Cardinal Numbers Zero to Ten

The numbers zero to ten appear in prices, dates, scores, phone numbers, and schedules from the first day of learning Swahili. Their standalone forms are easy to memorize. The important grammar begins when a number modifies a noun: the noun normally comes first, one through five take noun-class concord, six, seven, nine, and ten remain invariable, and eight also agrees.

English says “three books.” Swahili says vitabu vitatu, literally “books three,” with class-8 vi- on both words. Counting aloud uses bare moja, mbili, tatu…; counting classed nouns requires the correct agreeing form.

The standalone forms

Sifuri, moja, mbili, tatu, nne, tano, sita, saba, nane, tisa, kumi.

Zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

Standard Swahili has five clear vowels and normally stresses the penultimate syllable. Do not reduce final vowels: tatu ends in a full u, and kumi in a full i. In mbili, mb is a prenasalized consonant sequence, not two words. Nne keeps both written n's; ne is a spelling error. The general rhythm is explained under penultimate stress.

💡
Practice the bare list for calculation and digit reading, but never assume that its forms can all be placed unchanged after a noun.

Noun first, numeral second

The neutral order is noun + cardinal numeral:

Nimenunua tiketi mbili za maonyesho ya jioni.

I have bought two tickets for the evening performance.

Tunahitaji viti sita zaidi kwenye chumba cha mkutano.

We need six more chairs in the meeting room.

Amina amebeba daftari moja na kalamu tatu kwenye mkoba wake.

Amina is carrying one notebook and three pens in her bag.

Tiketi mbili uses the class-10 form of “two,” while viti sita keeps invariable sita. In daftari moja, class 5 has no visible prefix on moja; in kalamu tatu, class 10 has the bare-looking form tatu. Agreement is real even when its surface exponent is zero.

Cardinals can stand alone when the noun is understood:

—Unahitaji nakala ngapi? —Tatu zinatosha kwa sasa.

—How many copies do you need? —Three are enough for now.

Bare tatu answers the counting question, while class-10 subject zi- in zinatosha resumes understood nakala.

Concord on one through five

The citation stems -moja, -wili, -tatu, -nne, -tano receive concord from the noun. Analytic hyphens show that a concord form is required; finished numerals are solid words.

Noun-class pairOneTwoThreeFourFive
1/2: mtu/watumtu mmojawatu wawiliwatu watatuwatu wannewatu watano
3/4: mti/mitimti mmojamiti miwilimiti mitatumiti minnemiti mitano
5/6: gari/magarigari mojamagari mawilimagari matatumagari mannemagari matano
7/8: kiti/vitikiti kimojaviti viwiliviti vitatuviti vinneviti vitano
9/10: nyumbanyumba mojanyumba mbilinyumba tatunyumba nnenyumba tano

Quantities greater than one select the plural member of a singular–plural pair: mtu mmoja but watu wawili. Class 9/10 nouns such as nyumba keep the same noun form, so the numeral and the wider agreement chain reveal number.

Watoto hawa wanne wamepata nafasi kwenye basi la shule.

These four children have obtained places on the school bus.

Magari matatu yamesubiri nje ya karakana tangu asubuhi.

Three cars have been waiting outside the garage since morning.

Vikombe hivi vitano vinatosha kwa wageni wetu.

These five cups are enough for our guests.

The numeral is one link in a larger concord chain: watoto hawa wanne wame-, magari matatu yame-, and vikombe hivi vitano vina-. The complete one-to-five paradigms appear under agreement with numerals one through five.

💡
First choose the correct singular or plural noun. Then let that noun's class select the numeral form; do not attach the noun's visible first syllable mechanically.

Six, seven, nine, ten—and the exception eight

Sita, saba, tisa, and kumi remain unchanged after nouns of different classes:

Watu sita walikaa ndani, lakini magari sita yalibaki nje.

Six people stayed inside, but six cars remained outside.

Tumeagiza vitabu saba, meza tisa na taa kumi kwa maktaba mpya.

We have ordered seven books, nine tables, and ten lamps for the new library.

Do not add wa-, vi-, ma-, or zi- to these four numerals. Eight is the important exception: inherited -nane still agrees.

NounEight
watu (class 2)watu wanane
miti (class 4)miti minane
magari (class 6)magari manane
viti (class 8)viti vinane
nyumba (class 10)nyumba nane

Wachezaji wanane walifika, lakini mipira minane tu ndiyo ililetwa.

Eight players arrived, but only eight balls were brought.

Human plural wachezaji takes wanane. Class-4 mipira takes minane. “After five nothing agrees” is therefore a tempting but false shortcut.

Zero in scores and quantities

Sifuri is common for the digit 0, mathematical results, measurements, and scores.

Timu yetu ilishinda mabao mawili kwa sifuri katika mchezo wa mwisho.

Our team won two goals to nil in the final match.

Kipimajoto kinaonyesha nyuzi sifuri asubuhi hii.

The thermometer is showing zero degrees this morning.

In ordinary conversation, “zero count nouns” is often expressed more naturally with existential negation: Hakuna tiketi iliyobaki “There are no tickets left.” Technical or (academic) statements can use idadi ni sifuri “the number is zero.”

Calculations, dates, prices, and schedules

Basic arithmetic commonly uses jumlisha “plus/add” and ukitoa “if you subtract.”

Mbili jumlisha tatu ni tano; kumi ukitoa nne, unabaki na sita.

Two plus three is five; if you subtract four from ten, you are left with six.

For a date, the cardinal follows tarehe:

Tarehe saba nina miadi klinikini saa tatu asubuhi.

On the seventh I have a clinic appointment at nine in the morning.

For a simple price exchange:

—Daftari moja ni dola ngapi? —Ni dola tatu, na mawili ni dola sita.

—How many dollars is one notebook? —It is three dollars, and two are six dollars.

The final mawili stands for class-6 plural madaftari. Its form still agrees even though the noun is omitted.

East African Swahili clock hours are counted from roughly six o'clock, not from midnight or noon. Thus saa moja asubuhi is 7 a.m., saa mbili asubuhi is 8 a.m., and saa tatu asubuhi is 9 a.m.

—Tunakutana saa ngapi? —Saa mbili asubuhi, mara tu ofisi inapofunguliwa.

—What time are we meeting? —At eight in the morning, just when the office opens.

Phone digits, unlike agreeing noun modifiers, use the bare counting forms:

Nambari ya huduma inaanza na sifuri, saba, tatu, kisha tano.

The service number begins with zero, seven, three, then five.

Common Mistakes

Putting the numeral before the noun

❌ Mbili tiketi zimebaki kwa safari ya jioni.

Incorrect neutral noun-phrase order — the noun normally precedes the cardinal.

✅ Tiketi mbili zimebaki kwa safari ya jioni.

Two tickets remain for the evening trip.

Omitting concord on a low numeral

❌ Watoto mbili wanasubiri chakula nje ya jikoni.

Incorrect — class-2 watoto requires wawili.

✅ Watoto wawili wanasubiri chakula nje ya jikoni.

Two children are waiting for food outside the kitchen.

Making an invariable numeral agree

❌ Vitabu visita vimewekwa kwenye rafu ya juu.

Incorrect — sita does not take class-8 vi-.

✅ Vitabu sita vimewekwa kwenye rafu ya juu.

Six books have been placed on the upper shelf.

Forgetting that eight agrees

❌ Wageni nane wameketi kwenye meza ya duara.

Incorrect in careful Standard agreement — plural-human wageni takes wanane.

✅ Wageni wanane wameketi kwenye meza ya duara.

Eight guests are seated at the round table.

Reading the East African clock from midnight

❌ Tutakutana saa mbili mchana; hiyo ni saa mbili baada ya adhuhuri.

Incorrect clock conversion — East African saa mbili is eight o'clock, not two.

✅ Tutakutana saa nane mchana, yaani saa mbili baada ya adhuhuri.

We will meet at two in the afternoon.

Key Takeaways

  • Count sifuri, moja, mbili, tatu, nne, tano, sita, saba, nane, tisa, kumi with clear final vowels.
  • Cardinals normally follow the noun.
  • One through five agree with noun class; six, seven, nine, and ten are invariable; eight agrees as -nane.
  • Standalone calculations and phone digits use bare forms, while understood classed nouns can still trigger concord.
  • East African clock hours start from about six o'clock: saa mbili asubuhi is 8 a.m., not 2 a.m.
