A telephone number, account code, room number, and year may contain the same digits, but they are not read for the same purpose. An identifier preserves a sequence, so digit-by-digit reading is safest. A year normally names a cardinal number as a whole. Standard Swahili therefore separates identifying digits from counting quantities, and noun-class concord applies only in the latter use.
The digit names are sifuri, moja, mbili, tatu, nne, tano, sita, saba, nane, tisa. When they identify positions in a code, use these bare forms: digit 2 is mbili, never agreeing wawili or viwili.
Telephone numbers: preserve every digit
Read a telephone number digit by digit when accuracy matters. Pauses can divide the sequence into the printed groups without changing any digit into a larger cardinal number.
Nambari yangu ni sifuri saba moja mbili, tatu nne tano, sita saba nane.
My number is 0712 345 678.
The commas represent brief pauses. The group tatu nne tano preserves “345” as three digits; it is not read mia tatu arobaini na tano unless the speaker deliberately chooses a whole-number reading.
—Naomba urudie tarakimu nne za mwisho. —Ni sita, saba, nane, mbili.
—Please repeat the last four digits. —They are six, seven, eight, two.
Nambari ya dharura niliyopewa inaanza na sifuri mbili mfululizo.
The emergency number I was given begins with two zeros in a row.
The phrase sifuri mbili counts two zero digits, so mbili is the class-10 form modifying understood tarakimu. To spell out the sequence itself, repeat the digit: sifuri, sifuri.
Sifuri and the letter O
Sifuri is the standard digit name for 0. The letter O is o. Because some callers use an English-influenced “oh” in (informal) speech, explicitly distinguish digit and letter in codes where either is possible.
Nimesema sifuri tano, si herufi O na tano.
I said zero five, not the letter O and five.
Msimbo una herufi O katikati, lakini unamalizika kwa tarakimu sifuri.
The code has the letter O in the middle, but it ends with the digit zero.
Formal customer service, dictation, and security checks should prefer sifuri for the digit. This reduces ambiguity and preserves an initial zero that a whole-number reading might discard.
Digit-by-digit versus grouped whole-number readings
Some identifiers allow more than one natural strategy. A room labeled 204 can be read as a whole cardinal or as three identifying digits:
Mkutano umehamishwa hadi chumba namba mia mbili na nne kwenye ghorofa ya pili.
The meeting has been moved to room 204 on the second floor.
Ni chumba namba mbili sifuri nne, si chumba namba mia mbili arobaini.
It is room two-zero-four, not room 240.
The whole-number reading is compact; the digit reading is safer while correcting or dictating. A code beginning 02 cannot normally be treated as the cardinal two because its initial zero is part of the identifier.
For longer sequences, group with pauses and announce the grouping when necessary:
Soma nambari kwa mafungu matatu: sifuri nane, moja nne tano, halafu tisa mbili.
Read the number in three groups: zero eight, one four five, then nine two.
Here mafungu matatu is a genuine counted noun phrase: class-6 mafungu takes agreeing matatu. The digits inside each group remain bare. This contrast shows exactly where noun-class concord applies.
Repetition as a clarity strategy
In noisy conditions, repeat a whole group rather than rushing the entire sequence. Useful repair expressions include rudia “repeat,” tarakimu ya mwisho “the last digit,” mara mbili “twice,” and contrastive si… ni… “not… but…”.
—Umesema tano tisa au tano sita? —Tano sita; narudia, tano sita.
—Did you say five-nine or five-six? —Five-six; I repeat, five-six.
Tarakimu ya tatu ni nne, na tarakimu mbili za mwisho ni sifuri sifuri.
The third digit is four, and the last two digits are zero zero.
Ordinal ya tatu identifies a position. Cardinal phrase tarakimu mbili counts positions. The final repeated sifuri sifuri supplies their values.
Andika kila tarakimu ninapoisoma ili tusiruke tarakimu yoyote.
Write each digit as I read it so that we do not skip any digit.
This is a natural environment for kila: one digit at a time. The detailed distinction between exact sequence and distributed grouping is developed under distributive and approximate numbers.
Years are normally whole cardinal numbers
A year in ordinary prose is not normally spelled out as four isolated digits. It follows mwaka or mwaka wa and receives a full cardinal reading.
Mkataba huo ulisainiwa mwaka elfu moja mia tisa tisini na sita.
That contract was signed in 1996.
Mradi mpya utaanza mwaka elfu mbili ishirini na sita.
The new project will begin in 2026.
The year 1996 is built from elfu moja “one thousand,” mia tisa “nine hundred,” and tisini na sita “ninety-six.” The year 2026 is elfu mbili ishirini na sita. English commonly groups a year as “nineteen ninety-six”; copying that grouping word for word is not the neutral Standard Swahili reading.
In a form, database, or security check, the printed year may be dictated digit by digit to avoid transcription errors:
Kwa uhakiki wa fomu, soma mwaka tarakimu kwa tarakimu: mbili, sifuri, mbili, sita.
For checking the form, read the year digit by digit: two, zero, two, six.
This special instruction changes the communicative task from naming a year to identifying four boxes.
Account, document, and registration codes
Codes can mix letters and digits. State the category when sound alone may be ambiguous: herufi A “the letter A,” tarakimu nane “the digit eight.”
Nambari ya faili ni herufi B, kisha sifuri nne saba.
The file number is the letter B, followed by zero four seven.
Kwenye fomu hii, andika nambari ya usajili bila kuacha sifuri ya mwanzo.
On this form, write the registration number without omitting the initial zero.
Risiti mbili zina nambari tofauti, lakini tarakimu sita za kwanza zinafanana.
The two receipts have different numbers, but their first six digits are the same.
The last sentence contains actual quantities. Class-10 risiti takes mbili; class-10 tarakimu takes invariable sita. Within the identifier itself, each digit would be read bare.
Telephone arrangements and East African clock time
Phone exchanges often end by confirming when to call. Do not let the familiar Arabic digit on a screen override the East African hour name.
—Nikupigie saa ngapi? —Nipigie saa mbili asubuhi kwa nambari niliyokutumia.
—What time should I call you? —Call me at eight in the morning on the number I sent you.
Saa mbili asubuhi is 8 a.m., not 2 a.m. The word mbili is a class-10 numeral modifying saa in a clock expression, whereas digit 2 inside the telephone number is simply bare mbili. The form happens to look the same, but the grammar differs.
Register and writing
Digit-by-digit sifuri… is neutral and preferred for high-stakes accuracy. Grouped whole-number readings are efficient when a code's convention is shared. (Formal) service language should repeat or contrast unclear groups rather than rely on speed. Avoid spelling an identifier as one enormous number if leading zeros or fixed group lengths matter.
The basic bare digit forms are reviewed under cardinal numbers zero to ten.
Common Mistakes
Making an identifying digit agree
❌ Nambari inaanza na wawili, tano, sifuri.
Incorrect — digit 2 is bare mbili; it is not agreeing with an understood human noun.
✅ Nambari inaanza na mbili, tano, sifuri.
The number begins with two, five, zero.
Dropping an initial zero
❌ Nambari ya simu ni saba moja mbili, tatu nne tano, sita saba nane.
Incorrect transcription — the stated telephone number has lost its initial zero.
✅ Nambari ya simu ni sifuri saba moja mbili, tatu nne tano, sita saba nane.
The telephone number is 0712 345 678.
Confusing zero with the letter O
❌ Msimbo una sifuri katikati, ingawa fomu inaonyesha herufi O.
Incorrect identification — the printed symbol is the letter O, not digit zero.
✅ Msimbo una herufi O katikati na tarakimu sifuri mwishoni.
The code has the letter O in the middle and the digit zero at the end.
Reading a year as an ordinary digit string
❌ Alizaliwa mwaka moja tisa tisa sita.
Nonstandard neutral year reading — name 1996 as a whole cardinal number.
✅ Alizaliwa mwaka elfu moja mia tisa tisini na sita.
He or she was born in 1996.
Reading saa mbili as two o'clock
❌ Nipigie saa mbili asubuhi, yaani saa mbili baada ya usiku wa manane.
Incorrect conversion — East African saa mbili asubuhi is eight in the morning.
✅ Nipigie saa mbili asubuhi, mara tu ofisi inapofunguliwa.
Call me at eight in the morning, just when the office opens.
Key Takeaways
- Identifiers preserve sequence, so read their digits with bare sifuri, moja, mbili… and retain leading zeros.
- Pauses may group digits without turning every block into a whole cardinal number.
- Say sifuri for digit 0 and herufi O for the letter when ambiguity matters.
- Ordinary years receive full cardinal readings; digit-by-digit years belong to dictation or form checking.
- Noun-class concord applies when counting groups or digits as objects, not when naming each digit's identity.
