High-Frequency Collocations with kufanya, kupata and kutoa

The high-frequency verbs kufanya, kupata and kutoa resemble English do/make, get and give, but their useful meanings live in recurring combinations. In kufanya utafiti, kupata nafuu and kutoa maoni, the noun selects a conventional event that cannot be predicted by translating the verb alone. All unlabelled combinations below are neutral in current Standard Swahili.

What makes a light-verb collocation

A light verb contributes a broad event shape, while its noun supplies most of the specific content. Kufanya frames carrying out an activity, kupata frames something entering a person's experience or reach, and kutoa frames something moving outward from a source. These meanings motivate many combinations, but they do not generate every phrase freely: collocations must still be learned as units.

Kamati itafanya uamuzi baada ya kusoma mapendekezo yote.

The committee will make a decision after reading all the proposals.

Baada ya matibabu ya wiki moja, mtoto ameanza kupata nafuu.

After a week of treatment, the child has begun to recover.

Wakazi walitoa maoni yao kabla ya mpango huo kupitishwa.

Residents expressed their views before that plan was approved.

English selects three unrelated verbs—make, recover, express. Swahili uses a broad verb plus a content noun. This is why memorizing fanya = do, pata = get and toa = give is only the beginning.

Learn each combination as a predicate with its likely participants: kufanya utafiti kuhusu jambo, kupata taarifa kutoka kwa mtu, kutoa ruhusa kwa mtu. The surrounding complements are part of fluent use.

kufanya: carrying out an activity

Common fanya + noun combinations package an activity that English may express with a verb or with do/make/conduct.

CollocationTypical continuation/responseCommon substitutionRegister
kufanya kaziwapi/kwa muda gani?kazi ya ziadaneutral
kufanya mazoeziya nini/mara ngapi?mazoezi ya mwili, ya lughaneutral
kufanya uamuzikuhusu nini?kuamuaneutral; common in (formal) deliberation
kufanya utafitikuhusu nini?uchunguzi(academic)
kufanya juhudiili...kujitahidineutral

Tunafanya mazoezi ya mazungumzo kila Jumatano baada ya kazi.

We practice conversation every Wednesday after work.

Watafiti walifanya utafiti kuhusu matumizi ya maji katika kata tano.

The researchers conducted research on water use in five wards.

The finite verb still carries the subject and TAM markers: wa-li-fany-a in walifanya. If the noun is definite and already active, an object marker may refer back to it: Utafiti huo waliufanya mwaka jana “They conducted that study last year.” The class 11 marker -u- agrees with utafiti.

kupata: entering possession or experience

With kupata, the subject obtains, encounters or comes into an experience. English often avoids get entirely.

Hatukupata nafasi ya kuzungumza na meneja kabla hajaondoka.

We did not get an opportunity to speak with the manager before she left.

Nimepata taarifa kwamba ndege yetu itachelewa kwa saa mbili.

I have received information that our flight will be delayed by two hours.

Biashara ndogo zilipata hasara baada ya daraja kufungwa.

Small businesses suffered losses after the bridge was closed.

Useful combinations include kupata kazi “get a job,” kupata nafasi “get an opportunity,” kupata taarifa/habari “receive information/news,” kupata shida “encounter difficulty,” kupata faida “make a profit/benefit,” kupata hasara “suffer a loss” and kupata nafuu “recover/get relief.” The shared image helps memory, but the English outcome varies.

The perfect often matters: nimepata taarifa presents the information as now available; nilipata taarifa simply locates its receipt in the past. The full paradigm appears under kupata.

kutoa: outward transfer, issue and expression

Kutoa presents something as emerging from a person, institution or source. This supports kutoa taarifa “issue a statement,” kutoa maoni “express views,” kutoa msaada “provide help,” kutoa ruhusa “grant permission,” kutoa mfano “give an example” and kutoa huduma “provide services.”

Mkurugenzi atatoa taarifa rasmi baada ya kikao cha bodi.

The director will issue an official statement after the board meeting.

Jirani zetu walitupa msaada mkubwa tulipohamia hapa.

Our neighbors gave us substantial help when we moved here.

The second example uses the monosyllabic verb kupa because the recipient “us” is central: wa-li-tu-pa. Compare walitoa msaada “they provided help,” which profiles the help moving outward, with walitupa msaada “they gave us help,” which overtly indexes the recipient. Kutoa is therefore not a universal replacement for English give.

In kutoa uamuzi, an authorized body issues or delivers a decision, often (formal). Kufanya uamuzi emphasizes reaching/making it. The same noun can therefore occur with different light verbs when the construal changes.

💡
Ask what the sentence profiles. Kamati ilifanya uamuzi highlights decision-making; jaji alitoa uamuzi highlights an authoritative ruling being delivered.

A realistic workplace exchange

— Mmefanya uamuzi kuhusu maombi yangu? — Bado; tunasubiri kupata taarifa kutoka kwa idara ya fedha.

— Have you made a decision about my application? — Not yet; we're waiting to receive information from the finance department.

— Nitapata jibu lini? — Kamati itakapomaliza kikao, tutakupa jibu na kutoa maelezo mafupi.

— When will I get an answer? — When the committee finishes its meeting, we'll give you an answer and provide a brief explanation.

The exchange shows three different participant structures. Kupata jibu presents the applicant as recipient. Kukupa jibu marks that recipient with -ku- inside kupa. Kutoa maelezo profiles the explanation released by the committee. Substituting one English-like verb throughout would erase these choices.

Common Mistakes

Treating kufanya as the only verb for “make”

⚠️ Seremala alifanya meza mpya kwa mbao ngumu.

Possible — fanya can mean make or manufacture — but less specific than the usual fabrication verb kutengeneza in this context.

✅ Seremala alitengeneza meza mpya kwa mbao ngumu.

The carpenter made a new table from hardwood.

Translating “make a profit” with kufanya

❌ Duka lilifanya faida kubwa mwezi uliopita.

Nonpreferred word-for-word transfer in careful Standard Swahili.

✅ Duka lilipata faida kubwa mwezi uliopita.

The shop made a large profit last month.

Using kutoa for every kind of giving

❌ Nilitoa mtoto daftari jipya.

Incorrect recipient construction for ordinary transfer to the child.

✅ Nilimpa mtoto daftari jipya kabla ya somo.

I gave the child a new notebook before the lesson.

Choosing the wrong decision collocation

⚠️ Jaji alifanya uamuzi wake mahakamani asubuhi.

Possible for reaching a decision, but it misses the intended formal sense of delivering the ruling.

✅ Jaji alitoa uamuzi wake mahakamani asubuhi.

The judge delivered the ruling in court this morning.

Key Takeaways

  • Kufanya carries out activities, kupata brings something into experience and kutoa moves something outward.
  • Learn the whole collocation and its complements, not a one-word English gloss.
  • TAM and object markers remain on the finite light verb.
  • Use kupa when an overt recipient is central; use kutoa when provision, issue or outward release is central.
