English very, really, completely, deeply, and highly all increase degree, but they do not combine with the same words. Serbian has the same kind of lexical selection: веома важан, дубоко забринут, строго забрањен, тешко повређен, and висококвалификован each sound conventional because the degree expression construes a particular kind of scale.
Grammar tells you that adverbial intensifiers do not agree. Collocation tells you which expression a native speaker is likely to choose, while orthography shows that some established high-degree combinations have lexicalized as compounds. This page therefore treats degree as a meeting point between meaning and lexical habit, not as a list of interchangeable translations.
For the productive grammar of comparison and ordinary degree formation, first review manner and degree adverbs; the focus here is the lexical preference that grammar alone cannot predict.
General scalar intensifiers
Веома and врло combine broadly with gradable adjectives and adverbs. Both are neutral in standard Serbian; веома is especially comfortable in careful prose. Јако is extremely common in everyday speech with the meaning “very,” while its older concrete meaning “strongly” remains visible in combinations such as јако притиснути. Баш is an expressive focus and degree marker (informal).
Овај извештај је веома јасан, али је последње поглавље прилично дуго.
This report is very clear, but the last chapter is fairly long.
Нови стан нам је баш близу посла, што нам много значи.
Our new apartment is really close to work, which means a lot to us. (informal)
Филм ми се јако допао, нарочито сцена на железничкој станици.
I really liked the film, especially the scene at the railway station. (everyday speech)
The choice also signals degree: прилично тежак is “fairly/rather difficult,” weaker than веома тежак. Изузетно raises the degree and often contributes an evaluative, careful tone: изузетно користан, изузетно сложен. Крајње commonly intensifies an extreme negative or critical assessment, such as крајње непримерен “utterly inappropriate.”
Поступак је изузетно сложен, а образложење одлуке крајње нејасно.
The procedure is exceptionally complex, and the explanation of the decision is extremely unclear. (formal/evaluative)
Completeness is not merely high degree
Потпуно and сасвим locate a property at or near an endpoint: потпуно празан, сасвим јасан, потпуно другачији. They fit adjectives that can be understood as complete states. A merely high position on an open scale normally favors веома/врло.
После ажурирања интерфејс изгледа потпуно другачије, али су основне функције сасвим исте.
After the update the interface looks completely different, but the basic functions are exactly the same.
Упутство је сасвим јасно кад се прочита цео пример.
The instructions are perfectly clear once the whole example is read.
With evaluative adjectives, сасвим добар often means “quite good/perfectly acceptable,” not “maximally good.” This is a conventional pragmatic reading rather than simple arithmetic on a scale.
Хотел није луксузан, али је сасвим добар за једно ноћење.
The hotel isn't luxurious, but it is perfectly adequate for one night.
Готово “almost” approaches an endpoint without reaching it; једва “barely” places the event or property just above a minimum.
Сала је била готово празна, а говорник се на крају једва чуо.
The hall was almost empty, and by the end the speaker was barely audible.
Lexically preferred intensifier families
Certain adverbs repeatedly occur with semantic families. These are productive patterns, but their boundaries must be learned from usage.
| Intensifier | Typical partners | Underlying image |
|---|---|---|
| дубоко | забринут, разочаран, уверен, дирнут | inner emotional or mental depth |
| тешко | повређен, оштећен, болестан | severity of harm or illness |
| строго | забрањен, поверљив, контролисан | force of a rule or restriction |
| високо- (compound) | висококвалификован, високообразован, високоразвијен | high rank or level |
| оштро | критиковати, осудити, реаговати | forceful public opposition |
| снажно | утицати, подржати, одјекнути | strength of effect or response |
| уско / тесно | повезан, сарађивати | closeness of relation |
Лекари су дубоко забринути јер је један радник тешко повређен у несрећи.
The doctors are deeply concerned because one worker was seriously injured in the accident.
Улаз у лабораторију је строго забрањен неовлашћеним лицима.
Unauthorized persons are strictly forbidden from entering the laboratory.
Компанија тражи висококвалификоване инжењере који ће тесно сарађивати са истраживачким тимом.
The company is looking for highly qualified engineers who will work closely with the research team.
Удружење је оштро критиковало предлог, али је снажно подржало наставак јавне расправе.
The association sharply criticized the proposal but strongly supported continuing the public debate.
These adverbs retain lexical meaning. Дубоко portrays a belief or emotion as rooted inside a person; строго invokes the authority enforcing a rule. That is why дубоко забрањен and строго дирнут are not merely unusual—they combine incompatible construals. The високо- family is orthographically different: established adjectives such as висококвалификован, високообразован, and високоразвијен are written as single words in standard Serbian.
Nouns choose characteristic “strong” adjectives
Degree can be carried by an adjective inside a noun phrase. English heavy splits into several Serbian collocations: обилна киша, густ саобраћај, тешка повреда, and велики губитак. Serbian јак combines naturally with physical intensity in јака кафа, јак ветар, јак бол, but it is not a universal equivalent of strong/heavy.
После обилне кише створила се густа магла, па је саобраћај на ауто-путу био веома успорен.
After heavy rain, dense fog formed, so traffic on the motorway was greatly slowed.
Попио сам јаку кафу, али ми ни она није помогла да останем будан.
I drank strong coffee, but even that didn't help me stay awake. (male speaker)
Једна мала грешка у формули изазвала је озбиљан проблем у завршном обрачуну.
One small error in the formula caused a serious problem in the final calculation.
Велика грешка emphasizes magnitude or importance; озбиљна грешка emphasizes consequences. Both are idiomatic, but they are not identical.
Comparatives require comparative degree markers
Before a comparative, Serbian normally uses много, далеко, знатно, неупоредиво rather than веома/врло. These markers measure the gap between two values.
Нова рута је знатно краћа и много безбеднија од старе.
The new route is considerably shorter and much safer than the old one.
Ова верзија програма ради далеко брже на старијим рачунарима.
This version of the program runs far faster on older computers.
Све + comparative describes progressive change: све брже, све теже, све мање. It does not mean “all faster.”
Како се рок приближава, све је теже пронаћи слободну салу.
As the deadline approaches, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find an available hall.
Negation and low degree
Нимало strengthens a negative judgment: нимало лак, нимало задовољан. In standard spelling it is one word. Не нарочито gives a milder negative assessment, while ни најмање emphatically denies even the smallest degree.
Задатак није нимало једноставан, али решење није ни најмање случајно.
The task is not at all simple, but the solution is by no means accidental.
Ресторан није нарочито скуп, али су порције прилично мале.
The restaurant isn't particularly expensive, but the portions are rather small.
A review meeting
— Да ли је нови поступак много бржи? — Знатно је бржи, али упутство још није сасвим јасно. — То је озбиљан проблем. — Слажем се. Колеге су дубоко забринуте, па ћемо документ темељно прерадити.
— Is the new procedure much faster? — It is considerably faster, but the instructions still aren't completely clear. — That's a serious problem. — I agree. Our colleagues are deeply concerned, so we'll revise the document thoroughly.
The dialogue distinguishes a comparative gap (знатно бржи), completeness (сасвим јасно), consequence (озбиљан проблем), emotional depth (дубоко забринуте), and manner (темељно прерадити).
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Match the semantic family
строго забрањено — дубоко разочаран — тешко повређен — висококвалификован
strictly prohibited — deeply disappointed — seriously injured — highly qualified. Answer: rule, emotion, severity of harm, and institutional level each select a characteristic degree expression.
Task 2: Intensify a comparative
Нови модел је много лакши, знатно тиши и неупоредиво поузданији од претходног.
The new model is much lighter, considerably quieter, and incomparably more reliable than the previous one. Answer: comparative degree takes много, знатно, or неупоредиво, not веома.
Common Mistakes
Using веома before a comparative
❌ Овај стан је веома светлији од оног који смо јуче видели.
Incorrect — comparative светлији requires a comparative degree marker, not веома.
✅ Овај стан је много светлији од оног који смо јуче видели.
This apartment is much brighter than the one we saw yesterday.
Treating every high degree as јако
❌ Приступ серверу је јако забрањен без посебне дозволе.
Non-idiomatic — rules are conventionally intensified with строго.
✅ Приступ серверу је строго забрањен без посебне дозволе.
Access to the server is strictly prohibited without special permission.
Translating English “heavy” with тежак everywhere
❌ Због тешке кише утакмица је прекинута после двадесет минута.
Non-idiomatic for rainfall — Serbian normally says обилна or јака киша.
✅ Због обилне кише утакмица је прекинута после двадесет минута.
Because of heavy rain, the match was stopped after twenty minutes.
Combining an intensifier with the wrong semantic image
❌ Комисија је строго разочарана квалитетом радова.
Non-idiomatic — disappointment is conventionally intensified with дубоко or веома, not строго.
✅ Комисија је дубоко разочарана квалитетом радова.
The commission is deeply disappointed with the quality of the work.
Key Takeaways
- Broad веома/врло differ from conversational јако/баш and evaluative изузетно/крајње.
- Потпуно/сасвим profile an endpoint; they are not simply stronger versions of “very.”
- Semantic families favor characteristic combinations: дубоко забринут, строго забрањен, тешко повређен.
- Nouns select their own degree adjectives: обилна киша, густа магла, јака кафа.
- Comparatives take много, далеко, знатно, неупоредиво, not веома.
