ซึ่ง in Written Relative Clauses

ซึ่ง introduces a noun-modifying clause much like ที่, but it belongs especially to (formal) speech and edited writing. It often tells the reader, “here is additional information about the identifiable referent just mentioned”: โครงการดังกล่าว ซึ่งได้รับอนุมัติเมื่อวาน... “the aforementioned project, which was approved yesterday....”

The useful distinction is a tendency, not a mechanical equation. Neutral ที่ is common in both restrictive and other descriptions. ซึ่ง strongly favors definite or already established heads and elaborative, often nonrestrictive information, yet formal Thai also uses it in clauses that help identify the head. Register, information status, and discourse purpose work together.

Head noun + ซึ่ง + clause

Like other Thai relative clauses, a ซึ่ง clause follows its head. The head corresponds to an understood role inside the clause; ซึ่ง itself does not inflect for person, animacy, number, or case.

object gap clauseคณะกรรมการเสนอhead is understood as object

โครงการดังกล่าวซึ่งได้รับอนุมัติเมื่อวานจะเริ่มดำเนินการในเดือนหน้าครับ

khrongkan dang klao sueng dai rap anumat muea wan cha roem damnoen kan nai duean na khrap

The aforementioned project, which was approved yesterday, will begin operation next month. (formal-polite report, male speaker; project is the understood subject of ได้รับอนุมัติ)

มาตรการซึ่งคณะกรรมการเสนอจะมีผลตั้งแต่ต้นปีหน้า

mattrakan sueng khanakammakan sanoe cha mi phon tangtae ton pi na

The measure proposed by the committee will take effect from the beginning of next year. (formal written style; measure is the understood object of เสนอ)

In the second example, คณะกรรมการ is the overt subject inside the relative clause and มาตรการ supplies the missing object of เสนอ. Thai does not turn ซึ่ง into separate forms equivalent to English who, whom, and which.

The main contrast with ที่

For everyday identification, ที่ is the default. For a formally presented, already identifiable referent followed by background or explanation, ซึ่ง is especially natural.

ผู้สมัครที่มีประสบการณ์อย่างน้อยสามปีจะได้เข้าสัมภาษณ์ค่ะ

phu samak thi mi prasopkan yang noi sam pi cha dai khao samphat kha

Applicants who have at least three years of experience will be interviewed. (formal-polite selection criterion, female speaker; ที่ restricts the applicant set)

ผู้สมัครทั้งสิบรายซึ่งมีประสบการณ์ตรงจะเข้าสัมภาษณ์ในวันศุกร์ค่ะ

phu samak thang sip rai sueng mi prasopkan trong cha khao samphat nai wan suk kha

All ten applicants, who have directly relevant experience, will be interviewed on Friday. (formal-polite report, female speaker; ซึ่ง adds information about the established group)

The quantified head ผู้สมัครทั้งสิบราย is already a complete, identifiable set. The ซึ่ง clause most naturally comments on that set rather than selecting some of its members. With an open class such as ผู้สมัคร..., ที่ readily supplies a criterion.

This does not make ที่ = restrictive and ซึ่ง = nonrestrictive an exceptionless rule. Corpus usage overlaps, particularly in formal prose. Use the contrast as a production guideline: choose ที่ for unmarked identification; choose ซึ่ง when edited style and elaboration are genuinely intended.

💡
Before choosing ซึ่ง, ask whether the head is already identifiable without the following clause. If yes, and the clause adds formal background, ซึ่ง is a strong choice. If the clause's main job is to tell the listener which person or thing you mean, ที่ is normally safer.

Gaps are normal; repetition needs a reason

Formal appearance does not require repeating the head or adding an English-style pronoun. A subject or object gap is still the ordinary compact strategy.

บริษัทซึ่งตั้งอยู่ในจังหวัดระยองกำลังขยายกำลังการผลิต

borisat sueng tang yu nai changwat rayong kamlang khayai kamlang kan phalit

The company, which is located in Rayong Province, is expanding production capacity. (formal business writing; subject gap after ซึ่ง)

ข้อมูลซึ่งทีมวิจัยรวบรวมตลอดหกเดือนถูกนำมาใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ครั้งนี้

khomun sueng thim wichai ruapruam talot hok duean thuk nam ma chai nai kan wikhro khrang ni

The data that the research team collected over six months were used in this analysis. (formal academic style; object gap after รวบรวม)

Thai does permit resumptive reference in some relative clauses, particularly where the relevant relation is structurally distant or discourse clarity motivates it. That option is not a requirement and can sound repetitive in a simple subject or direct-object relative. Keep the straightforward gap in the patterns above.

Scope over a preceding proposition

In edited Thai, ซึ่ง can also take the preceding event or proposition as its antecedent, especially in ซึ่งทำให้... “which caused...”. The antecedent is then not just the nearest noun.

ระบบชำระเงินหยุดทำงานนานสองชั่วโมง ซึ่งทำให้คำสั่งซื้อจำนวนมากล่าช้า

rabop chamra ngoen yut thamngan nan song chuamong sueng thamhai kham sang sue chamnuan mak lacha

The payment system was down for two hours, which delayed a large number of orders. (formal report style; ซึ่งทำให้ comments on the preceding event)

The natural scope is “the system's being down for two hours caused the delay,” not “two hours caused it.” English uses sentential which similarly, but Thai writers also have alternatives such as เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวทำให้... or a new sentence. If the antecedent might be mistaken for a nearby noun, repeat a summary noun.

ยอดขายลดลงต่อเนื่องสามเดือน เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวทำให้บริษัทต้องทบทวนแผนการตลาด

yot khai lot long tonueang sam duean hetkan dang klao thamhai borisat tong thopthuan phaen kan talat

Sales declined for three consecutive months. That development forced the company to review its marketing plan. (formal business writing; explicit summary noun removes scope ambiguity)

The formal reference page explains this backward-looking use of ดังกล่าว.

Presence, omission, and clause boundaries

In the formal contexts that favor ซึ่ง, keep the marker overt. Omitting it may create a compact property modifier, a compound-like sequence, or simply a difficult boundary; it does not preserve the same written signal automatically.

รายงานฉบับนี้ซึ่งเผยแพร่ต่อสาธารณะแล้วมีข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมสามส่วน

raingan chabap ni sueng phoeiphrae to satharana laeo mi khomun phoemtoem sam suan

This report, which has now been released publicly, contains three additional sections. (formal written style)

The demonstrative-bearing head รายงานฉบับนี้ is already definite. ซึ่ง...แล้ว gives current background, and the main predicate มีข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมสามส่วน resumes after the modifier. แล้ว belongs inside the relative clause and does not tense the containing sentence.

Spacing and commas are editorial aids, not the grammar of ซึ่ง. Thai may leave the modifier unpunctuated, especially when it is tightly integrated. Use a natural pause or punctuation in dense prose when it prevents the reader from losing the main predicate, but do not import English comma rules one-for-one.

💡
When a ซึ่ง clause becomes long, locate the first main predicate after it. If that predicate is hard to find, shorten the modifier, repeat the head in a new sentence, or replace sentential ซึ่ง with a summary noun such as เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าว.

Register and an ordinary-polite dialogue

ซึ่ง is normal in (formal) reports, academic prose, public statements, and prepared speech. It is possible in conversation, especially when speakers are discussing a document, but repeated use in a casual exchange sounds written. Neutral ที่ usually fits service encounters and everyday identification better.

ในประกาศนี้ควรใช้ที่หรือซึ่งคะ

nai prakat ni khuan chai thi rue sueng kha

In this notice, should we use ที่ or ซึ่ง? (ordinary-polite question about formal wording, female speaker)

ตรงนี้พูดถึงผู้เข้าร่วมทุกคน ใช้ซึ่งได้ครับ

trong ni phut thueng phu khao ruam thuk khon chai sueng dai khrap

Here it refers to all the participants, so ซึ่ง works. (ordinary-polite editorial reply, male speaker)

แต่ตอนคุยกับลูกค้า ฉันใช้คนที่โทรมาได้ตามปกติใช่ไหมคะ

tae ton khui kap lukkha chan chai khon thi tho ma dai tam pakati chai mai kha

But when speaking with a customer, I can normally say ‘the person who called’ with ที่, right? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ ที่เป็นกลางและฟังเป็นธรรมชาติกว่า

chai khrap thi pen klang lae fang pen thammachat kwa

Yes. ที่ is more neutral and sounds more natural there. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Placing ซึ่ง before the head as though it were a determiner

❌ ผมต้องการซึ่งกาแฟไม่ใส่น้ำตาลครับ

Incorrect—ซึ่ง cannot precede its head as an equivalent of English ‘which’ or ‘the.’

✅ ผมต้องการกาแฟที่ไม่ใส่น้ำตาลครับ

phom tongkan kafae thi mai sai namtan khrap

I'd like coffee without sugar. (ordinary-polite request, male speaker; neutral ที่ follows the head)

2. Treating ซึ่ง as the subject and repeating the head

❌ บริษัทซึ่งบริษัทตั้งอยู่ใกล้ท่าเรือกำลังรับพนักงาน

Incorrect for a simple subject relative—the repeated บริษัท occupies the subject role that the head already supplies.

✅ บริษัทซึ่งตั้งอยู่ใกล้ท่าเรือกำลังรับพนักงานเพิ่ม

borisat sueng tang yu klai tha ruea kamlang rap phanak ngan phoem

The company, which is located near the port, is hiring additional staff. (formal business writing)

3. Assuming ซึ่ง always selects one member of a set

❌ ผู้สมัครทุกคนซึ่งมีประสบการณ์อย่างน้อยสามปีจะได้เข้าสัมภาษณ์ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended restriction ‘only applicants with three years of experience’—ทุกคน establishes all applicants, and the ซึ่ง clause reads as background about that complete set.

✅ ผู้เข้าร่วมที่ลงทะเบียนแล้วเท่านั้นจึงจะเข้าได้ค่ะ

phu khao ruam thi long thabian laeo thao nan chueng cha khao dai kha

Only participants who have registered may enter. (formal-polite restriction, female speaker)

4. Using ซึ่งว่า for a report complement

❌ ผู้จัดการยืนยันซึ่งว่าจะส่งสินค้าให้ทันเวลา

Incorrect—reported propositional content after ยืนยัน takes ว่า, not the relative marker ซึ่งว่า.

✅ ผู้จัดการยืนยันว่าจะส่งสินค้าได้ทันเวลาครับ

phu chatkan yuenyan wa cha song sinkha dai than wela khrap

The manager confirmed that the goods could be delivered on time. (formal-polite report, male speaker)

5. Giving sentence-final ซึ่ง no continuation

❌ ระบบหยุดทำงานเมื่อคืนซึ่ง

Incomplete—ซึ่ง opens a following modifier or discourse relation and cannot simply translate sentence-final English ‘which.’

✅ ระบบหยุดทำงานเมื่อคืน ซึ่งฝ่ายเทคนิคกำลังตรวจสอบสาเหตุอยู่

rabop yut thamngan muea khuen sueng fai theknik kamlang truat sop sahet yu

The system went down last night, and the technical team is investigating the cause. (formal written update; ซึ่ง introduces the elaborating clause)

Key Takeaways

ซึ่ง is an overtly written-style relativizer placed after its head. It favors identifiable, often inanimate or formally presented antecedents and frequently adds elaborative information, but its distribution overlaps with ที่ rather than obeying a perfect restrictive/nonrestrictive split. Use gaps normally, retain the marker in formal prose, and make sentential scope explicit when a whole preceding event—not the nearest noun—is the antecedent.
