In many high-frequency collocations, ให้ contributes provision rather than literal transfer of an object: ให้คำแนะนำ “give advice,” ให้ความสำคัญ “attach importance,” and ให้บริการ “provide service.” The noun identifies what is provided, while its conventional complement determines who benefits or what receives attention.
These expressions contrast with the participant structure taught under giving with ให้, where a theme is transferred to a recipient.
Provision frames
The most productive family is ให้ + abstract/service noun + recipient or domain. Some nouns take a person directly; others prefer แก่, กับ, ต่อ, or a topic phrase. Memorize the whole frame.
| Collocation | Meaning | Frequent continuation |
|---|---|---|
| ให้คำแนะนำ | advise | person + เรื่อง topic |
| ให้คำปรึกษา | provide consultation | แก่ + person + เรื่อง topic |
| ให้บริการ | provide service | person / service type |
| ให้โอกาส | give an opportunity | person + ได้/ทำ... |
| ให้สิทธิ | grant a right | person + ในการ... |

Social support and recognition
ให้กำลังใจ encourages, ให้อภัย forgives, and ให้เกียรติ shows respect or honors someone. The noun is tightly bound to ให้, but the affected person can be overt or omitted from context.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect standard collocation for ‘prioritize.’
✅ บริษัทให้ความสำคัญกับคุณภาพค่ะ
borisat hai khwam samkhan kap khunnaphap kha
The company prioritizes quality. (formal corporate statement, female voice)
2. Treating every ให้ as physical giving
❌ โรงแรมให้รถบริการลูกค้าค่ะ
Wrong arrangement for intended ‘provides transport service’; it suggests giving a car.
✅ โรงแรมให้บริการรถรับส่งแก่ลูกค้าค่ะ
rongraem hai borikan rot rap song kae luk kha kha

3. Reversing the opportunity recipient

I'm afraid I won't pass the exam. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ให้ collocations package provision, evaluation, cooperation, support, opportunity, and rights.
- Learn the abstract noun and its continuation together: ให้ความสำคัญกับ, ให้ความร่วมมือในการ.
- Distinguish these from ให้ + person + predicate, where the person acts in a caused or permitted event.
- Thai uses lexical frames and omission rather than agreement or a universal English-style indirect-object template.
