหละ often identifies something presently available or newly recognized; นั่นแหละ often accepts or confirms something the other person has raised.
นี่แหละคือเหตุผลที่ฉันไม่อยากรีบตัดสินใจ
ni lae khue hetphon thi chan mai yak rip tatsinchai
This is exactly why I do not want to decide too quickly. (informal explicit identification)
นั่นแหละ ผมกำลังจะถามเรื่องเดียวกันครับ
nan lae phom kamlang cha tham rueang diao kan khrap
Exactly—that is the same thing I was about to ask. (ordinary-polite alignment, male speaker)
วางไว้แบบนั้นแหละ ไม่ต้องขยับแล้ว
wang wai baep nan lae mai tong khayap laeo
Leave it exactly like that; there is no need to move it now. (familiar directive confirming the arrangement)
In นี่แหละคือ..., คือ performs equation and แหละ focuses the left side. In แบบนั้นแหละ, the particle confirms a manner. Do not memorize นั่นแหละ as an indivisible word meaning “yes”: it can identify an object, manner, reason, or proposition.
Conclusion does not mean certainty or tense
แหละ can settle on a tentative conclusion without claiming certainty. It also combines naturally with past, current, or projected events.
เขาคงติดประชุมอยู่แหละ เดี๋ยวก็คงโทรกลับ
khao khong tit prachum yu lae diao ko khong tho klap
He is probably tied up in a meeting; he will likely call back shortly. (informal settled but inferential explanation)
เมื่อวานก็คงเป็นเขานั่นแหละที่ปิดประตูคนสุดท้าย
muea wan ko khong pen khao nan lae thi pit pratu khon sutthai
Yesterday it was probably him who was the last to close the door. (conversational retrospective inference)
The markers คง keep both conclusions inferential. แหละ indicates that the speaker is provisionally settling on them, not that the events are grammatically perfect or certain. Final มั้ง would instead keep the guess more openly retractable; compare tentative มั้ง.
Particle-stack contrast
Outer particles reshape how a settled identification is offered to the listener.
| Stack | Typical effect | Register |
|---|---|---|
| นั่นแหละ | decisive identification or agreement | informal/conversational |
| นั่นแหละครับ/ค่ะ | identification plus ordinary politeness | ordinary polite |
| นั่นแหละนะ | settled point presented for alignment | informal |
| ก็...แหละ | conclusion accepted from prior circumstances | conversational |
| ...เองแหละ | exclusive self/identity focus plus conclusion | conversational |
คุณนิดนั่นแหละที่เป็นคนเก็บเอกสารชุดนี้ค่ะ
khun nit nan lae thi pen khon kep ekkasan chut ni kha
Khun Nit is the very person who filed this set of documents. (polite identifying correction, female speaker)
ก็ต้องลองคุยกับเขาตรง ๆ แหละนะ
ko tong long khui kap khao trong trong lae na
Well, we really will have to try speaking to him frankly, you know. (informal conclusion seeking alignment)
Polite ครับ/ค่ะ does not erase a correction. คุณนิดนั่นแหละ...ค่ะ can still sound pointed if the listener blamed someone else. นะ makes the settled conclusion an appeal for shared acceptance, not a more intense identification.
What intonation changes
A short fall across the end of a turn containing แหละ sounds decisive and closes alternatives. A longer, softer form can sound resigned—“that is just how it is”—or reassuring. Heavy stress can make an accusation or correction sharp. A playful rise in familiar conversation can invite recognition rather than close the topic completely.
The lexical tone remains part of แหละ. RTGS lae records neither tone nor turn-level contour. Extra vowel letters and improvised tone marks are not valid substitutes for hearing the construction in context.
Register and relationship
แหละ is primarily (informal/conversational), though it occurs in lively commentary and quoted speech. Formal reports and academic prose usually name the relation explicitly: ประเด็นสำคัญคือ... “the important point is...” or สาเหตุหลักคือ... “the main cause is....” Using แหละ in an official finding makes the conclusion sound conversational and personally positioned.
Among intimates, เธอนั่นแหละ may be playful blame. Said sharply to a colleague, it identifies them as responsible. Said upward to a senior, it can be openly confrontational. The word has not changed; the accountability created by exact identification has.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A customer chooses between two bags.
สนใจใบไหนเป็นพิเศษคะ
sonchai bai nai pen phiset kha
Is there a particular one you are interested in? (ordinary-polite question, female employee)
ใบสีดำที่อยู่ชั้นบนครับ แต่ขอดูใบเล็กด้วย
bai si dam thi yu chan bon khrap tae kho du bai lek duai
The black one on the upper shelf, but I would like to see the small one too. (ordinary-polite reply, male customer)
สองใบนี้ราคาเท่ากันค่ะ
song bai ni rakha thao kan kha
These two are the same price. (ordinary-polite information, female employee)
งั้นเอาใบเล็กนี่แหละครับ ถือสะดวกกว่า
ngan ao bai lek ni lae khrap thue saduak kwa
Then I will take this small one; it is easier to carry. (ordinary-polite settled choice, male customer)
The customer first narrows the set, then uses นี่แหละครับ only when the selection is final. Repeating กระเป๋า in each turn would be grammatical but unnecessarily heavy because classifier ใบ maintains the active category.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting แหละ before the selected phrase
❌ ฉันจะเอาแหละอันสีฟ้าค่ะ
Incorrect order—แหละ follows the alternative selected as exact.
✅ ฉันจะเอาอันสีฟ้านี่แหละค่ะ
chan cha ao an si fa ni lae kha
I will take this blue one right here. (ordinary-polite decisive choice, female speaker)
2. Confusing แหละ with topic-return ล่ะ
❌ ผมสบายดีครับ แล้วคุณแหละครับ
Incorrect for ‘and you?’—แหละ selects an answer; topic-return questions use ล่ะ.
✅ ผมไม่เป็นไรครับ แล้วคุณล่ะครับ
phom mai pen rai khrap laeo khun la khrap
I'm fine. And you? (ordinary-polite topic return, male speaker)
3. Using แหละ as a general copula
❌ สาเหตุแหละฝนตกหนักครับ
Incorrect equation—แหละ cannot replace คือ between the identified terms.
✅ สาเหตุหลักคือฝนตกหนักต่อเนื่องครับ
sahet lak khue fon tok nak ton nueang khrap
The main cause is continuous heavy rain. (formal-polite explanation, male speaker)
4. Adding แหละ to a neutral first-time report
❌ รถออกแปดโมงแหละค่ะ
Wrong for the intended neutral timetable announcement—แหละ implies that this time settles a live alternative or conclusion.
✅ รถออกเวลาแปดโมงตรงค่ะ
rot ok wela paet mong trong kha
The vehicle leaves at exactly eight. (neutral ordinary-polite timetable statement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Place แหละ after the referent or proposition that closes a relevant set of alternatives. It can identify the exact person or thing, settle on an explanation, or accept a conclusion. Omission leaves the basic content but removes that discourse closure. Stacking and intonation determine whether the result sounds aligned, resigned, reassuring, or accusatory.
