Kufika means “arrive, reach.” The arriving mover is subject, while the endpoint is normally a place name, locative noun, kwenye phrase, or person-oriented kwa phrase—not a direct object. Causative kufikisha adds an agent who gets someone or something to that endpoint: “deliver, take as far as, cause to arrive.”
All unlabelled uses below are neutral current Standard Swahili. Schedule and deadline formulas frequent in official contexts are marked (formal) where relevant.
Practical paradigm
The stem fik- is a regular Bantu -a stem. Present negative changes final -a to -i; subjunctive changes it to -e.
| Form | I | you (sg.) | he/she | we | you (pl.) | they |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| present | ninafika | unafika | anafika | tunafika | mnafika | wanafika |
| past | nilifika | ulifika | alifika | tulifika | mlifika | walifika |
| perfect | nimefika | umefika | amefika | tumefika | mmefika | wamefika |
| future | nitafika | utafika | atafika | tutafika | mtafika | watafika |
| present negative | sifiki | hufiki | hafiki | hatufiki | hamfiki | hawafiki |
| past negative | sikufika | hukufika | hakufika | hatukufika | hamkufika | hawakufika |
| subjunctive | nifike | ufike | afike | tufike | mfike | wafike |
The singular imperative is fika and plural is fikeni.
Fika mapema ili tupate viti vya mbele.
Arrive early so that we can get seats at the front.
Fikeni kituoni dakika thelathini kabla ya basi kuondoka.
Arrive at the station thirty minutes before the bus leaves.
The main builds are ni-na-fik-a, si-fik-i, and ni-fik-e. Perfect nimefika is an especially common arrival announcement: the journey has ended and the speaker is now at the destination.
Nimefika salama; nitakupigia simu baada ya kuingia hotelini.
I have arrived safely; I will call you after entering the hotel.
Goal expressions
Place names normally follow directly:
Tutafika Mwanza kesho jioni tukiondoka mapema.
We will reach Mwanza tomorrow evening if we leave early.
Locative -ni is equally natural:
Mgeni alifika ofisini wakati kikao kilikuwa kimeanza.
The visitor arrived at the office when the meeting had already begun.
Use kwenye with a bounded place, surface, or event, and kwa with a person or professional destination:
Tulipofika kwenye lango kuu, mlinzi alituomba vitambulisho.
When we reached the main gate, the guard asked us for identification.
Nimefika kwa fundi, lakini bado hajafungua duka.
I have arrived at the repairer's place, but he has not opened the shop yet.
English requires at/in/to after “arrive.” Swahili does not have one matching preposition: the form depends on what kind of endpoint the speaker construes.
Kufika is intransitive. Even when English translates it “reach,” do not insert an object marker into the basic stem: nimeifika Arusha is not Standard Swahili. The established extended verb fikia can mean “reach/arrive at” or “attain,” but it has its own syntax and senses.
Arrival times and deadlines
Clock time can directly modify arrival:
Treni ilifika saa nne na dakika kumi asubuhi.
The train arrived at ten ten in the morning.
To ask when, use kufika saa ngapi? or kufika lini?
Mtafika saa ngapi ili niandae chakula kwa wakati?
What time will you arrive so that I can prepare the food on time?
Applicative kufikia is frequent in deadline expressions meaning “by/up to/reaching”:
Fomu zote lazima ziwasilishwe kufikia Ijumaa saa kumi jioni.
All forms must be submitted by Friday at four in the afternoon.
This is common (formal) administrative language. It does not mean that the forms physically travel like a person. The temporal endpoint has become the conventional complement of kufikia.
Causative fikisha
Compare the intransitive base and causative:
Watoto walifika shuleni kabla ya mvua.
The children arrived at school before the rain.
Dereva aliwafikisha watoto shuleni kabla ya mvua.
The driver got the children to school before the rain.
With fika, watoto are mover subjects. With fikisha, dereva is causer subject and the movers become object, indexed by -wa-. Build: a-li-wa-fik-ish-a.
The caused mover can also be an inanimate delivery:
Tafadhali fikisha kifurushi hiki mapokezi kabla ya saa sita.
Please deliver this package to reception before noon.
Fikisha can extend to numerical or temporal endpoints: amefikisha miaka hamsini “has reached fifty years/turned fifty.” These are established collocations, not permission to attach causative morphology to every English “make reach.” See causative formation.
Common collocations
Use kufika salama “arrive safely,” kufika mapema “arrive early,” kuchelewa kufika “arrive late,” kufika mwisho “reach the end,” kufika nyumbani “get home,” and mara tu alipofika “as soon as she arrived.”
Tulichelewa njiani lakini tulifika salama kabla ya giza.
We were delayed on the way, but we arrived safely before dark.
Common Mistakes
Stacking kwenye with locative -ni
❌ Tulifika kwenye stendini saa moja.
Incorrect — use either kwenye stendi or locative stendini, not both.
✅ Tulifika stendini saa moja kamili asubuhi.
We arrived at the bus station at exactly seven in the morning.
Giving intransitive fika an object marker for a city
❌ Tumeifika Dodoma sasa hivi.
Incorrect — base fika is intransitive and cannot take the class 9 object marker -i-.
✅ Tumefika Dodoma sasa hivi na tunatafuta teksi.
We have arrived in Dodoma just now and are looking for a taxi.
Keeping final -a in present negative
❌ Basi hafika hapa siku za Jumapili.
Incorrect class agreement and negative ending for class 5 basi.
✅ Basi halifiki hapa siku za Jumapili na sikukuu.
The bus does not arrive here on Sundays and public holidays.
Using fika when an agent delivers someone
❌ Dereva alifika wageni hotelini.
Incorrect valency — fika is intransitive; use fikisha for causing arrival.
✅ Dereva aliwafikisha wageni hotelini baada ya mkutano.
The driver took the guests to the hotel after the meeting.
Key Takeaways
- Fika is regular: ninafika, sifiki, nifike, fikeni.
- The arriving mover is subject; endpoints use bare place names, -ni, kwenye, or person-oriented kwa.
- Direct clock time marks arrival, while kufikia commonly sets a deadline.
- Perfect nimefika announces a current arrival result.
- Causative fikisha adds an agent and makes the delivered mover an object.
