innebära (to mean, entail)

innebära is one of three Swedish verbs that English flattens into "to mean," and it carries a very specific sense: to entail, to involve, to imply as a consequence. It is built from inne- ("in, inside") plus the strong verb bära ("to carry") — so literally "to carry inside," to bring something along as a built-in consequence. Because it is a prefixed strong verb, it keeps bära's ablaut completely: innebära – innebar – inneburit. If you know bära – bar – burit, the conjugation is automatic.

Lay the base verb beside it: bära – bär – bar – burit gives innebära – innebär – innebar – inneburit. The vowel runs ä → a → u: the infinitive and present keep ä (innebära, innebär), the past drops to a short a (innebar), and the supine shifts to u (inneburit). An imperative is grammatically possible but pragmatically odd — you don't command something to entail something — so you'll almost never meet it. The agreeing participle inneburen exists but is rare in practice.

Vad innebär det här för oss?

What does this mean for us / what does this involve for us? innebär — present, vowel ä.

Beslutet innebar stora förändringar för hela teamet.

The decision entailed big changes for the whole team. innebar — past, vowel a.

Flytten har inneburit en hel del stress.

The move has involved quite a lot of stress. har inneburit — perfect, supine vowel u.

Use 1: present, past and perfect

The tenses follow the principal parts directly. The present innebär answers the classic question Vad innebär det? — "What does that involve? What are the implications?" — which is subtly different from asking what a word means. The past is innebar (short, no ending), and the perfect is har inneburit.

Att vara förälder innebär ständigt ansvar.

Being a parent entails constant responsibility. Present innebär.

Lågkonjunkturen innebar att många förlorade jobbet.

The recession meant that many people lost their jobs. innebar att — consequence clause in the past.

Den nya lagen har inneburit högre kostnader för företagen.

The new law has entailed higher costs for businesses. har inneburit — perfect.

Use 2: the consequence sense — innebära att …

The heart of innebära is logical consequence. Use innebära att to spell out what follows from something: "X means/implies that Y." This is where it diverges sharply from betyda. You can swap them in casual speech, but in careful Swedish betyda points to a word's signification while innebära points to what a situation brings with it.

Mer frihet innebär också mer ansvar.

More freedom also entails more responsibility. innebära linking cause to consequence.

Det innebär inte att vi ger upp.

That doesn't mean (imply) that we're giving up. innebära att in the negative.

Att tacka ja innebär att du binder dig i två år.

Saying yes entails that you commit for two years. innebära att spelling out the consequence.

Use 3: innebära vs betyda vs mena

These three are the classic trap. innebära = entail / involve / imply as a consequence (about a situation: Det innebär mer arbete). betyda = signify / mean (about a word's meaning: Vad betyder ordet? — and also "matter": Du betyder mycket). mena = intend / mean to say (about a person's intention: Vad menar du?). A quick test: if a person does the meaning, use mena; if a word carries the meaning, use betyda; if a situation has a consequence, use innebära.

Vad betyder ordet 'lagom'?

What does the word 'lagom' mean? Word meaning → betyda, not innebära.

Vad menar du med det?

What do you mean by that? A person's intent → mena.

Vad innebär den nya regeln i praktiken?

What does the new rule mean / involve in practice? A situation's consequences → innebära.

Common Mistakes

❌ Vad betyder det för framtiden?

Wrong nuance if you mean consequences — for 'what does this involve for the future' use innebär. betyda is for word meaning.

✅ Vad innebär det för framtiden?

What does that mean / entail for the future?

❌ Det innebärde stora problem.

Incorrect — innebära is strong (like bära) and takes no weak -de ending. The past is innebar.

✅ Det innebar att vi fick börja om.

It meant that we had to start over.

❌ Det har innebar problem.

Wrong form after har — you need the supine inneburit, not the past innebar.

✅ Det har inneburit problem.

It has entailed problems.

❌ Jag innebär att vi ska gå nu.

A person can't 'innebära' — that's intention, so use mena: Jag menar att vi ska gå nu.

✅ Jag menar att vi ska gå nu.

I mean (I'm saying) that we should go now.

💡
Tie innebära to its base verb — bära – bar – buritinnebära – innebar – inneburit, ä–a–u carried over intact. For the meaning, think "carry inside as a consequence": a situation entails (innebära), a word signifies (betyda), and a person intends (mena).
