Mixed-Class Agreement Resolution

Most Swahili agreement begins with one lexical head and ends with its class series. Mixed-class constructions are harder because coordination may combine two heads, apposition may place two descriptions side by side, and a collective may denote either one unit or several people. “Resolution” is the decision that turns those competing possibilities into one controller for a particular target. The basic coordination patterns are introduced in Agreement with Coordinated Subjects.

There is no honest universal formula such as “all mixed inanimates become class 8.” Standard Swahili uses several strategies, and speaker judgments differ. The advanced skill is to recognize the robust hierarchies, keep one analysis internally consistent, and repair a doubtful construction with an overt cover noun.

A practical hierarchy, not a mechanical equation

Work through these questions in order:

  1. Does the combined referent consist of people? Resolve to plural human class 2.
  2. Do singular nonhuman conjuncts share a class with a regular plural partner? That partner is an available resolution.
  3. Is there an overt cover or resumptive noun? Its class controls its own chain.
  4. Does one noun merely rename another in apposition? Identify the syntactic head rather than adding their classes.
  5. Is a collective viewed as one unit or as its human members? Choose the corresponding controller.
  6. Only then consider a default class 8/10 or closest-conjunct strategy for genuinely mixed inanimates.

This ordering gives stable semantic and structural controllers priority over variable defaults.

💡
Resolution chooses a controller; it does not create a bag of interchangeable prefixes. After the choice, demonstrative, adjective, relative, possessive, and verb targets must all follow the selected series.

Human reference outranks morphological mismatch

Coordinated human singulars normally resolve to class 2, regardless of the lexical shape of each noun.

Mariam na Bakari wamewasili mapema kwa kikao cha leo.

Mariam and Bakari arrived early for today's meeting.

Daktari na kijana, watu hawa wawili walioitwa ofisini, wamesubiri nje.

The doctor and the young person, these two people who were called to the office, have waited outside.

The cover noun watu makes the full class 2 chain visible: hawa—wawili—walio—wa-. A person coordinated with a salient animal also commonly receives animate plural resolution:

Msichana na paka wake hawajaonekana tangu alfajiri.

The girl and her cat have not been seen since dawn.

This is semantic resolution for the combined animate group, not agreement with nearby class 9 paka. A technical text that treats an animal as a specimen may construe it differently, so advanced analysis must attend to discourse meaning as well as animacy.

Same-class singulars can select the paired plural

Two singular nonhuman nouns of the same class often resolve to that gender's ordinary plural class: 3 + 3 → 4, 5 + 5 → 6, 7 + 7 → 8, and 9 + 9 → 10.

Mti na mwavuli imeanguka wakati wa dhoruba.

The tree and the umbrella fell during the storm. (class 4 resolution)

Gari na basi yamesimama langoni kwa wakati mmoja.

The car and the bus stopped at the gate at the same time. (class 6 resolution)

Kiti na kitanda vimehamishwa hadi chumba cha wageni.

The chair and the bed were moved to the guest room. (class 8 resolution)

Meza na redio zimebaki kwenye ofisi ya zamani.

The table and the radio remained in the old office. (class 10 resolution)

The mapping is clearest when the two conjuncts naturally form a set. It is not produced by simply copying the final noun's singular concord.

Mixed inanimates have competing strategies

When the conjuncts belong to different nonhuman classes, three strategies occur. First, class 8 vi- is a frequent inanimate default:

Meza na kiti vimeharibika baada ya kuachwa nje.

The table and chair were damaged after being left outside. (class 8 default)

Second, some speakers use class 10 zi- as the default. This is (regional: speaker-dependent) in relative frequency:

Kikapu na redio zimepotea wakati wa safari.

The basket and radio went missing during the journey. (class 10 default)

Third, the verb can agree with the conjunct closest to it. With a preverbal coordination, that is normally the last conjunct:

Redio na kikapu kimeanguka sakafuni usiku.

The radio and basket fell onto the floor at night. (agreement with nearby class 7 kikapu)

Closest-conjunct agreement is documented grammar, not automatically a slip. Yet it can momentarily suggest that only the last noun participated. For planned (formal) prose, an explicit cover noun is usually clearer.

💡
Do not invent a stronger rule than the language has. Default class 8, default class 10, and proximity coexist with speaker variation; a cover noun is the most portable solution.

Cover nouns create transparent full chains

Choose a plural noun that accurately names the combined set: watu “people” (class 2), magari “vehicles/cars” (class 6), vitu “things” (class 8), or bidhaa “goods/items” (class 10). The appositive list then identifies the members, while the cover noun supplies the concord.

Magari haya mawili, gari na basi, yaliyowasili pamoja yameziba lango.

These two vehicles, a car and a bus, which arrived together, have blocked the gate.

Vitu hivi vipya, meza na kiti, vilivyonunuliwa jana vimewekwa ghorofani.

These new things, the table and chair, bought yesterday, have been put upstairs.

Bidhaa hizi mbili, kikapu na redio, zilizoletwa leo zimehifadhiwa ofisini.

These two goods, the basket and radio, delivered today, have been stored in the office.

The parallel chains are class 6 haya—mawili—yaliyo—ya-, class 8 hivi—vipya—vilivyo—vi-, and class 10 hizi—mbili—zilizo—zi-. The listed nouns do not jointly control each modifier; the overt plural head does.

Apposition does not automatically trigger plural resolution

Apposition presents two expressions for one referent: Asha, daktari wetu, identifies one person, not two coordinated people. Both descriptions converge on human singular agreement.

Asha, daktari wetu mpya ambaye alianza jana, ameonana na wagonjwa.

Asha, our new doctor who started yesterday, has seen the patients.

Nonhuman apposition requires a decision about which phrase is the head. In Mwangaza, gazeti hili jipya, the bare name is explained by class 5 gazeti, so the following chain is class 5.

Mwangaza, gazeti hili jipya ambalo limeanzishwa mjini, limesambazwa leo.

Mwangaza, this new newspaper founded in town, was distributed today.

If two appositives propose different conceptual heads—say class 9 kampuni and class 5 shirika—a mid-chain switch can be grammatical only as an explicit change of perspective. Repeating the chosen noun prevents readers from interpreting the switch as an error.

Kampuni ya Mwangaza imetangaza matokeo; shirika hilo pia limeeleza mpango wake wa kijamii.

The Mwangaza company announced its results; that organization also explained its social program.

The semicolon and overt shirika hilo establish a new class 5 controller. Without it, imetangaza ... limeeleza would look like uncontrolled drift.

Collective reference is a construal choice

A collective can denote an institutional unit or its members. Class 9 kamati as a unit takes i-; the plural people wajumbe take class 2 wa-. See Agreement with Collective and Mass Nouns for the wider contrast.

Kamati nzima imekubali ratiba mpya ya mkutano.

The entire committee has accepted the new meeting schedule.

Wajumbe wote wa kamati wamewasili kwa nyakati tofauti.

All the committee members have arrived at different times.

Spoken kamati wamewasili can reflect an understood human plural, but edited prose benefits from naming wajumbe. The repair preserves the intended member reading rather than forcing institutional singular agreement.

Repair strategies when judgments divide

Four repairs are consistently useful. Add a cover noun; split the conjuncts into separate clauses; remove the coordination from subject position; or repeat the intended head after a topic shift.

Meza imeharibika, na kiti nacho kimelegea.

The table was damaged, and the chair became loose too.

Gharama hizo zimetokana na kurekebisha meza na kiti.

Those costs resulted from repairing the table and chair.

Both preserve the factual content without requiring one resolved marker for the mixed pair. Fluent speakers use such restructuring naturally; it is not an admission that the grammar has failed.

Common Mistakes

Agreeing with only the first human conjunct

❌ Neema na Musa aliondoka mapema.

Incorrect — the two-person controller requires plural human agreement.

✅ Neema na Musa waliondoka mapema.

Neema and Musa left early.

Propagating the wrong class from an overt cover noun

❌ Magari hivi viwili, gari na basi, vilivyowasili pamoja vimeziba lango kuu.

Incorrect — the class 6 cover noun magari cannot take a class 8 concord chain.

✅ Magari haya mawili, gari na basi, yaliyowasili pamoja yameziba lango kuu.

These two vehicles, a car and a bus, which arrived together, have blocked the main gate.

The correction changes every dependent from class 8 to class 6: hivi → haya, viwili → mawili, vilivyo- → yaliyo-, and vi- → ya- in the finite verb.

Treating an appositive as a second coordinated subject

❌ Asha, daktari wetu, wameanza kazi leo.

Incorrect — Asha and daktari wetu denote one person, not two people.

✅ Asha, daktari wetu, ameanza kazi leo.

Asha, our doctor, started work today.

Switching defaults across one unchanged mixed group

❌ Meza na kiti vimevunjika, halafu zimeondolewa.

Inconsistent — the controller shifts from default class 8 to class 10 without being restated.

✅ Vitu viwili, meza na kiti, vimeharibika, kisha vimepelekwa stoo.

Two things, the table and chair, were damaged and then taken to the storeroom.

Forcing unit agreement when the meaning is individual

❌ Kamati imewasili kwa magari tofauti.

Poor for the intended member reading — the institutional unit did not literally arrive in separate cars.

✅ Wajumbe wa kamati wamewasili kwa magari tofauti.

The committee members arrived in different cars.

Key Takeaways

Human plural resolution and overt heads are the strongest guides. Same-class singular conjuncts can select their paired plural; genuinely mixed inanimates allow default and proximity strategies with speaker variation. Apposition normally describes one referent, while collectives alternate between unit and member construals. Whenever a resolved chain would be unstable or opaque, supply an accurate cover noun and debug every target from that controller outward.
