Diagnosing a Broken Concord Chain

A broken Swahili concord chain can look like many facts went wrong at once: the demonstrative, adjective, possessive, relative marker, and verb all have different forms. Usually there is one underlying mistake—the writer chose the wrong controller—and several visible consequences. The fastest repair is therefore to start with the head noun and move outward, not to memorize a corrected sentence as one block.

English speakers are especially likely to copy a nearby syllable or agree with the nearest noun. Standard Swahili instead asks each target to identify the same grammatical controller. All unlabelled examples below are neutral in (informal) conversation and (formal) writing.

Step 1: Find the head noun

The head is the noun that the whole phrase is about. In kitabu cha historia, the head is kitabu “book”; historia only completes the associative phrase “of history.” In gari la wageni, the car is still the head even though wageni “guests” is closer to the verb.

Kitabu cha historia kimefika leo.

The history book arrived today.

Gari la wageni limeegeshwa nje.

The guests' car is parked outside.

Ask “What arrived?” and “What is parked?” The answers—kitabu and gari—supply class 7 ki- and class 5 li-.

💡
Cross out complements temporarily. If cha historia or la wageni disappears, the remaining noun usually reveals the controller immediately.

Step 2: Identify class, number, and human reference

Do not guess a noun's class from its first letter alone. Mtoto and mti both begin m-, but mtoto is class 1 and mti class 3. Gari is class 5 despite lacking visible ji-. The form barua can be class 9 singular or class 10 plural; its dependents show the number.

Mtoto huyu mdogo amefika.

This small child has arrived.

Mti huu mdogo umeanguka.

This small tree has fallen.

Barua hizi mpya zimefika.

These new letters have arrived.

Human and animate reference may override lexical morphology. A person such as kijana or daktari uses the human class 1/2 series in neutral Standard Swahili. If classification itself is uncertain, use a dictionary or the agreement diagnostic for noun classes before repairing targets.

Step 3: Label each target by series

Different targets do not all copy one prefix. Write a small label above each form:

Target typeClass 5 with gariClass 7 with kitabuClass 10 with barua
Proximal demonstrativehilihikihizi
Adjective -pyajipyakipyampya
Possessive -angulanguchanguzangu
Associative -alachaza
-enyelenyechenyezenye
amba- relativeambaloambachoambazo
Subject markerli-ki-zi-

The forms differ because demonstrative, adjective, possessive, and relative concord are separate series. A correct hili does not prove that hiliangu or hilimefika could exist.

Step 4: Check the noun phrase from the controller outward

Now visit each dependent. Use the controller's row for the demonstrative, then the adjective series, then possessive or associative forms. Do not let a correct neighbor choose the next form.

Gari langu hili jipya lenye nafasi limefika.

This new roomy car of mine has arrived.

Kitabu changu hiki kipya chenye picha kimefika.

This new illustrated book of mine has arrived.

Barua zangu hizi mpya zenye mihuri zimefika.

These new stamped letters of mine have arrived.

These parallel chains use class 5 langu—hili—jipya—lenye—li-, class 7 changu—hiki—kipya—chenye—ki-, and class 10 zangu—hizi—mpya—zenye—zi-.

💡
A long chain contains built-in evidence. If one target disagrees with six others, repair that target. If six targets agree with one another but not with the head, revisit the class decision.

Step 5: Check the finite verb's first slot

In an ordinary affirmative finite verb, subject concord comes before tense or aspect. Analytic ki-me-fik-a helps identify class 7 ki- and perfect -me-, but ordinary spelling is kimefika. Do not separate a finished verb or copy the noun prefix into it.

Vitabu vimefika, lakini havijapangwa kwenye rafu.

The books have arrived, but they have not been arranged on the shelf.

The affirmative verb uses class 8 vi-; the negative verb uses class 8 negative havi-. Negation has its own subject series, so simply adding ha- to vimefika will not work.

Step 6: Look for silent or resolved controllers

Sometimes the lexical noun is omitted: Hivi vipya vimefika can mean “these new ones have arrived” when class 8 nouns are already active. Coordination can also create a resolved controller. Two people joined by na take plural human wa-; mixed nonhuman nouns may need a cover noun.

Neema na Musa wamewasili kabla ya wengine.

Neema and Musa arrived before the others.

Vitu viwili, dawati na kabati, vimeharibika.

Two things, the desk and cupboard, were damaged.

In the second sentence, class 8 vitu controls viwili and vi-; proximity to class 5 kabati does not change the chain.

A complete repair

Start with this sentence:

❌ Viatu yangu hii mpya ambayo imefika ni ya watoto.

Incorrect — every dependent has been selected from singular class 9 instead of plural class 8.

The controller is viatu, class 8 plural. Visit the targets in order: possessive vyangu, demonstrative hivi, adjective vipya, relative ambavyo, subject vi- in vimefika, and associative vya.

✅ Viatu vyangu hivi vipya ambavyo vimefika ni vya watoto.

These new shoes of mine that arrived are for the children.

The correction changes every dependent because the controller decision changed. That is faster and more reliable than repairing only the word that first sounds unusual.

Common Mistakes

Agreeing with the nearest noun

❌ Kitabu cha wanafunzi wamefika.

Incorrect — wanafunzi is inside the associative complement; kitabu is the singular head.

✅ Kitabu cha wanafunzi kimefika.

The students' book has arrived.

Copying the visible noun prefix onto the verb

❌ Matunda mazuri mameiva.

Incorrect — class 6 subject concord is ya-, not the noun prefix ma-.

✅ Matunda mazuri yameiva.

The good fruit has ripened.

Using one series for every target

❌ Kikapu kiangu ki kipya kimepasuka.

Incorrect — the class is right, but possessive and demonstrative have their own forms.

✅ Kikapu changu hiki kipya kimepasuka.

This new basket of mine has split.

Repairing only the verb

❌ Gari hii mpya ambalo limefika ni langu.

Incorrect — the verb and relative are class 5, but the demonstrative and adjective are not.

✅ Gari hili jipya ambalo limefika ni langu.

This new car that arrived is mine.

Key Takeaways

Find the head, establish its class and number, label every agreement target by series, and then check the noun phrase and verb separately. Treat human reference, ellipsis, and coordination as possible changes in controller—not as exceptions that allow random forms. One controller-first pass can repair an entire chain while showing exactly why every change is necessary.
